View Full Version : gentleman's folder, Spyderco Nilakka

Decided I needed a gentleman's folder for "date night" when a tactical knife just doesn't cut it.
I like the lines of the Finnish Pukka knives so I grabbed a Spyderco Nilakka Pukka folder.
Sweet knife for the sharp dressed man.

Because I haven't cut myself with a new knife in ohhhh, about 24 hours. Which is a new record.

Is it just me or does that pic make it look like the thumbhole would be burried in the grip when closed?

Other side is scooped out to allow access.
JodyH

Yup, other side has a deep scallop for thumb hole access.
This dude is slick opening and super scary sharp.
I don't think the edge will hold under much use and will need regular freshening up, but damn... it's like a razor.

Interesting. Just last night I found myself gussied up for date night and without a suitable pocket decoration.
I'd like to see what some other folks carry when they're wanting a dressy folder.

I like the Boker Orion up top or the Benchmade Terzuola Park Avenue in the middle, but... that Spyderco Pukka is just a jaw-droppingly good-looking knife.

Nope, it's some type of hard polymer. I'd have to check what type.

I had the same issue, and actually went out on date night which reinforced it.
What I have wound up with is a Keeshaw... Leek, I think, that I found in my gun room, with a deep carry aftermarket clip from EBay. If it works, I'm going to buy a fancier version of the same knife but with a Damascus blade or something.

Congrats on the new knife! it sure is a looker.
I picked up a CRK Sebenza 21 a few months ago. My logic was that it was a good looking knife that it could be a "Gentleman's Folder" when I'm dressed nice, but still be robust enough to be used as an EDC.

Yea, mine will be leaving for a week or two to get the custom scales fitted.
I might have to buy another one, "one is none, two is one" and all that jazz.

My Nilakka with it's new custom burled mesquite wood scales.
I was in a Texas frame of mind when I chose mesquite, and it came out exactly the way I wanted.
Now it's a classy F'n knife.

I can't say enough good things about "Sketchenscales" from BladeForums.
Steve keeps you in the loop every step of the way, from choosing the block of wood to exactly how you want the shaping done.
These scales came out exactly the way I wanted because of that communication.
More pics.

Gentleman's folder can mean a lot of things. What features and function are you looking for?
These would be my three that, in my head, fit the definition:
60268
60269
Spyderco Delica Damascus. Pretty, relatively light. May be a little too aggressive looking for the office. Purely for blade quality almost certainly the best of the three but much more expensive too (though this one was a gift and I didn't spend the money). I'd cry if it fell out of my pocket and got lost :-)
Opinel No. 8 Garden. Light weight (by feel the lightest of the three). Cheap. Locks open and closed. With the exposed blade back (Unlike most Opinels) can be opened and closed one handed though not tactically fast. Basically a folding paring knife does a decent job with light duty tasks. May not be as flashy as a Gentleman's knife should be. Utilitarian but honestly my favorite of the three.
Laguiole en Aubrec 9 cm. Very non-threatening and classic. A conversation starter. Functional for light tasks. Has an improved slip joint that make it less likely to fold on you than many slip joints. Definitely two hands required for opening or closure. Tip can be damaged if you don't close it easy. The slender handle does not fill your hand and gives a little less control and power in use.

In the pre-covid days, I carried this every day in a suit. Never seemed out of place. https://chrisreeve.com/collections/mnandi/products/mnandi
Also semi-recently picked up one of these and would recommend them for the "gentleman's folder" role. https://www.lionsteel.it/n/en/product/1866/bm_bestman
I don't know if I would call it a gentleman's folder, exactly, but I found the Kershaw Nura 3 inch model on sale at Blade HQ for $17 and I have to say, for the sale price it seems like a real bargain and will fill that role pretty well for me.

I have a gold class Valet with a Damascus blade and the purple/blue anodized handles, excellent choice for a Gentleman's folder.
I'll dig it our of the safe for pictures when I get some free time in a week or so.
