I figure this section could use some life breathed into it, so by the (nonexistent) power vested in me, I declare this thread the Official pistol-forum.com Match Video Thread. WOOHOO!

I'll start, since I was just able to borrow a video camera for the first time :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdU8ObqBWQ4

This is also a thread for comments, critique, and criticism. I made about a million mistakes in my video, so it should be easy :D

Yup. I got 4th place on that stage, and the three guys who finished ahead of me all didn't do it. I really wonder how it would have turned out if I wasn't such an idiot with the briefcase. I should have ignored it on the way to the 2nd array and picked it up ONCE on the way to the third. Killed my time.

If you listen closely you can hear me say "That wasn't a good idea!" as I'm fumbling with it

Wow, you ravaged that Polish plate rack. Well done. Your movement and transitions both look superb, too.

Was it just me missing a transition or did you plug 3 shots into a more than a couple of the targets on the first vid? I thought I had an article by Rob Leatham bookmarked about when and when not to make up shots, but I seem to have lost it.

What are you shooting?

For me at least, I'm shooting a 9mm SIG P226ST with 124gr Federal AE ammo. Comp-Tac belt holster with mag pouches by them and Blackhawk... hodge podge FTW.

I'll play. This is my most recent Level II match - the Texas Limited.

Some notes: I'm pretty happy with my performance considering I hadn't really shot or practiced in the preceding three months due to an injury (you can see my left wrist is all taped up). I was not happy about my accuracy, which is normally my strong suit. I'm overgripping the crap out of the gun with my right hand in order to compensate for my left hand being near useless, causing my trigger control to go to shit. I knew my grip was shit in real time, but I just couldn't get my body to stop it and relax.

One big learning point was that when I spend too long in the sun and don't keep my blood sugar up my shooting goes to absolute hell. The video starts on Stage 1, but in reality I shot the match 8 - 4 on day 1, and 5 - 7 on day 2. On Stage 12, I was on deck and ready to go, when the shooter in front of me had a malfunction on one of the poppers and called for a calibration. It was a good thing he did, because the popper was all fouled up and needed to be fixed. Anyway, as a result I ended up waiting on deck for about 25 minutes - in the sun - while my blood sugar tanked. It took me a full three stages to recover. On stage 12, I went to the second position, shot a popper twice, then the paper once, then got confused, stopped, reassessed, and finished the stage. lol. At least I learned a valuable lesson from it.

Here's my Area 4 performance. I hate to play IFsc (actually I love it), but if my freaking Glock hadn't jammed on three stages I would have won the Area 4 Limited 10 championship. After speaking with noted bad-ass and former Glock shooter Carina Randolph, I think I narrowed the problem down to the mags not seating properly. For nationals, gone will be the magwell, and the extended basepads, that's for sure.

All in all I'm really happy with the way I shot. My accuracy was good, and I was seeing everything really well. I still need to prepare better in terms of nutrition and hydration, but like everything, it's all a work in process.

Here is my performance in the Production division at USPSA Nationals. I ended up finishing 2nd in A class, and 30th overall. I wasn't able to record some of the stages, but the ones I did record are shown here. The event was really fun, and I was reasonably happy with the results considering this was my first nationals, and by far the biggest match of my brief shooting career. The match also exposed some serious holes in my game, namely timing swingers. I have no problem getting hits on them as long as I don't have to worry too much about hitting anything between between the activator and the swinger itself. However, when timing is a factor (as it was on at least 7 of the 20 stages, I start to come undone. In the coming months I'm going to get out to West Texas to get some training from Kale Garretson and Jim Bodkin on this very issue, and I can't wait to see the improvement in my score next year.

Here's the match. Let me know what you think.

Here are stages 1 & 2 at the IDPA World Championship - note how badly I suck on those first 2 swingers. For some reason, I have an issue with being really timid when it comes to swinging targets, and it really showed on stage 2. It's funny because on day 2, I decided to just say the hell with it and go for it balls to the walls, and my scores on swinging targets improved dramatically. Which I'll have in later videos from the match.

Caleb,

How do they define tactical sequence? One on each then go back, or most serious threat first?

jetfire
09-27-2011, 02:52 PM
Tactical sequence means that each target in an array must be engaged with 1 round before you can shoot anything else. Hence the engagement order of 1-1-2-1-1 for a six shot COF. Donovan, if the gun had gone TU, the only equitable solution would have been a re-shoot since it's a stage equipment malfunction.

Congratulations on your first match!

Managing 100% accuracy on the El Pres on the clock at a match is pretty good...lots of people get freaked out by the timer and competition and go to pieces. You went at the speed you knew you could make the hits, which demonstrates good control.

As for breaking things down,

Draw:

You established a good master grip on the pistol before drawing it from the holster, which is exactly what you want to do because it's crucial to the control you're going to have on the gun for the string of fire. Your presentation from that point could stand to be sped up. Looking at your draw, it appears that your weak hand stayed more or less by your side as you were establishing your strong hand grip and drawing the pistol from the holster. Then your weak hand sort of chased after the gun as it was moved outward. You'd be amazed at just how much speed you can gain by making your left hand move to the centerline of your body as you go for the strong hand grip on the pistol. In other words, when you hear the buzzer both hands go to their proper place...strong hand on the pistol to establish your master grip, weak hand up to your sternum (assuming you don't have to clear a covering garment). I tend to anchor my hand with the back of my thumb against my sternum, fingers out. That way my left hand is waiting on my right to bring the gun in so I can establish my weak hand grip near my chest and then I have the rest of my arm's length of movement to refine my sight picture and work the trigger.

