A friend of mine, who works in the industry and is very knowledgeable about distribution, told me that last week for the first time in a very long time the supply of ammo had reached a level that he expects prices for 1000 rounds of quality 9 mm to be back in the $300 range.

$300 would be nice but $200 is where it was pre-riots. I still feel like we are being royally screwed. I keep hearing/seeing comments saying that all the ammo manufactures are cranking out all they possibly can. So they are selling more than they ever have and the price is at least 50% higher than it should be. I don't know where in the distribution chain the $ go but I suspect each stage adds their own part of the 50%.

That was probably sometime in the early 70's. I think I purchased my first new pickup for under 5K. $4700 sticks in my head.

I just got a haircut for $20. Took less than 10 minutes. 2 years ago I could get the same haircut for $15. That's 12.5% inflation every year.

At that rate gas will be $4/gal this time next year.

I'd love to be able to get reliable HP ammo at $30 for 50. However,....

I've currently got about 200 rounds of HP split between PNC 115gr & Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP. I'd like to be able to stockpile a few hundred more. I've seen gel test expansion info for both of these rounds that show pretty reliable expansion. And so far, they both run w/o any problems in ea of my pistols,... But DAMN!!! Even now, it's over $40-$60 a box depending on where you can find it.

If anyone can point me to something relating to the Ammoshop or Norma JHP info I'd appreciate it. (I've searched Google,.. but then, My Google-fu really SUCKS!). Why is it every time I search for something to "Go Bang" I get LOTS of Porn links??? ;):D:D:D

Norma was founded in 1902 by the Enger brothers from Oslo, Norway, who had founded Norma Projektilfabrik A/S a few years earlier

The name “Norma” has nothing to do with the word “Norge”, which is the Norwegian word for Norway, although you might think so. No, quite simply one of the brothers was extremely keen on the opera by Bellini entitled Norma. The Swedish shooting movement needed a supplier in Sweden, and a request was made for Norma Projektilfabrik A/S to set up in Sweden: at this time, Sweden and Norway were both part of a union. The brothers took a train to Sweden and set up their business in Åmotfors, some 20 kilometers from the border with Norway.

A BRAND NEW BEGINNING

From the very beginning, and until halfway through the 20th century, the company’s business was dominated by the production of military ammunition and ammunition for rifles, but the range of hunting equipment gradually became more and more interesting. Norma started to make contacts on the international market at this time. This, together with the company’s interest in the military, resulted in modern ways of thinking and led to new products with outstanding precision.

Nils Kvale together with Roy Weatherby has been an invaluable part of Norma’s enormous success during the latter half of the 20th century. Bought 2x50 round boxes of the Norma 158-grain Safeguard JHP standard pressure .38 for a 1952 Model 36 I got recently. It's a beautiful gun and I don't want to stress it with +P.

Used the last 4 of my zip to avoid taxes (works for some reason on the Norma site) which shaved off about $4, used the code welcome10 to shave off another 10%. Full disclosure: The owners of that company are personal friends. Having said that....

I have purchased two cases of this ammo. I took 180 rounds total out of the two different cases. I ran them through a nicely used Gen5 G19, an LTT 92X Compact that has been my carry gun for three years, and a LNIB Sig 239. I had zero functional issues, and the ammo shot very nice groups.

I pulled another batch of ammo from the cases, and examined it visually. Primers were all perfectly seated, and the projectile seating depth was all uniform. I ran each round through a Wilson case gauge with no issues observed.

I'm definitely buying more.

If you are going to Tac-Con, you can pay for the ammo, and the company will deliver it to you at Tac-Con. Very nice way to not fly with ammo. :)

Carry revolvers - low - the usual J frames - sold. The lone LCR in 327 Mag still there as it has been for months at $609. It tempts me but not that much. The .380 still had flare and led to failures to go into battery. Ran it all through a crimp die and it's been 100 percent.

The .38 SPL and .357 Mag have no crimp. Not worried with the .38 (bought a couple cases just before plandemic), but wouldn't want to run it in .357.

Haven't bought any 9mm Geco. I overbought 9mm ball in the Trump years, so I still haven't needed to buy any at pandemic prices.

I just went thru 1K of the USA Geco 115 fmj. I didn’t have any feed/fire issues with any of my 3 pistols.

Altho I don’t have a lot of experience to compare with, but I thought it shot a little hot myself. I really noticed it in my Hellcat. Not quite so much in the Glock or Walther. But That Hellcat’s a snappy pistol to begin with, so,..? 🤷*♂️ I couldn’t say if it was any more or less “dirty.”

I went ahead & ordered one of those Geco cans of loose 124gr. I’m hoping it’s not as snappy. But nowadays, brass cased ammo for less than 32¢ a round, shipped?? I’ll put up with a little snap. 🤣😉

Still, I do prefer the Norma 124 when its in stock & on sale.

That's not a bad deal currently at 300 bucks a case. I already have a few cases stashed, but am tempted.

It almost always patterns better than the 9 pellet. I do have two friends that have barrels that do pattern better with the 9 than the 8.

And Tom Givens recently snagged a 1301 that liked the #1 Flite Control better than the 6 or 9 pellet Flite control 00 Buck. Go figure.

