I am very excited for this! I recently moved to VA from MD. As much as i have enjoyed the matches at AAFG, the drive has been a bit to far.

I want to set everyone's expectations for these matches. AAFG enjoys 3 bays and can do 6-9 stages on a typical match. They also have a plethora of swingers, risers, in/out, clamshell, popups, and similar targeting systems. We will only be able to do 4-6 stages and they will mostly be static targets and we have one swinger which we have difficulty with almost every match. I will still make the stages challenging, but I wanted to set your expectations. Over time, it may be possible to add more targeting systems. If anyone wants to donate some targeting systems, we would be glad to promote them at the match, have a placard out, etc.

Thanks,
Cody Claxton
Match Dir.

Outstanding! I did a double take for a moment there and thought this was the KSTG thread for this month. You are a great choice for this! I can volunteer moving forward for the SO/Staff positions as I do for KSTG, however this month is too short notice (although I will definitely sign up to shoot the match).

Question: Is this going to be a regular slot at the NRA calendar and will we become a sanctioned IDPA Club? As you know, I need to get a classifier score on record so that I can take that IDPA 2.0 course at ITI/G4S.

Also, if we become a permanent club on the NRA roster (like the USPSA NOVAPS matches were) I would definitely consider donating to the war chest for steel poppers and other goodies...

Sorry for the multiple postings, but forgot a few things:
1) You will be required to have an NRA Range Card if you don't have one. If you are a NRA Range Member, then you have a range card, so you don't need to do anything more to shoot the match.
2) You will be required to take a short written, open book test to get the range card.
3) The one time fee is $10.

All of the normal range rules apply: No tracer rounds, no steel in the bullets, etc.

Everyone shooting the match must have the following skills:
Skills required to compete:
- Must be able to complete reloads with trigger finger indexed on side of frame, not anywhere near trigger guard;
- Must be able to holster one-handed, without weak hand anywhere near the gun or firearm;
- No use of SERPA style holsters for new shooters;
- Must be able to move from location to location during a COF with finger indexed on frame and away from trigger guard;
- Must be able to do a reload with muzzle downrange, like AAFG;
- You must be able to repeat these without having to think about it'
- You must have muzzle awareness for 180.

Thanks,
Cody

We are not sure this will be a regular match. It depends on how this first one goes and whether the USPSA group wants back in this slot.
Good question on the affiliation. Let's see how this first match goes.
Anyone who is a certified Safety Officer and club contact can submit classifier scores and run classifiers. So NRA doesn't have to be affiliated. But, it would be desirable. I will make sure you get your classifier done one way or another by the date.

Thanks,
Cody

Is the NRA promoting this match, otherwise we may have low attendance like we used to in the IPSC matches before we became a sanctioned club? Are you promoting the match?

I would be down for this. However, this month is a bust for me. Off to England on the 23th. :( I hope this becomes part of the normal rotation on the NRA range.

Good News! The NRA Range has confirmed that we have the 4th Tuesdays evening time slot for the foreseeable future. We have also added the NRA IDPA Club to the IDPA Website as an affiliated club. I have also created a dedicated email address: NRAIDPA@verizon.net. Please use this email for all correspondence. For now I will use the pistol-forum website for announcements, but I want to build a google groups list for notifications as well. Registrations will be done using clubs.practiscore.com and scoring will be done on practiscore as well.

I am seeking assistance for setup. Please let me know if you can help. I am also seeking a backup Match Director for those times when I may be out of town.

The April match will be a classifier.

Debbie Crews has arranged to get new target stands build but they won't be ready until April sometime.

Debbie Crews deserves a ton of thanks for making this arrangement. Please personally thank her when you see her at the range.

Hope to see you at Peacemaker IDPA this saturday AND at the NRA Match March 24.

We will have 5 stages and about 75 rounds.

In the meantime make sure you have these critical skills through dry fire practice:

1) You must be able to do a reload without your finger going into the trigger area. It must be indexed on the frame. (I have seen many expert shooters who think they never violate this rule, but as a Safety Officer running a timer I observe it happening all the time. It is a good idea to videotape yourself and watch what happens or have someone else observe. It amazes me how many people violate this safety rule.)
2) You must be able to move from one point of cover to another point of cover with the gun in your hand and your finger indexed on the frame. The only time your finger should ever be in the trigger area is when you are actually engaging a target. Practice this in dry-fire by moving at least three steps between standing positions, pull the trigger at targets, then move to the other point, pull the trigger at targets, then back and forth, focusing on moving your finger to index as soon as you finish pulling the trigger on targets.
3) You must be able to do a reload with the muzzle pointed at the berm downrange. Skyward reloads are prohibited at our range (except for revolver shooters).
4) You must be able to draw and holster one-handed. If you use a regular shirt as concealment, you may use your weak hand to pull the shirt up, BUT your weak hand may not go anywhere near the gun until the gun is out of the holster and the muzzle pointed downrange. Same thing for re-holstering. It is important to have a good holster so your weak hand is never needed. Practice holstering slowly...you are not on the clock.

