Sorry for this...

Full disclosure: I'm a big fan of Ruger's revolvers.

My base exchange has a Ruger GP 141 for less than 550 out the door and they have a Smith 642 on sale for about 350. My only question is: does the GP 141 live up to the Ruger "bomb-proof" reputation? I know the GP 100 is a tank of a wheelgun, but I've never heard of a "GP 141".

My question is this: I've practically got the Smith bought (picking it up in the next couple days), but should I snag the Ruger on top of the J-frame or just stick with the J-frame and pick up the Ruger later on?

For reference: I'm buying the J-frame as a backup to my M&P9 FS while the Ruger would be more a collector's piece as I have a fascination with duty-gun sized revolvers.

A GP141 is a GP100. The 141 denotes that it is a 4.2" barrel.

ETA: If you can afford both, then you can't go wrong with the GP100. I have a 141 and a matte blue Wiley Clapp.

Something they built for Canadian sales, or?

will, the GP is a tank of a wheelgun, you won't wear it out.

I don't know, because I'm not a Canuck. I just checked Ruger's website, and they list the 4" model as having a 4"/4.2" barrel, so I guess the 4.2" is the Canadian version. I thought all of the 4" models were really 4.2", but I guess I was wrong. The GP141 is both of those barrel lengths.

Thanks for the replies. I'd never seen the designation before so it threw me off. Depending on how my funds work out I might be getting both.

No, all of the "4 inch" GP100s are actually 4.2 inches, Ruger just leaves off the "0.2" in most US based materials. This length is important because 1) Canada, and actually forced IDPA to change the way they measure revo barrel length in order to keep the GP100 legal.

Same reason Ruger kept the most of their rifle barrels 18 inch instead of 16 inch.
