View Full Version : Who do you recommend for Glock grip reductions?

Hi all,
I am considering getting one of the G19's grip reduced along with some other grip work. I'm talking a significant backstrap reduction similar to what Robar or Bowie does, scallop mag release area, better stippling, undercut trigger guard, molded mag well, and mag cutouts. I want to change the grip angle to be more traditional. Who do you recommend? I want quality first and foremost and a reasonable price, but I don't want to wait 6 months. A lesser known person is fine. It doesn't have to be picture-perfect, just be functional. Here are some I'm aware of:

http://www.bowietacticalconcepts.com/
http://www.coldborecustom.com/
http://www.enhancedprecisionproducts.com/
http://www.robarguns.com/
http://www.weaponworx.com/
That last one I listed (WeaponWORX) looks interesting because they actually request you send them pictures of your grip and make the grip with measurements for a better fit.
The other option I'm considering if simply to try out one of Lone Wolf's Timberwolf frames. Thoughts on that? All my guns are for carry/self-defense, so I'm not sure if these Timberwolf frames are 100% GTG.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Sweat Muddy Bloody (http://smbguns.com/) also has a good reputation, I believe they are who does the work if you request gripwork if you send your gun in to ATEi. Complete ZEV lowers can also be found, though there are those here that don't complete trust them.

I really like the work CBC did to my G17. Wouldn't hesitate to use Boresite, Bowie, or Sweaty Muddy Bloody. LAV also recommended http://www.tacticaltexture.com/.
Very impressed with the quality and turnaround time of Enhanced Precision Products. Not sure what the turnaround time is now but two years ago I got my guns back in a week.

Ben at Boresight did a great job on my Gen 3 17.

I have a gen 3 -17 & -19 that were done by Lew Gosnell. Am EXTREMELY happy with his work. He can be found here:

Just a guess, but I suspect Robar has been doing longer than most shops. They have done three for me, starting about 2006. All were on G21s or G30s and all were well done, on time and reasonably priced.

The Zev/Glockworx grip work is nicely done, if the visuals suit you.
The latest Boresight work though... Outta this world.

This realize this kind of work is purely subjective, but I've had Cold Bore Custom do one reduction job and three other stippling jobs on my Glocks. Even with a recent price increase (his prices initially were unbelievably reasonable), it's still the best value out there IMO and his work is very detailed. In times past, Lane has actually turned around some of my work in just over a week - and that included the shipping time on both ends. I think he's much busier than that now though and the queue on my last job was about 3 weeks IIRC.

SMB aka Sweaty Muddy Bloody.
Top notch, they do LE/MIL discounts and lead time is approx 8 weeks.

Just a guess, but I suspect Robar has been doing longer than most shops. They have done three for me, starting about 2006. All were on G21s or G30s and all were well done, on time and reasonably priced.
Having had several pistols done up in Norton Special configurations, and one all-NP3 P7, and having examined dozens of other pistols that RoBar has refinished and/or did come metal cutting on, I have come to believe that Robar is second to none on metal work.
I am not so impressed with their polymer grip work. A colleague sent a G30 to them, for grip reduction and texturing. The grip reduction seems to be dome properly. The "texturing", OTOH, leaves a ton to be desired. I'm no chemist, and cannot use state materials to test it, but this "texturing" looks (and feels) an awful lot like truck bed liner to me. When it began chipping, I called them and spoke to a CS guy, who swore up and down it was NOT truck bed liner. But he wouldn't tell what it WAS, either. Kind of like the guy who gooned up one of my HK45 Compacts when he stippled it (mags won't drop free, he warped the mag well); he won't tell me WHAT he did to the frame, citing proprietary this and that… bullshit, he used a soldering iron and a pointy tip; there's no magic in stippling. There is SKILL involved, certainly… but no magic process.
Anyway… part of the moral of this story is, there are a few long-time folks, like David Bowie, who have been whittling on polymer frames for a bloody long time and know what they are doing. I have three Bowie Glock 19s, and have handled a half-dozen others. his work is simply superb. I would have thought RoBar could be included in that small group, but I damn sure wouldn't send any of my guns to them for any polymer frame work. Metal work? Sure, you bet.
The other part of the moral of the story… be EXTREMELY diligent in your research before sending your frame off. In my case, the G30 was sent, on my recommendation (he did not want to wait the six months it takes for Bowie to do his magic; he now regrets that impatience) to who I thought would be a primo vendor… based on my experience with them in another medium; metal.
The HK45C frame was sent to an individual who came highly recommended by somebody whose judgement I trust implicitly, and in fact has a couple of guns done by this fellow that he is very happy with. I certainly don't blame the man who recommended this guy to me. Like I always say… some days you get chicken, some days you get feathers.