DRY FIRE PRACTICE: Please clear your gun, check it twice, and put all ammo away, empty two mags. You can use snapcaps if you like. Then dry-fire practice these skills at least 20 times until you can do them proficiently and without reverting to old habits.

There is a new rulebook. Please make sure you know the rules: http://members.idpa.com/Content/Rules/x2gukat1.wyt.pdf

Some new rules:
- Each hit on a non-threat is worth 5 seconds;
- Dropping a magazine with bullets when not doing a reload is a penalty;
- You may do a reload while moving behind cover, but you may never do a reload or cross an opening with an empty gun;
- In some cases you may do a reload while moving with a visible target that has been engaged. In other cases you may not. Read the rulebook.
- More non-threats may be used;
- A standards stage may use foot fault lines or boards;
- There is only one revolver division, a new Compact Concealed Pistol division, and BUG division in addition to SSP, ESP and CDP;
- Intentionally failing to take a final shot on a final target to avoid the reload time is an automatic FTDR;
- I am sorry, but no AIWB holsters are allowed for IDPA, even NFS.

NOTE: This is not the forum to debate these rules. Rules debates belong in the IDPA subforum.

Thanks,
Cody Claxton

Glad to head the permanent match date. I will be adding it to my calendar. Had a blast (no pun intended) yesterday at Peacemaker, nice small group and my friend had a great time. He had never shot IDPA before. This month is sadly a wash for me, but I expect to be a normal fixture at both of these matches. Thanks for bringing something within NoVA.

As for setup up/tare down, build - count me in. Not a IDPA RSO, so cannot really help there. I can always help with scoring though ;)

For some reason I had to manually open the match registration.
I have to approve each shooter. Once approved, you may squad.

So can you shot the match without being an IDPA member? Kind of like a "test drive" to see if you like it? If so the IDPA member number is a required field. How do you get around it?

Anyone may shoot the match without being an IDPA member for the first match. After that you are expected to join.
Just enter in TBD or NEW SHOOTER or something like that.

The March 24 IDPA Match is now full with one person waitlisted. Four shooters need to squad using the Practiscore site. If you want to shoot the match, please register as a waitlist registration. It is very likely we will have 2-4 people drop out and I will need waitlisters.

Please arrive at the range at least 20 minutes before so you can pay your fee and get your gear ready. I expect you to be ready to shoot at the top of the hour. If you arrive hot, please speak up and make sure we unload you before the match.

I will try and post the designs before the match, but no promises.

Facebook page coming soon.

Thanks,
Cody

I have one slot available for the 9PM squad.
I have been working my way through the waitlist but the hour is getting late.
If you are on the waitlist and want the shooting slot at 9PM, please PM me.

The stages are done.
It's about 62 rounds if you don't take makeup shots.
There are five stages. You will need to top-off two times in STage #1 as there are three strings.

I will run the match in the following manner:
1) the squad will get on one line and load and make ready together.
2) We will then run the first shooter on stage 1, 2nd shooter on stage 2, etc., until all 5 shooters have shot 5 stages. After you shoot your stage, reload your mags.
3) We will then score the stages. It is the responsibility of the shooter to paste the array. After you have pasted you may take another quick look at the next stage you are going to shoot.
4) Each shooter will rotate to the next stage. Stage 5 shooter will shoot Stage 1. Stage 5 shooters will need to be quick on the mag reloading.
5) We will then repeat the process until all 5 shooters have shot 5 stages.

This method saves time on scoring and pasting.

Please be ON TIME for the match. That means be on the range and ready for the briefing at the top of the hour, not five minutes after.

There will be a quiz on the safety rules...know them.

Everyone seemed to have a good time as well.

Thanks for putting on an excellent match. I thought you guys did a great job of setting up and running stages that were fun, but still quick enough to reset so that the squads ran on time.

Thanks to Cody and the crew for a great match. I had more fun than should be possible on a Tuesday evening. The stage design presented some interesting and realistic challenges and the match was very organized and well run. Looks like its time for an IDPA membership!

You know you had a great time when the match was fun despite gathering penalties left and right. The stages were light and airy and figuring out the barrels as cover was a novelty that made things interesting. I have pretty good footage from the match which I will try to get up as soon as possible (this weekend at the latest). Excited to have shot my first IDPA match. Thank you Cody for organizing everything.

Thanks for the excellent 3 camera video showing exactly how good cover is used. By walking the stage ahead of time and making sure you know how far to step for each target you can take a lot of time off the stage.

Excellent job.
