I'm putting together a weekly practice session with some friends at Shoot Indoors in Broomfield. Right now it's looking like Wednesdays or Thursdays will work most consistently for us, and we prefer to arrive right at the 10am opening time for the emptiest range possible, but we're still working that out. If anyone in the general area wants to join in, we'd love to have you!

Is there a prerequisite level of skill/experience you're looking for with respect to who this is open to?

MDS

Not really, kobu. The only prerequisite is a serious, sober appreciation for safety at all times. These are informal sessions, so feel free to show up!

Looks like we'll be trying Wednesdays for now. I'll be there tomorrow at 10am if anyone can take a long early lunch!

Thanks for driving up, Kobu! Sorry for making you wait, and looking forward to the next time we can shoot together.

It was my pleasure! On the contrary, I'm glad we were able to link up eventually. Thanks for your patience with me re: my cringeworthy attempt at Dot Torture as well as for spotting me on ammo. Looking forward to next time! Until then, time for dryfire, dryfire, and then more dryfire...

MDS, do you still have places for new comers?

MDS
03-25-2015, 12:26 AM
Absolutely! I'll be out of town the rest of this week, but plan to be there next Wednesday. Come on out!

MDS, apologies for my no show yesterday, I ended up shooting at Bristlecone in Lakewood. I'm coming back to pistol shooting after a lengthy break and am in the process of choosing a pistol, Bristlecone has my shortlist available to rent so it made more sense to shoot there (they're also cheaper for range, rental and ammo!)

No worries, I'm glad you got out! I didn't make it myself, actually, hope to get there this afternoon.

How does bristlecone feel about draws, aiwb, and "rapid fire?"

They'll have an RO sign you off as good to go for drawing from a holster, I didn't ask about AIWB and I think on their "tactical" range rapid fire is fine but best check with them.

I found them friendly and helpful, the guys at Shoot Indoors just left you alone to get on with it which is far from bad but my experience at Bristlecone as a newbie and someone looking to buy a pistol was better. It's a bit more of a hike for me but worth the distance.

Cool, I'll have to swing by sometime. I think I may have visited a couple of summers ago and not been able to draw or rapid fire...maybe because the tactical range was in use? Anyway, worth giving a second chance! I can certainly understand how a helpful staff could be, ah, helpful. But I kind of like the attitude at Shoot Indoors....

MDS, are you shooting tomorrow?

Yeah! I still haven't made it to bristlecone, if you wanna meet there...?

Sounds good, what time's good?

I can, ah, "take my lunch" any time, so let me know what's convenient.

I normally get there not long after they open, early lunch work for ya?

I like it, indoor ranges seem to be most empty right at opening time on weekdays. :) I'll be there at 10am, then!

This sucks. You're going to my favorite range, and I'm stuck working.

Tell them, "Cash says 'hi'!" (they all know who I am)

They'll have an RO sign you off as good to go for drawing from a holster, I didn't ask about AIWB and I think on their "tactical" range rapid fire is fine but best check with them.

Just to point this out: Technically, the holster qualification is $30 for the "test" (easy to pass if you do a lot of practice). It's mostly safety-related, so they ensure you clear your holster, draw properly, don't muzzle yourself, and can safely re-holster. If you don't pass for whatever reason, the $30 is credited towards taking a holster class ($50). It's all with your unloaded gun, no shots fired. Took me about 7 minutes to pass, which I did on their first public opening day. After you pass, you are given a green card to hang in your lane (you may have to remind them each time), so the RSO knows you're holster-qualified.

As far as AIWB, the holster qualification is "per rig", if memory serves. I carry strong-side hip; so if I wanted to do cross-draw, or shoulder, or appendix carry, I'd have to go through it again.

As for rapid fire - it's really okay on both sides, but keep it within reason. They are actually more concerned about shooting too high or low, and hitting something other than the rubberized backstop. Some people would pull the target to about 7 yards, then kneel down and do headshots - instantly hitting the ceiling and probably a light somewhere. I've been known to unload a whole 15-round magazine with barely any time to realign my sights, and the RSOs didn't even blink.

It was a good trip, and the place is great! I can't imagine why I crossed it off my list when I was looking for local ranges. Maybe I simply missed it. When my membership at this other range expires, I'm switching.

Good to meet you, hiro, and we'll have to make a habit of this!

Likewise! A fine start to the day!

Ever use the turning targets? I don't recall drills using them, are they seen as a gimmick?

I've only shot at Go Shoot Indoors the once so I'm due shooting there again but I like Bristlecone. Don't think I'll be shooting next week but should be good for the week following.

I have. They have some pre-entered programs, which will change speeds, turn left and right, change distances, and the like. Some of them get pretty challenging (short time to shoot and a long distance). If you press the "Program" button on the screen, you'll find them. I haven't yet entered my own program - not sure if they are kosher with that, yet.

Last time I was there a couple of weeks back I entered my own but didn't save it, took me more time than I wanted it to so I left it alone today. At least one of the RO's knows the programmes but I've not asked for him to set them up.

Is there training merit from using them?

Is there training merit from using them?

Some. More about reaction timing and adjusting distances. It's limited to a single-lane range, of course, so there's only so much you can do. Still, I request the Tactical Bay every time it's open, so I can use them. Also, since I do a lot of holster work, and the younger kids are usually in the pistol-only side, it helps to prevent the 12-year-old from going "hey, Dad! I'm gonna do a quick draw!" because he sees me drawing.

Not perfect, but I'll take any mitigation I can get.

So now that I'm back in town for the summer, is this still going on and if so did we switch ranges?

I dunno. But if this does ever switch to Bristlecone, I'll start coming more often, since my range fee is covered (I'm a charter member).

OK, digging this thread up.

Things went kinda sideways for me last year and I had to take a step back from shooting. Am pleased to say I'm back, now own a Glock and am looking to shoot as frequently as possible - hoping to make it weekly but my work schedule can make it hard to work a set day each week.

MDS, apologies for disappearing, are you still looking for regulars?
