Margaret Rhodes, the Queen’s cousin, said the then-Queen Elizabeth had learned to shoot a pistol in the gardens of the palace, in order to protect her family from invading Germans. Claiming her aunt had feared parachutists dropping into the grounds and “whisking them away”, she added the numerous rats scared out of their homes by bombs made the perfect target practice.
