View Full Version : Single-clip holster moving around

I purchased a holster from Blue Line Concealment for my P320 Compact, originally thinking to try working it for AIWB carry. It's the Inside the Waistband Holster with Hard Loop, found here:

http://bluelineconcealment.com/inside-the-waistband-holster-with-hard-loop/

While my endeavors to utilize the holster for appendix carry ultimately flopped (the holster wasn't comfortable for me in that position), I've decided to utilize it for the time being as my regular EDC holster. It's currently replacing my Alien Gear IWB, because I'm tired of the leather body shield drooping over the mouth of the holster.

My only issue, is the holster moves around on me. Earlier today I got up from a seated position and noticed my gun was printing something fierce, but I was able to adjust it before anyone other than myself noticed. I've had a similar experience in the past when I attempted to carry my P229 in a Galco Trident with single belt-clip. It ultimately ended up with me returning to carrying that gun in the Crossbreed holster, despite the drooping leather.

My question is, for those of you who carry with single-clip holsters, how do you keep your rig from moving all over the damn place? Or should I hasten my next holster purchase? I'm leaning towards a JM Custom, but torn between the trying the AIWB or purchasing a regular IWB.

I've carried three different pistols in a Blade Tech UCH (now discontinued, sadly) at ~3-5 o'clock and haven't had a problem with the guns shifting. I think it probably comes down to how wide the belt loop is

Is your belt sized for the clip? Like does it barely fit? That's been kind of a thing with clip holsters in my experience.

What kind of belt are you wearing with the BLC holster?

I looked at the holster you are using. That is a pretty narrow clip, and I can see where it would move around a bit. I use a single clip holster for my Shield and have no problem, I has a much wider clip (2 to 2-1/2 times as wide). The offset clip such as on your holster, will also tend to move more than a centered one; the offset clip is easier to conceal (tradeoffs are something we all deal with in concealed carry).

I have not experienced that with FIST clip kydex holsters with their "FBI cant". Quite solid.
Straight drop holsters planned for AIWB and then pressed into 3:30 IWB carry can be a little different. The FIST G26 straight drop I sometimes use at 3:30 doesn't shift but its a very compact package pulled in quite low and tight. But a full length magazine full of ammo would be a lot more weight swinging around.

I use a Dark Star Gear AIWB for a SP101 and a PHLSTER Access for a G19. Both stay put just fine.

This mod was created for AIWB, but maybe something similar would work?

The heel pad might be a little thick for normal IWB carry (or maybe not?).
If you can find a flatter piece of that gel material, the "gumminess" sticks to undershirt /underwear material and helps anchor the holster. Failing that some people use moleskin for the same effect.
At any rate it's cheap and easy to try.

Issue with single clip holsters is that they will move around on you, especially AIWB.

I have several AIWB holsters I will review (eventually) that have a single clip:

Rubber City, Spartan Village and NorCal Kydex - (link to Rubber City holster pix on my blog) - http://vdmsr.blogspot.com/2014/10/rubber-city-holsters-akron-aiwb.html

All of them have some issues with moving around and being exactly where I want them to be when I want them to be there.

The only way, I have found, that I found a single clip to stay in place and keep a holster in place is with a metal clip that #wulfburht uses.

This holster stays exactly where I want it, and it doesn't move around.

Other types are the type of setup holster makers like Coffman kydex use - spaced out loops:

As well as JM customs and Eidolon who use two sets of clips or a wide single attachment point (kydex loop from JM), seems to be the best setup.

Yeah, unfortunately even the absolute best clips will move around. I have a JMCK AIWB for a G23 that I ordered with the 1.5" clip. It is hands down, by far, the most stable clip on holster I have ever used. The JM clips are worlds better than anything found on an Incog. I have one on a mag pouch as well. It does move around a little with vigorous activity but it's certainly not coming off my belt. It just cants slightly. There is a guy on here somewhere who ran his through a force on force class and had no complaints. That said, I have ordered some split kydex loops to replace the clips.

A single clip holster that's worked for me as an AIWB is the CCC Versa Clip. The picture on the web site doesn't do the holster full justice; the kydex covers the entire length of the pistol. The clip is wide enough to be stable with the Kahr P9 is use it for. Concealment is pretty good for a non-dedicated AIWB (flat stomach helps here).

Just be aware that the Versa Clip is not designed as a full-coverage holster. Mine for a Kahr CW9 is, which was a pleasant surprise, but the other two are "belt slide " coverage equivalent.

Are you wearing a nylon or leather belt with your holster. Nylon belts are usually thinner than leather and will often allow easier movement of your holster on the belt. The holster may stay in place better with a thicker belt.

Dale Fricke, who by the way is currently having a 15% off sale, will make his loops for either a thinner nylon belt or a thicker leather belt.

Single clip AIWB rigs are inherently unstable, for a variety of reasons:

Different composition weapons will have different balance points (single vs. double stack, polymer vs. aluminum vs. steel framed, different slide lengths). Optics and lights will also change things, though they aren't present in this example.

AIWB rigs are less stabilized by belt curvature then most HIWB rigs on most people - the belt section they attach to generally being flatter then what is found near the hip. Having less curvature, they don't benefit from that additional stiffness and resistance to rolling.

AIWB rigs worn outside of the natural cleft flanking the abdominals and extending the inguinal crease may also wander more as they are not out of a niche.

Adding shrink tubing to the overhook, moleskin to the bodyshield, and/or some form of wedge may reduce the wander-factor with what you've already invested in.
