My old 29. It has quite a few miles on it, with a lot of finish wear, but I love it.

I'd say that one has seen some use! As much as I like shiny guns and pretty stocks there's nothing cooler than one that's been well used.

I bought it new in about '82. I shot a deer, several coyotes, some squirrels, and quite a lot of bunnies and jacks with it. Its the one I carry most when in the mountains where the bears live.

I'm trying to beat my brother out of his 6" M29. He's not budging....

A 4" Model 29 is on my list of must haves. They don't seem to be getting any cheaper.

Sadly, not five minutes ago I sold my 6.5 inch 29 to my neighbor. Arthritis makes it a no go for me anymore.

Sorry to hear about selling your 29. I tend to shoot mostly medium powered loads, but that still may not work for you. 44 spls are pretty mild also, though I seem to shoot the 1000 fps medium power loads most.

I've been waffling on getting a 4" .44 Mag as a woods totin' gun for a year now. I should go buy a blued Model 29 right now, and start carrying it immediately so it could look that cool before I died.

Fender and Gibson made a fortune making guitars that were "reliced." I wonder if there's money in doing the same thing with guns.

The only revolver I own at this point. 686 original no dash. The only modifications are; converted to DAO; Wolf Springs and since this picture was taken I changed the rear sight blade to a Weigand's to clean up the sight picture for these aging eyes.

The only repairs I have had to do were after umpteen thousands of rounds the bolt and cylinder center pin were so worn where they come together that the center pin was no longer pushed the bolt back far enough and the bolt was interfering with the back of the hammer and the bolt was no longer pushing the center pin far enough forward to cleanly release the cylinder. Once I found the parts and replaced them everything's back to being honky dory.

This gun has seem marginal amounts of .357 ammunition, mainly it was either standard velocity .38 or over last 5 years .38 +p reloads for IDPA 125 power factor.

I had the sister gun to this in 6" with a pinned front sight that was set up for a neck hold at 50 yards on a B-27 for PPC. About 12 years ago things were tight and my gun collection was reduced to shooters only. Since I hadn't really shot the gun since shooting PPC in the early 80's the 6" was part of the purge. Also at the time went a pristine fitted Remington mdl 1100 trap, and my father original edition Colt Gold Cup 1911. I have regretted that purge over the last few years. :(

My current duty gun, a Mdl 10-5 our oldest weapon in inventory. I tell my students/personnel that I carry it because if I can max out the Q course with this old hunk of junk they certainly should be able to qualify with all those newer guns. Actually the main reason I carry it is because of my aging eyes the larger front sight on a pencil barrel is easier to pick up at speed compared to the smaller ramps on the heavy barrel model 10's, 64's, and 65's.

That's the new style Safariland Model 200 Top Gun holster. Actually I preferred the older styles but we were short of holsters and as I have multiple times in my career gave mine out. What can I say, I am a S&W Safariland Snob.

At some point our Denver office had it refinished I have no idea what was used.

The grips are Smith factory smooth targets, but I don't recall what wood. I don't think Walnut, maybe Goncala Alves, or Rosewood? I shortened them on the bottom, rounded the edges front and rear, and dished out a bit behind the trigger guard.

I'm liking this 4" 24 quite a lot recently also. I did a similar butcher job on the grips. I think the wood is Walnut on this one. It also has super high tech orange finger nail paint on the front sight, since it didn't come with the factory red ramp front sight.

.32 Hand Ejector First Model (before Smiths had an ejector thumbpiece; the cylinder released by pulling forward on the ejector rod. Also, the cylinder stop is in the topstrap and actuated by the hammer nose.)
.38 Double Action Perfected Model (Top-Break that had both the "t-latch" on top, and a regular Hand Ejector style thumb latch. Both had to be released to open the gun.)

My competition gun. This is what I am doing most of my shooting and dry practice with these days. I actually love the heck out of this thing until I see the lock hole above the cylinder release and it makes me sad to see wear its soul leaks out. Out of the box stock with simply a dry practice trigger job (the best kind) and the C&S fiber optic front sight and the Nill grips.

I bought it in 1985. It is a factory gun that started with a 2.5 inch barrel and round butt. The forcing cone split after shooting it some. A friend who was an S&W armorer sent it to the factory to rebarrel and it came back with the 4 inch tube. It's the first handgun I ever bought.

While I don't own the grips I played with a MC at the local pawn shop. For my average sized mitts I find there to be waaay too much thickness at the backstrap. So much so it affects how much finger I get on the trigger. That hurts my ability run the trigger well.

