We have three and four inch threads, so how about moving it up to five?

I'll start with a Colt Amy Special .38, manufactured in 1919.

Smith & Wesson Model 544 Texas Wagon Train Commemorative. Five-inch N-frame in .44-40; 4782 manufactured in 1986 to commemorate the Texas Sesquicentennial. One of my favorite revolvers; I've sat on a friend's porch in Terlingua and used it to shoot at rocks rocks out around a hundred yards. Good times, good times.

My late Dad's 5-in. Pre-27 he bought after getting out of AF briefly in '52 after first combat tour in Korea, along w a new Colt's .38 Super, Model 70 .270 and Model 12 12 ga. At some high-end gun store in San Francisco. He did roofing for a couple months then decided he'd rather face death than keep roofing.

On his second tour he was in same outfit inserting and exfiltrating assets for another brand-new service called the CIA into North Korea and China. Because of the duties he had a "go out hard" philosophy which included, judo lessons in Japan and carrying the "Three-Five-Seven", the .38 Super, a Grease Gun and an M2 Carbine in his flight kit.

It has honest wear and patina, hate the Pachmayr Grippers he put on it; hoping to find the Magnas somewhere in the house and put a T- grip on there with them.

This was a couple years ago, when I was hoping to show it to a Tenn. Whitetail.

If I'm doing any serious shooting the goodyears get installed. I'm not particularly recoil sensitive but work induced carpal tunnel prevents me from enjoying much shooting with wood grips in any caliber larger than .32 Magnum.

I'm out of this thread, I'll have to wait for the 6" thread and 8" thread. :-)

My dad had one of those. It was gorgeous, with years of wear and very little blue left. I learned to shoot on that and a 4" Kit Gun. About 20 years ago, he sent it back to S&W and had them replace the 5" barrel with a 4" barrel and refinish it. I'm still sad about it.

Very nice. Who cut the 29 custom ? I have a 6" 624 I was thinking of converting to 5". I have a 5" pre 27 and 627 and find it the most practical barrel length for an N frame.

Also what grips are on the 29 classic DX ? Herretts ?

SDM Fabricating cut down the 8&3/8 8ths" 29-2 to 5"s, and installed an FSB that accepts the DX/Weigand interchangeable front sights. Then they narrowed the target trigger and polished out the serrations. It's very smooth for DA shooting.

The DX grips were from a guy in south eastern Idaho, I ordered them 90% shaped, then finished the final shape before applying what's essentially a spar varnish to them. This finish was chosen over traditional finishes due to me using my guns in bad winter weather frequently.

In regards to Herretts, they are a local company and a few of my guns wear their Ropers, including a couple of 4" 29/629s. I tried the Jordan troopers, but traded them off as they were just too big for DA shooting. My next set will likely be a set of detective stocks from them. Very nice folks at Herretts.

The non DX Classic on the bottom wears a set of eagle classics, which are actually very nicely shaped grips and very fair price wise.

Some great pictures. I really like the 5" 27's, I had one long ago and miss it.

I have a 6 1/2" 24 barrel I want to have cut to 5" and fit to a 29. It will make a nice carry gun for the hills.

Have some pics of a 1926 3rd hand ejector 44 spl, but with the old computer I'm stuck using for now, I cant get into photobucket.

I'm curious, whats the advantage supposed to be with smooth triggers on DA revolvers? I never cared for them and have swapped out several smooths for grooved.

In my experience and preference, the smooth triggers are much, much more pleasant on the trigger finger when shooting double action, especially when going through a high round count in a relatively short period of time, for instance 200 rounds in a match.

Interesting. I guess it never bothered me in that way. It wasnt unusual to shoot 500-1000 rds through the K-22 each time I'd take it out as a kid and later. The smooth ones have felt slick and unsecure to me if my hands were sweaty, and I worried theyd be really slick if the hands were bloody. I've cleaned up sharp edges on them, but like the face crisply grooved.

I've never had an issue with my finger slipping off the trigger with my hands being sweaty, which is a fairly common occurance here in Georgia. :-). The sweaty hands issue is why I gave up on smooth grips for most all of my carry guns, the one exception being a 3" model 30-1 with a set of smooth boot grips.

I havent had my finger slip off the trigger, but it feels squirrely to me, just being slick, and I worried it could slip off. I cant say I have much experience with the smooth triggers, because I got rid of them as quickly as I could when I bought a gun with one on it.

I guess its personal preference.

BTW, I have a smooth stainless or hard chromed trigger (or whatever Smith does to triggers on stainless guns) I'd happily trade for a grooved carbon or stainless Smith trigger. I replaced the one in the gun as soon as I could locate one.

Malamute,

I've long considered the exact same project, taking a 24/624 barrel, cutting to 5"s and putting it on a 29.

Essentially you'd end up with a 5" mountain gun. Sounds slick as snake snot to me.