The US made "Geco" 115 grain FMJ ammunition I received have a "JAG" head stamp (which I've never seen before). I maintain my prior comments that this ammunition is snappier and dirty compared to the Norma (or Swiss origin Geco) I've used in the past.

It felt like shotgun ammo, at least “sporting” hadn’t had quite the price spike over the last coupe of years, but now the least expensive 12ga #8 2&3/4” 1oz I can find is over $400/1k shipped for Browning or Federal (the two brands I’ve shot before) or right around $400/1k shipped for “Fetter (https://www.ammunitiondepot.com/fetter-1-75-fetter-competition-12-gauge-2-75-1-oz-7-5-shot.html)” which I’ve never heard of and some quick googling indicates is some sort of Russian ammo.

Contrast that with $300 shipped back in November of 2020 for Browning, which was $6/box before shipping.

Anyone more familiar with the ammo market, shotgun in particular, have any suggestions as to whether I should buy at $40l/case now or expect it to drop again? is this price spike relatively recent or did I get “lucky” back in November 2020?

I'm hesistant on Geco, as I've seen issues with the crimp in .380, .38 SPL, and .357 mag.

The .380 still had flare and led to failures to go into battery. Ran it all through a crimp die and it's been 100 percent.

The .38 SPL and .357 Mag have no crimp. Not worried with the .38 (bought a couple cases just before plandemic), but wouldn't want to run it in .357.

Haven't bought any 9mm Geco. I overbought 9mm ball in the Trump years, so I still haven't needed to buy any at pandemic prices.

Im actually concerned that I DIDN’T get an email! I have over 2000 rounds of the Norma red bx 9mm which I’ve purchased recently in the past 4-5 months. That is on top of the 1k of loose Geco batch that the squib round came from,…. Now I’ve returned appx 500-600 rounds of that Geco ammunition & AMMOSHOP has refunded my full purchase price,.. but not a single mention was made of a Recall in any of our email communications, and I certainly haven't been offered any 20% discount code. 🤷*♂️

Recently, I managed to snag a couple hundred rounds of 124 HST @$35 per bx of 50 with free shipping. That was the best price I’ve seen since I started shooting 2 years ago,.. The US made "Geco" 115 grain FMJ ammunition I received have a "JAG" head stamp (which I've never seen before). I maintain my prior comments that this ammunition is snappier and dirty compared to the Norma (or Swiss origin Geco) I've used in the past.

Further to my last post on this, AmmoShop has confirmed that this ammunition is part of the recall. I'll note that besides my earlier comments, I also experienced one malfunction (FTRB with a Staccato P) during the one range session I used this ammunition. It did not leave a positive impression and I had already resolved not to purchase any more; AmmoShop has already sent me a shipping label to return it.

Yes- I think that this is as much a function of SGA’s post-pandemic pricing as it is TSUSA’s “good” pricing.
For about 7-8 years, I pretty much defaulted to buying from SGA, as they almost always had the best/near best price, and their service was always great. Since mid-2020, SGA just doesn’t seem to be able to offer the kind of deals (relative to other sources) that they used to.

I have also had good experiences with TSUSA, and managed to come out ahead with the Prime membership that I bought in Jan 2020, even though there was essentially nothing left to buy by May of that year.

I went for the Federal HST. For whatever reason my Hellcat doesn’t like the Gold Dot 124 jhp. 3” groups with the Federal 147 turn into 5”-6”+ groups with the GD. It’s Fine with the Lawman 124 tho!! Go figure. 🤷

I was avoiding them as pretty much a scam outfit. Early in the pandemic “AmmoGeddon” they had a metric S*%# Tonne of really bad reviews. S lot of them involving some sort of Ammo supply membership.

That is a good price nowadays for the HST. But I’m hesitant to order due to their Abysmal past record of complaints.
I cant say I’ve seen any recent positive reviews to rejuvenate their rep. Any feedback on this?

Been on the prime membership for 5 years. Really competitive pricing on range FMJ and HST/Gold Dot, especially years 1 and 2.

COVID was rough, for everyone, and TargetSports was not spared.

In my first 2 years the Prime "gift" was additional single boxes of ammo I had bought before (HST, Fed Fusion, Gold Dot, etc.). In the last couple of years, it's been largely throw away items (Hoppes cleaning kit, Blackhawk shit mag pouch).

So that sucks, but I can cut them some slack with ammo being what it is the last few years.

Velocity has had some fantastic deals lately. I've ordered x3 and they were all very well packaged and protected.

As a point of contrast, I got 250 rounds of Winchester RA40B in 5 50-round boxes from Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore that were delivered today and while the sale was great ($26 per box of 50 for a DocGKR-approved loading for my incoming Glock 22 Gen 5 MOS), they were packaged loose on a box with wiggle room and not so much as a piece of crumpled paper to stop them from sliding around. Fortunately they're not much worse for the wear but that's luck more than anything.

I strongly favor places like SGAmmo and Velocity that use cling-wrap or tape to make sure the boxes stay intact in transit. It's a small effort to make and it helps the ammo survive transit much better.