They do not fit the frame as well as I would expect for the price, but overall I like the feel. You can see near the bottom of the trigger guard where the frame is mismatched a bit. There is also a gap at the top near the hammer. I'm thinking about doing some chisel and sandpaper work to improve the fit.

I'm not sure I would spend the $90 retail price tag on them.

Regarding grip size, they fit me well. I don't know how I would measure my hand for a reference, but I can just barely palm a men's basketball if that gives any indication.

Grandfather's duty side arm (Model 19) and holster when he worked as a park ranger for the NFS, passed down to me a couple years ago. I remember it having a finish similar to Malamuts when my grandfather had it, but my uncle thinks he's a gunsmith and tried to re blue it. I'll never get that good worn look back, so thinking of sending it to Smith for a factory re blue.

Smith & Wesson Model 21-4 Thunder Ranch Special. Bought new back in '04 or '05 when they first hit the market. I have the wood-and-glass display case, too. At least, I think that's what's in the cardboard box that came with the gun; I've never opened it to find out.

I cannot believe that some marketing genius at Smith took what was an ideal formula for a big-bore carry revolver, a round-butt taper-barrel N-frame M&P, and fruited it up with that gold leaf logo and a "display case". Mine got shoved into a kydex holster the day it came out of the box.

Robinson
12-06-2014, 03:24 PM
If I remember, Clint Smith didn't really think the gold logo was a great idea either but was just happy S&W had listened and come out with a big-bore fixed sight 4" revolver in blued steel. I think they have sold some 21s without the logo too. Not long after they released the model shown in the pic, they also introduced a .45ACP gun in the square butt configuration -- I had one of those and it was pretty sweet.

Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector Third Model, circa 1931. Ugly renickel job; this is another one I'll be paying to have fixed up at some point, although it's a decent shooter as it sits. Less than 5,000 were made, most of which went to Wolf & Klar in Fort Worth, TX. When Clint Smith talked S&W into reintroducing a big-bore fighting sixgun, this is the gun he wanted reintroduced.

The thing spit powder so I sent it to Ruger to get fixed. Sent it back with a new barrel and a set of Wiley Clapp grips.

That old gun is a real dog. It was abused badly in its past. Calling it a beater is being kind. I wished I knew its history. When I got it, it shot terrible. Horrible accuracy. I studied it and realized the holster wear on the muzzle cut into the crown. I recrowned it and shazzam, wonderful accuracy even though its a worn out old gun. One day my kids are gonna wonder why their dad keep that old wore out revolver .

IPSC 1980's is like street stuff now. Someday, some retired cop is going to be all happy to find one of the new speed "holster" things they are using now that will fit his plasma gun in the 40 watt range. Many of the guys I am shooting with now are running a thing that looks like a bar with a little protrusion on the bottom for the muzzle. I sort of hit a good treasure trove at the vacation house. Apparently, revolvers are sort of dogs here and under priced. My kid was having a tough time with the recoil of her 3" 65, so it justified getting the 18 for a good revolver trainer. When I was checking prices, I realized that the 18 was a steal. Knowing the Nills are sitting at home for it is really adding to the cool factor. I was never into .22's, but now I get why these get folks so excited. Neat guns .

When I went through the academy in 98, we had three options for holsters. 070, 295, and the 6280. I had a 295 and after a year I went with a 070.

We had a guy get mobbed in one of the projects. He was 325lbs+ and had to lay down and completely cover his holstered firearm. After the melee was over, his 070 was being held to his belt via the bottom hex screw.

Because of this thread I had to get myself a 4" revolver. I found a S&W 28-2 for a price I could live with and bought a set of VZ grips during one of there sales. I admit I'm not much of revolver know it all and thought this was a square butt. I selected the square butt VZ grips specifically. Well tonight I tried to install them and things aren't working. I have to clean the pistol up a bit anyway because there was the surface rust and crud under the original grips when I took them off.

Should be in October. Just need to confirm the exact weekend to get the range.

The VZ grips are G10, which unlike wood or rubber has no give to it, so they tend to be a very tight fit. What I like about the VZ's is that I can use the dremel or some sand paper to get them to fit just perfect to my hand if there is a part that is uncomfortable.

I really liked the 070 and also had the magic front site appear in front of me a few times. My biggest hang up is that with my dry fire schedule they only lasted about a year before the plastic reinforcement in the thumb break would crack and flex to much to reliably unsnap. Of course I have also worn out the spring on three SLS hoods but at least with those I don't have to replace the whole holster.

I'm pretty happy with the ALS only system now.

