Heads up, the new fixed blade P'kal was in stock at BladeHQ this morning. I already have mine coming, so now I'm informing the unwashed masses.

Sweet looking blade at a good price. Looks like it may be a bit harder to conceal than the elusive Shivworks Clinch Pick. Give us a review when you get yours.

I already have a semi-custom fixed blade P'kal that works really well. I expect the Spyderco to be just as good.

Are we talking about this Spyderco: http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=914 ?

I ask because, it's set up to be edge in as well as edge out.

That's the one. It does sound pretty versatile.

From the page:

"The defining characteristic of the Reverse is its unique reversible handle that allows the orientation of the blade’s edge to be changed from Douglas’ preferred edge-in orientation to Janich’s edge-out style while maintaining the same highly evolved handle ergonomics. The handle consists of two textured G-10 scales machined to create a hollow cavity for the blade tang. Removing the three bolts in the handle with a Torx® T-8 wrench (included) allows the scales to be easily removed and mounted to the tang with the blade’s edge in either orientation."

It doesn't sound as solid as a regular fixed blade knife.

I'll take your word for it as you know know this design inside out. :D

I guess I liked the idea of a full tang fixed Pikal from Spyderco.

I think it is still full tang; just the scales can be reversed to face the other way.

Looks nice but at 7.74 in length seems like it would be hard to carry concealed comfortably.

JodyH

My current fixed blade P'kal is 7" and works great in its kydex pocket sheath. Another 3/4" (+1/2" blade, +1/4" handle) shouldn't be a problem.

JodyH have you tried carrying it on the belt? Just curious if a knife that size could be carried concealed that way.

Where on the belt and how? They work well vertical.

On the belt like a clinch pick or similar.

It's a little long for that. The blade length works but the handle pokes out.

Depends on the guy. There are some bigger, taller, wider guys that have been carrying Disciples in the Clinch Pick orientation for at least a decade.

Agreed.

I carry a full size HiTS (7.875″ overall length, per the website) horizontal on the left of my belt buckle with a slight angling downwards (not the Clinch Pick orientation but access is similar) and have no problems with concealment; then again, I'm 6'3".

A question for Mr Douglas, or anyone else. Is a trainer planned for this knife? I am always interested in buying a trainer, if at all possible.

Thanks very much.

I remember seeing that saw that on TPI when it was for sale. I was considering buying it, but you beat me to it.
You gotta be quick on TPI when it comes to buying pointy stabby things.
That place likes its taint stabbing utensils and they sell fast, I can't count the number of Ban knives I've missed out on by just minutes.

USPS tracking for my Spyderco shows Friday delivery.

Hmmm. The one I've got up has been languishing. Not that I mind.

I do often. I prefer the CP, but every now and then I get the itch to rock the bigger blade. Rarely have an issue with the size difference.

Got mine yesterday.

Question to the class: how are you guys concealing this on the belt? I tried several orientations with the included clip, which is good. I just can not get it so that I don't have a huge teepee effect on my shirt. I regularly conceal full size handguns AIWB but a small fixed blade seems very difficult. Interested in any advice/suggestions. Pictures would be helpful. Maybe this deserves a new thread.

I may end up loosening up the kydex a bit with a heat gun and using this as a neck knife. Less than ideal for the intended purpose though.

Evidence. Stick tang? Super easy to reverse though, the posts are even keyed so they only go in one way and can't rotate.

Can't edit my own posts...

Sort of answered my own question. It works quite well for me at 3:00, fast to draw although giving up the benefits of centerline. Also leaves room for spare mag at 11:00.

Received mine today after it was "lost" between Utah and New Mexico for over a week.

I reversed the handles to be a better taint stabber.
I also used a Dremel sanding drum to relieve the sheath so I could get a better grip it further down on the bolster.
I removed the belt clip and am running it as a sheathed pocket knife for now. I use a combination thumb push off and hook the sheath on my pocket as I draw the knife, it works great but I plan on adding a "shark fin" to the sheath later to better hook the pocket.

One thing you guys might consider doing to get a closer ride is to run it between the belt and the pants.

I tried that, is a little closer, but its just the long handle that is a problem. Honestly, I am not sure how you get a REI grip on a knife carried horizontally at 11:00 if you are right-handed anyway. Pulling straight up from 3:00 accomplishes that quite well. This is one of the many things I hope to learn more about if/when I can someday get into your class. Seeing if I can work the MDTS class in July, but three days is a tough sell to my home supervisor.

I think mine will be going up in the for sale section shortly. The handle is just too long for its designated purpose. JMO.

I'm having trouble with the long handle also. I'm thinking about cutting the grip between the 2nd and 3rd studs and rounding it off. Thoughts?

I'm working on shorter G10 handles. Time is being a bitch though.

Yeah, I know how that goes. The 2/3 length tang is a nice feature of this blade because new or modified handles can be shorter. I may get out the Dremel and disc sander...

G10 is nasty stuff. I worked outside, with a respirator and goggles. I used a dremel cutter with water to try to control the dust. Then I rounded it with a disc grinder and finished it with a file and emery paper.

A week ago I got my Dark Star Gear sheath for the Reverse. It allows the handle to ride much lower, as the mouth of the sheath is almost level with whatever you have it clipped to.

Regardless, it was still a bit too long so I had a friend chop my handle for me. Now I absolutely love this package. Carries perfectly at 11 o'clock. Entire package weighs exactly 5 oz.
