View Full Version : 15/22 SBR or CMMG conversion kit?

Just today got my SBR approved (WOOT!). I already have a stock 15/22 and mags. Would it make more sense to get the Better-Mag (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P1LFKYY/) 15/22 magazine adapter for my SBR and the CMMG conversion kit or should I just SBR my 15/22?

I'd go with the kit, a $200 tax stamp on a .22 seems costy when you could combine that with the SBR you already have.

What about if I want to use a rimfire suppressor with the CMMG kit?

My TacSol upper was supposedly the best out there but wasn't nearly as reliable as my 15/22 is.

Given my options I think I would re barrel the 22 upper with a 4"(and change) barrel to keep the faster more reliable ammp subsonic and use it on my stamped lower.

Use a rounded hammer (ALG) with the 22 conversion upper. I've had 3 instances where the gun burped out a mag in a heartbeat with a notched hammer.

I have a CMMG complete upper (16") which I bought shortly before the M&P 15/22 was released. Cost is about the same Given decent quality ammo it runs 100% with both CMMG and Black Dog magazines. I haven't tried it with the Better-Mag and S&W mags yet.

CMMG offers a 9" barrel 22LR upper.

Some people do not give sound advice in all situations!

SBR that bitch. The suppress it. You'll be $400 in taxes into a $400 gun!

Makes perfect sense in my world.

Add a $600 MRDS in a LaRue mount and BFG sling and you have effectively put lipstick on a pig.

I'd recommend a dedicated .22LR upper like the ones from Tactical Solutions (http://www.tacticalsol.com/ar-22-series-uppers), but given the cost it might be better to SBR your 15/22.

Pretty much this. I'd SBR the 15-22, personally.

A friend of mine SBRd one of those cheap GSG5 pistols, added a PDW stock and K-foregrip, and a Gemtech can. It's basically a semi .22 MP5K-PDW now, and cool as hell.

The dedicated uppers are expensive, much more expensive than SBR'ing the 15/22 I have on hand. I'm researching rolling my own upper as well.

Might as well SBR the 15/22.

How short is that barrel, Sean?

Whatever route you go, LL, I expect you to put a can on it, and start a thread with instructions on how to play Funky Town on the steel at every local range. :D

That's a given :D Two rimfire cans already bought and in NFA jail

Had a taccom dedicated 22 upper that I ran on my sbr with a better mag... While good it doesn't compare with this:

Absolutely runs like a sewing machine! I went with a 7" barrel, swr warlock 2 peaking out the front of the handguard.

If you already have the 15/22 and a trust, gratification is only around $250 and 35 days away. Do it. You won't regret it.

I have a Warlock 2 on the way, tell me about yours.

NFA shit isn't necessarily supposed to make sense (other than being fucking awesome).

NFA is a lot like motorcycles in that regard... it's hard to apply logic and reason to illogical and unreasonable purchases.

6.5 inches.

I don't like to pay or wait for shit like a simple barrel chop and thread. Don't pay if you don't have to.

I'm getting the feeling that my hypothesis about how much fun a suppressed .22 SBR can be is right :D

I'd just cobble together a SBR upper. I'm using a non-FA AR upper, 4.5" CMMG bbl and kit. The CMMG folks have done some very nice mods to the .22 ARs (compared to older school kits I used) and the 4.5" bbl keeps bulk .22 ammo subsonic.

After changing the lightened trigger spring I had with a black dog machine kit, it works great semi and FA.

How are those Tac Sol uppers? I'm currently debating between the govt style and the lightweight variant.

I do like mine, I think it is well made. I have the older model with the rail system. It's quite accurate.

You do need to use it with a rounded hammer, rather than a notched one, in your AR lower.

I just decided to standardize on the M&P 15-22 as that is what the rest of my shooting friends use. But my Tactical Solutions unit has been boringly reliable and very accurate. I may just give it to my daughter.
