So, the State of Georgia DNR operates some rather nice free to the public open air ranges. The one caveat is that you have to bring your own target stands. The main stipulation is that you're not supposed to have anything steel downrange that might be hit by a round.

Does anyone have suggestions on relatively inexpensive stands, preferably ones that can be easily broken down to fit in a normal passenger car?

ETA:

I'm fairly handy and have access to woodworking tools, so I'm not completely adverse to building something; on the other hand, I'm also lazy so something prefabbed is a plus as long as it's not exhorbitantly expensive.

I've built stand bases out of 2x4's and some with angle iron. The 2x4 bases are pretty cheap and can be assembled in about 30 minutes. Another alternative is to pick up some PVC Tees and pipe (I think 1.5" for using 1"x1.5" strips)

Here's a link rather than me try to give you a long winded, most likely confusing description of how to build.

I don't own any of these (https://www.targetbarn.com/newstore2.asp?CAT=TARGETS&SubCat=TARGETSTANDS)but they are really frickin' nice for the price if you were to buy them. I have homemade wood ones now that do the trick.

I made mine out of 2" PVC. With (4) 2' joints, four tees, and 4 caps all I needed to do was make 4 cuts and glue it together. They're H-shaped looking from above, if that makes sense. If I made them wider (too wide for an ipsc style cardboard) I could get that down to 3 cuts. They dont break down for a trunk but if you left the uprights unglued it might.

If you want to build some in wood-
You can take a 24" long piece of 4x4, rout out two slots for .75 x 2 slats, and drill two holes for spikes. The slats/furring strips can be had at home depot in 10' long bundles and they can cut them down to 5 before you leave. Then get a few 3/8" spikes.
These do not take up too much room in the vehicle and will stand up in any wind you want to shoot in.

We built a bunch of these: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c_eA_oM_PY&feature=youtube_gdata_player for my gun clubs montly rifle shoot last week and they worked great.

Dont glue'em together as they are friction fit, and if you happen to shoot one of the tubes, elbows, or T's you can simply slip it off and replace it with a new pvc part.

Once you get all of the pvc cut, it literally takes about 2 minutes max to assemble each stand.

I've got 16 of these I think.

I had a buddy weld up some similar to the others. Pretty cheap if you have access to welder and steel. That said, NEVCO Targets http://www.nevcotargets.com/catalog.html have a folding target that works pretty well and is cost effective. I have a couple of his create a targets and they have held up well. Plus he is local and a good guy to boot. Sponsors and donates a lot his stuff for various causes and matches. He sells through Brownells also I believe.
