So I just started watching this series on Amazon Prime and I have to say it's very good. Quite interesting seeing the Cold War through the opponent's eyes. Plus having Keri Russell as leading actress is always a good thing.

I watched the first few episodes and really thought they were well-written and -acted.

It's not exactly the early '80s I remember, but that might have something to do with my early '80s having more D&D and Mork & Mindy. :o

Having been born in '88, I literally have no memory of the 80s though I kinda recall my dad acting like it was a big deal when the last of the Berlin Wall came down. Now that I'm old enough to understand, I actually find the Cold War equal parts fascinating and terrifying. Makes me glad I didn't have to grow up with it though looking at the world today, having some level of predictability would be nice.

I don't watch much TV programming, but this series is excellent. I find the tension between the husband and wife spies to be as interesting as the tactics they undertake to forward their mission, as the wife is clearly far more deeply committed to the effort than he.

They can only do so much, I imagine.

On the other hand, some of the disguises for the husband make him look exactly like an early 80s pornstar.

Oh, and I remember EST

I do remember the 80s. Pretty good visual rendition of the time, though the inevitable weakness is that the writers use today's phrasing, not what was current then.

I'm also a big fan of the series although I've missed all 3 episodes of this season.

I was such an active participant in the '80s that I frankly don't remember much of them.

It's become one of my favorite shows. Having served in the '80's it reminds me how much I miss the clarity of the Cold War.

I watched it a couple of times, but I kept wondering where they get their fleet of work cars, where they change into their disguises, and why no one reports them to children's services for being absentee parents. The tradecraft is fun to watch, but the rest of it's a soap opera.

As I remember the early '80's, they were more hopeful than the Carter years. After all, we beat the Russkies at hockey. Merica!

It is one of my favorite shows as it was really my era. This season has really ramped up the intensity. Like many of these series, I think the are on the peak right now and hopefully will wind it down nicely rather than going an extra season or two of full retard.

I thought I was the only one. Don't misunderstand me. I know that we came close to global thermonuclear war several times. But we knew who the enemy was, and the enemy wasn't bat-scat crazy. We could count on them to act in their own best interest. There were rules that both sides followed.
The guys we're dealing with now would happily blow up the world, including themselves, as long as they can go out screaming jihad!

Rules?

Like state sponsored terrorism against your own citizens, framing the communists to scare the population into reelecting you?

Yeah. The good'ole days.

;)

I would also submit that the seeming simplicity of the time wasnt the actual situation, but rather a deleterious result of our one-tracked narrow-mindedness....which is how we got blindsided with our Iranian ally being overthrown. And the various embassy bombings. And the first WTC attack. And the USS Cole. And 9/11.

We are in the whole mess we are in today because of our one tracked narrow mindedness in thinking the Soviets were our only enemy, only problem. I wouldnt consider that a good thing.

There was an exposed buttocks scene this week involving Kerri Russell, a semi-religious experience.

Just started the show this week. It's pretty well written. Some of the stuff like the clothing and language is not accurate, but some of the stuff, like being gone from your kids with no explanation, wouldn't cause people to bat an eyebrow like it would today.

I am sure you are joking, though it would be a good platform.

I really enjoy the fact that they hire actual Russian speaking actors to play those Russian speaking characters. They even use period terminology, which is awesome.

I've really I noted the show. However, this season's finale was not up to the high standards that the show has set to date.

Did you expect a mayhem of action? Most people did.

I expected there to be a pretty serious bit of buildup towards the next season.

You are talking about Arkady Ivanovich Zotov or Oleg Burov?

Having been born behind the Iron Curtain while it was still in official existence and growing up during the Reagan years, it brought back some "good" memories.

Where at, if you don't mind me asking? I had family in the BRD and DDR.

I'm sorry, sarcasm apparently does not translate well on your screen. I thought the quotes were sufficient.
