View Full Version : Trijicon HD Rears Driving Me Crazy

I'm a big fan of the HD front and have them on the vast majority of my Glocks; the few Glocks I have without them will be upgraded when their current lamps dim. However, I'm not a big fan of the Trijicon rear sights because they are fricken HUGE. Not only are they big, they are sharp as hell and cause fraying of my shirts when carried OWB at 3-4 o'clock every day. They also cut into my luv handles when I bend toward my strong side, but that's another problem for a different thread. Anyway, I've out fitted my Glocks with the AmeriGlo ProGlo fronts (made in conjunction with Trijicon and indistinguishable from the HD) since their front sight can be ordered separately and matched with any number of more reasonably profiled rear sight options. I wish to hell that Trijicon would follow AmeriGlo's lead and have an option to just purchase the HD fronts.
Now, I'm faced with a rather expensive problem. The problem is that AmeriGlo does not offer the ProGlo for popular brands such as Sig and Novak cut 1911s. Thus, I'm faced with several (think 7 or 8) 1911s and an equal number of Sigs with old tritium lamps that need to be replaced, and no way to upgrade to HD fronts without purchasing the Trijicon rears that look like the Statue of Liberty standing proud...ugh.
AmeriGlo or Trijicon, if you can hear me - make a stand alone Novak cut 1911 HD front. I will buy LOTS of them often. Alas, I wait...life sucks.

AmeriGlo does make the "Spartan Operator" for Sigs that is very similar to an HD. Look up SG-446 or the SG-212-220 for a front only. https://www.ameriglo.net/catalog/sights/pistol-sights/sigsauer
If you see the "sharp rear sight" thread, we discuss much of this.
You can buy just a HD front from Optics Planet. Looking at dimensions on the Heinie and Trijicon website, I believe the HD front will pair nicely with the Heinie Ledge .156 width rear. I have a Heinie rear sight inbound to test this. I believe the Heinie rear is nicely rounded.

And don't hold your breath for Ameri Glo to produce TCAPs for the Sig. I e-mailed them and they aren't even thinking about it. Maybe the rise of the P320 will change that.....

That's funny. When he tried to get back into shooting Sigs a year or so ago, I seem to remember Todd posting that they were in the works.

I remember Todd saying that which is why I contacted them to find out when.

I've run a Heinie Slant Pro Ledge Rear with a Trijicon HD front sight. The Heinie rear is the same height as the Trijicon. The Heinie is not as sharp as the Trijicon but the problems with it sticking out and chewing holes in shirts are the same.

Great to known Pablo. I went ahead and placed an order with Optics Plant for a HD front that was on sale. In my research of potential rear sights, I've been unable to find one other than the Heinie that would be both wide enough (notch) and tall enough to work with the HD front. I looked at Dawson, 10-8, Wilson, et al.
Also, a big thanks to GJM - I had no idea that Optics Plant sold just the HD fronts.

I should have read this thread awhile ago. I love the HD sights I have them on 2 guns but never carried concealed. I thought I'd just switch all mine to these until I put them on my carry for a bout 2 weeks and the rear kept scratching my side. I never realized how sharp the corners of the rear sight were. So off they came and went on the block
Expensive lesson.

In for results.
Doing this from memory, but here is the math.
Typical Heinie/10-8/Warren rear pairs with a .215 front (sometimes a .235 depending upon the pistol).
HD front is .215 tall by .144 wide (and rear HD is .169 wide). So HD .215 x .144 should work with the Heinie .156 rear, although be slightly tighter which shouldn't hurt accuracy.

I came across the Heinie Slant Pro rear (for the G17, 19 26 etc) in my box of junk. If someone wants it to try out shoot me a PM. The POA/POI is closer to the top of the HD blade instead of center of the front dot. After years of shooting Sigs, it didn't work out for my OCD. For a service pistol the difference falls into the category of splitting hairs.
Back to town, and the Heinie .156 rear sight was waiting. Math says it should regulate just fine with my HD front, but I will confirm that on the range. I like the Heinie/HD combo, here it is:
oh, first to identify that thingee on the back can go here and order one:

Excellent...
For tritium, do folks like the one or two rear dot Heinie ledge sights? The Warren one dot was dim for my eyes, but I can't remember how the one dot Heinie rear worked.

I much prefer the 2 tube rear Heinie. The tubes are smaller than the front and, for me, gave better results in dim light. In my hands, the straight eight concept was less precise, especially at any real distance.
Another option for Glocks is that Ameriglo makes a their ProGlo front in heights that match Heinie and Warrens.

I am currently running Ameriglo Defoors. I really like the plain clean rear sight of the defoors. I am curious if the HD front will work with my current rear? I am guessing they are all .144 wide? I also assume that I would use whatever height I am currently using on the Defoors?
I finally got to shoot the HD front sight paired with a Heinie .156 rear. Shot out to 25 yards, and POA/POI is right on. I will get some more to replace the sharp HD rear sights.
Can't you just take a small file and round off the sharp places? I have to confess that I am always filing on my rear sights. Then a little cold blue.

I was curious about that as well. Some people hate doing work like that but I've seen plenty of rear sights dehorned for user comfort.

I am not fond of cold blue on my carry gun sights, as I am in enough bad conditions, in my experience, cold blue often equals rust.

Great to know. Thanks for the update.
Is there a rear with yellow lamps that will work with the HD front? I like the idea of the yellow rear tritium sights from Ameriglo but prefer the HD front. The HD rears with the green lamps is confusing in near darkness.

A common thing some people do is hit the rear lamps with a red sharpie. But after running HDs for a little bit I really don't have a problem with running all green tritium.
It appears that Trijicon makes the combo I wanted and I just didn't know:

This morning, I saw an abrasive pad, and decided I would try to improve the comfort of the HD rear sight on my G43. I rubbed on the edges, definitely softened it, and left what in a revolver thread would be referred to as honest wear. Files are generally above my pay grade, but a pad I can do.
