The folks at Armored Mobility asked us to test a new product of theirs, an armored citation clipboard.

It is approximately the same height and width as a standard citation book and weighs about 2.7 lbs, with a handle on the back to allow easy grasping of the device. In addition to its other uses, the device makes a handy field expedient impact tool.

In our testing, we fired the following rounds from a distance of three feet:

9 mm M882 ball from G17
9 mm Win 127 gr +P+ from G17
.357 Mag Rem 125 gr JHP from 4” 686
.44 Mag Fed 240 gr JHP from 16” 1894
12 ga Fed 00 buckshot from 18” 870

All of the threats were stopped by the AMI citation holder.

Three things come to mind. 1) Good idea. 2) Our citations are legal pad size...offered in larger variant? 3) Seeing that its made to absorb rounds is it cost prohibitive (read: how much it it and is it worth the money)? Granted it may save your life but just curious.

Not being up to full speed on Police tactics, wouldn't you be tossing the clipboard in order to free up both hands if taking fire?
I can see it being useful while approaching the car, maybe as crotch armor.
I can see it being useful as an impact weapon.
But I think that when the bullets start flying you'd be better off using both hands for shooting.
I've seen it time and time again in FoF courses where people hold onto stuff in their hands while trying to fight, with the resulting poor performance.
And that was useless crap like shopping bags.
I can see an officer holding on to it like a security blanket when they'd be better off using both hands to shoot.
Just my thoughts...
Maybe Southnarc can set me straight?

While the chest is covered with soft armor, in close range unanticipated lethal force encounters, many officers are shot through the hands into the face (ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEpUtoUzE4U). This device is intended to be used at close range to protect the face while drawing and firing. During our trial, it seemed to work very well; think of it as a modern day buckler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckler).

I know AMI has made some other interesting unlisted products for various organizations, including a legal pad size clipboard made of Dyneema that provides lightweight ballistic protection. The guy we have worked with is Ryan O'Neil; you might contact him and discuss your needs: http://www.armoredmobility.com/contact.php.

AMI has sent me an email stating the price will be $95--quite reasonable given how effective it is...