That really is a beautiful gun. I've seen some Smythons that kinda made my eyes hurt. That one looks like it rolled out of the factory that way.

It is why I "had" to have it. Many of the early Smythons, and Cougers were really built to give a competitive edge in PPC type service matches. In SoCal they then became sort of a status thing among "serious gun guys". Many of hose were built by Bill Davis and some of the premier PPC gun builders and were not cheap. The goal was performance first, but they were built right, but the goal was performance, not looks. Like many things, cops who are typically cheap, and others wanted guns like these and pretty soon bubba versions were showing up and were crap. The gun I got is an example of what happens when a highly regarded world class gunsmith builds one and the goal is both performance AND a finished look. It is truly a thing of beauty.

I keep going back and re-looking at it. Does the Python barrel resist the forcing cone cracking that Model 19's otherwise sometimes had? If so, S&W ought to buy Colt, have their custom shop make those things new (with a good action job) and re-invigorate the high-end revolver market. It's not only a beautiful gun, it is a great idea.

I agree. No soul. Like plastic guns (and I like the utility of plastic guns). I've been looking at a 686 3" pistol but just can't pull the trigger (no pun intended). Not only is there a lock, but there is something about blued guns that stainless just doesn't capture.

A blue K frame magnum with a better barrel/forcing cone is such a great idea.

I'm undecided as of yet. I'm planning to get it lettered by S&W because of it's age. While I'm not into collecting for collecting's sake, it might be worth more unmolested. I've already found out the grips are worth more than I paid for the gun.

Lock up and end shake are easy.

Unload, then triple check to make sure it didn't magically reload itself.
Close the cylinder, cock the revolver with the hammer.
Holding the butt with one hand and the cylinder with the other, first attempt to rotate the cylinder. There should be a little play but not excessive.
Then attempt to move the cylinder back and forth between the recoil shield and the forcing cone. If there's more than a couple thousandths of movement you have an endshake issue.
Repeat with the other five cylinders.

Timing is a bit more involved in that you need a properly sized dowel that will fit snugly in the muzzle and slide the length of the bore and into the cylinder.
Once again with the pistol cocked in single action, slide the dowel down the bore, through the forcing cone and into the cylinder. If the dowel is stopped by one edge of the cylinder, you have a timing issue.

An alternative is to shine a light through the cylinder to forcing cone gap and use the Mark 1, Mod 2 eyeball to see if you can see part of the cylinder while looking down the bore. It's field expedient but not nearly as accurate as the dowel method.
Once again repeat with the other five cylinders.

I don't know of a definitive guide for checking. The Kuhnhausen manual is often cited, but is not a how to guide by any stretch of the imagination.

timing: put empty brass in all six chambers. Pull trigger, put a little drag on the cylinder with your offhand thumb. The cylinder stop should lock into the cylinder before the hammer falls. 3/4 is I think considered ideal. If you can make the hammer fall and THEN rotate the cylinder into position the timing needs to be fixed. Pre-CNC revolvers had the extractor fitted to the cylinders individually. I've never done this. It sounds like considerable effort. Post CNC guns the extractor is interchangeable. Only the hand needs to be fitted, AFAIK. Your gun is...pre CNC. By a...couple years. Parts will be difficult to find, I think.

lockup: the cylinder should rotate "a bit". The side to side play should be minimal. I don't know if there's a hard metric for this. "Not a lot". Endshake is .002" max in all six positions between the cylinder face and the barrel. The yoke shouldn't wiggle on the fat part at the bottom when the cylinder is closed. Both have bearings (so a little can be taken care of without major surgery if it does this.

I think this is spot on for a thorough check. I admit I'm lazy about this part. Unfortunately, if the cylinder stop locks in property it's possible (maybe likely?) that this isn't a timing issue as much as it's a "the cylinder wasn't machined correctly" issue. Timing is bad. Chambers not drilled in the right place is even worse.

SLG

... Timing is bad. Chambers not drilled in the right place is even worse.

True, but it is pretty common to find guns that don't "see straight" from their chambers to the forcing cone. Not usually much of an issue, though it certainly can be if bad enough.

41magfan
01-21-2016, 10:38 AM
I wouldn't overthink this too much as service grade accuracy is readily achieved without perfect alignment and a tight fitted cylinder. Unless the cylinder has been line-bored correctly, every charge hole is likely going to be off just a little. But that's no big deal because a properly cut forcing cone will generally mitigate any slight misalignment and the gun will usually produce acceptable results unless a tightly fitted cylinder stop prevents a smidge of "wiggle" in the cylinder.

