I took a vacation in Montreal and Quebec City this weekend and was taken aback somewhat by the uniforms police wore.

This is a typical example of regular patrol officers I saw.

They also had stickers covering their patrol cars.

I ended up talking to a cop in a restaurant while we were both waiting in line. Apparently both the pants and the stickers are a protest against a pension reform measure. I just thought it was pretty interesting. This wasn't just one or two guys but almost every single officer I saw while I was in Montreal.

As a side note, they issue Walther P99's as their standard pistol, which seemed like an odd choice, but the guy I talked to seemed pretty happy with his. I think they are a cool gun and am surprised they haven't caught on more elsewhere.

Is there a clown military somewhere that I don't know about? I don't care if they took my pension, there's no way I'd wear socks like that.

Indeed. Zero apparent self respect but get into a shootout and you've seized the advantage. I keep looking back at them wondering if they're even real.

Montreal emergency services are big on turning stuff weird colours to, I guess, embarrass the city into negotiating.

When I lived there, the firemen went on some kind of job action in which they painted all the firetrucks stupid colours with powdered tempera paint.

I'm guessing the goal here is to look as stupid and obnoxious as possible without technically violating their contract.

Having spent lots of time wearing tube socks like that with shorts and Superstars I am not sure I'd have an issue wearing that... Maybe a different color and some bright laces on the boots...

I will assume he got those socks off a corpse that was partially sticking out from a recently landed house.

It's like the Ferguson PD had a love child with the cat in the hat.

I think we should all wear socks like that and knickers too, then we wouldn't look so militaristic. We'd just look like we were living in a tree baking cookies.

We know all of your gear would be stitched with Neon Green thread. I think John Willis would hook you up.

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard says his government will introduce “measures” this fall to force police officers to wear their full uniform after city of Montreal officers wore fatigues during the state funeral of former premier Jacques Parizeau on Tuesday as part of their continuing pressure tactics. He did not spell out what form the measures his government will introduce this fall will take. Couillard called it “regrettable” that police chiefs have tolerated the rule-breaking on uniforms as municipal unions around Quebec protest the pension legislation.

Constable Mathew Vill is seen in the video wearing a cowboy hat as a pressure tactic against pension reform. On Friday, four days after the incident, John Chilcott received three tickets in the mail: for obstructing the work of a police officer, failing to turn off his vehicle when pulled over and for using his hazard lights unnecessarily. He plans to contest the tickets, which represent a total fine of $1,068. Questioned by the Montreal Gazette, a spokesperson for the Châteauguay police department released a statement on Monday confirming that pepper spray was used during “an intervention after an individual refused to collaborate following a Highway Safety Code infraction.” Individuals at the scene were offered medical assistance but it was refused, the statement says. The department said it couldn’t provide any other details because the case is before the courts, adding that anyone who is unhappy with the conduct of an officer can file a complaint with the police ethics commissioner. In Quebec, police officers are permitted to use pepper spray if they feel threatened or are in imminent danger.