I've been thinking on this. It obviously bothers many people, but never has me, even when a kid. I have seen some edges that were sharp, I stone them off at the edges, both sides and front if theres any hint of sharpness. The grooves have never bothered me in the least, I like them. I occured to me that I started shooting bows a LOT about when I started shooting much, and I mostly shot bows bare handed (no tab or glove) a couple hours a day for quite a while. I also do carpentry and construction work, my hands may be tougher than average. The whole smooth trigger thing seems fairly new (geologically speaking). I dont recall any of the old timers like Keith, McGivern, Jordan, or others having the grooves polished off. I wonder if its that fewer people do hard hands on work in recent times?

What you saw was likely the hammer block. It works opposite of the way a transfer bar does. When uncocked, it raises into position to block hammer movement if dropped on the hammer.

Since Jim Stroh (Alpha Precision) has called it quits, one place you might consider is Hamilton Bowen. He offers two options; designated SW300 & SW301.

This firearm is from the personal collection of Hank WIlliams Jr. Smith & Wesson model 27-2 with a 5 inch barrel, adjustable rear sight, wooden grips, engraved barrel & frame and include the Smith & Wesson factory letter and wooden display case.

Funny shit! You should show her the thread on the new style forward grip. See what she's got to say about that.

Yeah. I've been looking online at grip options. Lett went out of business a few years ago. I have a 4" GP I bought in the late 80s. Ruger does still sell a grip like the older ones, I might try that.

I have an '89 vintage GP100. I sent it in to Ruger a couple years ago and they noticed the grip panels were cracked so they gave me a brand new set of the Wiley Clapp grips, basically a fancy Lett style and the texture adds a bit more traction. They also let you get a little higher on the gun than the Houge grip.

S&W 24-3 .44 Special cut to 5". Gun was one of several nice older Smiths which came into my local Cabelas as part of an estate.

The gun had endfloat which caused the cylinder to bind when loaded. It has now been repaired. The target below is the first six rounds of Blackhills 210 grain SWC double action at 15 yards.

The 5 inch barrel and that front sight look perfect.

I have a 6 inch 28-2 that I'd like to get the same done.
May I ask who did the work?

And the stocks are beautiful.

I have no idea. It came into Cabelas that way as part of an estate collection. My gunsmith only corrected the end float.

Did you live there when you could cross over to Lajitas Mexico?

You could wander across the river, yes. Not that there was very much to see back in the early 1980's. The leaky wood ferry at Boquillas was more popular with the touristas.

About 40-50 of us lived on the US side full-time.

A buddy had a sign on his porch for the "winter Texans". "Welcome to Texas. Now get the hell out." He was not with the tourism office or Chamber of Commerce. But he loved to watch Clay Henry, the beer-drinking goat at the Trading Post.

You'd get groceries from the Study Butte Store, and once a week we'd carpool into Alpine with ice chests. That was 120 miles - each way. If you got hurt bad, the DPS helicopter would fly you into Midland. It took about two hours for your body to arrive. Not bad-mouthing the DPS, just pointing out that it was a 250-mile ride each way. You were cautious, and smart people kept that in mind. John at Terlingua Medics was good, but he was not a trauma surgeon.

I lived in an old adobe house upstream from the Trading Post. I could hit a 3 iron from my front door, and the ball would land in Mexico.

I'm not a particularly good golfer, by the way.

I took folks on rafting trips through all three canyons, and backpacking trips all over the Park. I grew up in that part of the world, and understand the desert. Probably why the military sent me to jungles most of my enlistment.

I love that part of Texas. LOVE IT. Wish I could have experienced it back in the day. Back in October I went to Ojinaga, but I bet it would have been more fun in the 80s.

Yes, Ojinaga was certainly rowdy back then.

The area has definitely changed. In some ways good, in some ways bad.

My ancestors settled there back in the 1930's. Some are still buried there.

I do not know how safe it is now, so it's hard for me to answer that. It was a bit of a risky venture then.

Knowing what I know now, I would not have gone then.

So today after work I stopped in my LGS. I’m on a bit of a red dot pistol kick and I found a good deal on a used P320X compact with a Leupold DPP. I put it on layaway but decided to poke around a little more. Suffice to say I switched my layaway when I found this:

43912

5 inch Colt new service 45 ACP/ 45AutovRim with a nice action job. Colt website dates it to 1919. Someone installed a ramp front sight a Smith and Wesson Adjustable rear sight and stippled the top strap.

It had this Mark on the left side of the frame just under the rear sight .

43913

I’m assuming that is the Smith that did the work. Anyone recognize that Mark?

Well, that is not a gunsmith’s mark.

The "monogram" is that of Army Major (later Colonel) Gilbert H. Stuart, an Ordnance Inspector who retired as a Brigadier General.

General Stuart is on the right in the photo below.

My favorite .44 Mag, a 29-2.

Started as an 8 &3/8ths"

Here it is from the trip I picked it up. I came back and camped on the Pahsimeroi Valley and defended myself from some killer bunnies.

Tossed some ground squirrels into the air that were hiding behind their dirt mounds..

I sent it to SDM. They cut it to 5"s, narrowed the target trigger and removed the serrations. It was set up for Classic/DX type removable front sights. and given an action tune. Love this gun. If I ever had to choose just one .44, this would be the one for certain.