Much like a semi-auto pistol, a tightly fitted slide is just one piece of the puzzle in achieving mechanical accuracy.

Wheeler
01-21-2016, 05:17 PM
I neglected to include "a little play is acceptable..." My personal rule of thumb is if I can eyeball down the bore and see the edges of the chambers on the cylinder face I need to move on.

I managed to find one the other week and finally got over to my FFL to pick her up this afternoon. I'm super pleased. She's a touch dirty, but in excellent condition. I couldn't help myself and pulled off at a little BLM spot I know on the way home. Let's just say I'm a little twitterpated. ;)

They don't look nearly as pretty as the grips I had there before, but 250gr slugs departing the gun at 900fps with the Pachmayrs were not only not painful, but downright pleasant to shoot. While I agree that "goodyears" look downright ugly, when you actually fire the gun it's pretty tough to beat 'em, at least with a big bore revolver.

You may already be aware, but if the inside of the frame under the crane where the model number is (when cylinder is open) should be stamped with an "M". Copy of the recall info below.

Well, if "M" stands for modified, it certainly is modified--and gorgeous. Did Bowen put a .45 barrel on it? (And if so, where did they get one?)

Anyway, that is one heck of a revolver. My guess is that there are approximately zero others like it.

This one means a lot. I was very happy to have met the man, to listen to him tell tales of the old days on the NYPD, and hopefully learn a thing or two from him.

The gun has no connection, it just seemed the most Cirillo-esque blaster I own :)10042

My old 4" S&W 66 manufactured in '72. Carried for years, thousands of rounds of Magnum ammo finally wore it out. Had S&W rebuild it. The only original parts are the frame and side plate. A 4" 686 with 6 and 7 shot cylinders.

My 624 that I've begun to shoot and carry when woods-bumming. Very accurate and a pleasure to shoot with a 250 Keith and 8.0 Power Pistol. The load nudges 1K for velocity and is comfortable to shoot. Pressure is 17K PSI. This load was taken from an article by Brian Pearce in Handloader from a few years ago.

This gun is causing me real problems. It’s making me want more revolvers, something that hasn’t happened in many years. With the exception of J frames and a Ruger Vaq, it’s my new first revolver in 25 years.

26638

It’s a de-pandaed 69 with a plain serrated black Bowen Rough Country rear sight and a Protocall Design gold bead front. I have a set of Ahrends, but I’m not happy with the fit or shape. I’m still undecided whether I want to return them to Brownells or start carving, sanding and oiling. It rides in a Lobo enhanced pancake with hammer shield.

Now I want a bunch of fairly modest 4” stuff that I either used to have or always wanted:

* 619
* 681 modified to RB
* 66
* 28
* Trooper Mk III
* next to last model Police Positive Special (the one with the partial ejector rod shroud)
* last model Police Positive Special (the one with the full length underlug)
* 10 with a Bomar “cover up” winged rib, my first PPC gun was one of these and I foolishly let it go many years ago.

I’ve always wanted a 58, but that’s because I like the idea of a supersized 10HB. If it was in something other than .41 Magnum, I would choke down the price and find one. In .41, not so much.

I’d also love a 4” Diamondback, I had a 6” years ago but the prices on these will probably keep it out of reach. I still have my DB’s target stocks tucked away, they would look great on a Police Positive if they fit - D frame gripframes are mystery to me.

I shot highpower and bullseye in high school, and my faculty adviser recruited me to shoot PPC with his group after I graduated. The shooters were about 75% LE, but they allowed enthusiastic civs to shoot, too. I couldn’t afford much, so I bought another competitor’s old backup guns. It was the best thing I could have ever done - it was silly accurate with WCs and had a great trigger. I’d love to recreate it, but I’ve had zero luck finding a Bomar cover-up rib in a few years of casual looking.

Thanks for all the likes. As to the engraving, don't know. Bought the gun from a gentleman who said he had the weapon for a long time, but didn't know who did the engraving on the Smith. He added the Ivories in the 1970s. Usually show guns like that one doesn't shoot so well, but this one single action is "dead nuts" accurate. It's accurate DA but it is a bit stiff and the sideplate has never been removed for action work. I will shoot the DA into smoothness.

I’m sure the prior owner had the gun a long time but 24-3 and 624 were not produced until the 1980’s, largely as a result of a letter writing campaign by fans of the .44 special, foremost among them, the late Charles “Skeeter” Skelton.

Occasionally you run across one of these built on a Model 13, so it's a 357 Magnum. It's hard to imagine a better choice for hunting deer in the brush, even better if the previous owner went to a 6" barrel and kept the factory cylinder.