Grip:

On some of the shots it looks like you were re-adjusting your grip between shots. More than likely you're finding that you have a hard time keeping your weak hand anchored on the pistol under recoil, correct? It's a fairly common experience as the spot where lots of people anchor their weak hand on the grip of an M&P is kind of slick. You can do what I do and add a bit of skateboard tape to the part of the grip where your left hand makes contact and that will help you anchor the left hand down. Eventually you build a callous and no longer notice discomfort from the skateboard/safety tape. Another method that you may find helpful is to keep more flex in your elbows. If you bend your elbows in a bit you give yourself the ability to activate the pectoral muscles to help keep your hands together during recoil. To get the hang of this, I would suggest getting your normal grip on the pistol just as you would when you present to the target, then slowly bringing the gun back as you activate the pecs and see where in that range you're getting good assistance from the pecs. Generally the closer to the chest your gun is, the more pec activation you can use to keep your hands together and, as a bonus, control the recoil of the pistol. It takes a fair amount of deliberate practice to get to the point where it's second nature, but once you get there it tends to have a big payoff in terms of your ability to cope with recoil.

Reload:

You could eject the magazine as you are bringing the pistol back into your "workspace". In the vid it appears you sort of paused as you were ejecting the magazine. You can eject the mag while the gun is moving and while your left hand is going for the new magazine and that will save you some time. Orienting the gun so that the mag well is pointed more or less at your spare magazine will help the mag to fall free and make for a more natural insertion of the spare mag. Your actual insertion of the mag looked quite good...smooth and fast. You had a good index on the spare magazine and you looked the mag into the well nicely. Don't be afraid to seat the new magazine with more force.

Speed:

Your shot to shot speed looked to be dictated by what you were seeing on the sights...in other words, I noticed slight variations in the timing of the shots which seem to indicate that you were shooting based on what you were seeing as opposed to keeping a rhythm. That's extremely good, and is exactly what you want to do. When you get your grip sorted out to the point where your hands aren't separating under recoil, the gun will recoil more predictably and the sights will rise and fall more or less back into place. That will allow you to shoot faster using solid visual control based on what the sights are telling you. With time and practice you'll also build confidence in what you are seeing behind the gun. You'll get better at judging what is "good enough" to make the hit you want to make and that will let you speed up a bit as well. From the looks of that video you're taking great care to get a good sight picture and work the trigger to get hits most of the time...especially when you present on target and move from target to target...which is good. As you gain experience you'll build confidence in what you are seeing on the sights and you'll learn to properly manipulate the trigger a bit faster, with the end result being increased speed from the holster and from shot to shot.

I finally finished putting together the entire video footage from the 2011 IDPA World Championship. As I've said elsewhere, this was a tough match with a lot of very technical shots. The match was split up between two days, and on day 1 I was extremely timid with my stage approaches. I didn't attack the swingers with the sort of aggression I needed, which ended up costing me a lot of time and points. Day 2 went much better for me since I figured "screw it" and just attacked the stages with much more wild abandon. Big lesson learned: timidity won't win anything.

Was there a target that was supposed to be shot thrice, or did he just happen to need an extra shot on that last target that just happened to give him a more advantageous reload point?

I recently got through reading a long thread on an IDPA forum where people were discussing the round dumping rule, and whether and why they thought the rule should be kept or eliminated.

It was, interesting...

Though I am an outsider and have not shot IPDA, I came away from the discussion really disliking that rule. But then, with the limited time I have, if I shoot action pistol, it is going to be USPSA Limited so I can run my carry rig (appendix.) BTW, I did email the Tiger Teams and tell them I thought they should allow AIWB in IDPA.

Not holding breath on that one.

There was a disappearing target that Bob felt would be best engaged by firing three rounds at it. ;-)

There was a disappearing target that Bob felt would be best engaged by firing three rounds at it. ;-)

And that's precisely why that entire stupid rule should go away. I've seen SOs make totally subjective judgments -- often colored by personal preference for and against certain shooters -- and give huge 20-second penalties based on the concept that the SO, standing behind and to the side of the shooter, has a better ability to judge whether an extra shot was needed or not. I was present when the first FTDR for dumping was dished out at an IDPA Nationals and it was definitely one of the reasons my interest in the sport waned. Did that shooter dump a round? Yes. But so did almost everyone in the squad in the exact same place. But he was the only one who got called, because the SO also thought he had dumped a round in a previous stage. In other words, the competitor got dinged a match-ending 20s penalty not for something he did on the stage he was shooting, but because the SO was upset about something he had done earlier in the day.

That's crap.

And if they'd stop forcing everyone to top off at the beginning of every stage so everyone has an odd number of rounds and needs to dump one in a typical 2-on-everything course of fire, 90% of the problem would go away.

The round dumping rule is the rule that has been requested to be removed from the rulebook the most to the Tiger Teams. I have high hopes that we will see some real change on this particular issue, because it is a TERRIBLE rule.

Without drifting too much farther afield, I'll say that if the dumping and "run through the open without reloading your gun" rules went away and they allowed aiwb, I'd start shooting IDPA again in a heartbeat. Hell, I'd pay to get the NRA Range and the place where I teach in Culpeper both listed as official clubs.

Apparantly, there are a lot of IDPA guys that are reather sensitive when they are called out on their dumb unenforcable rules. I still find it funny that they showcase their 'World Champion' breaking their own rules and then then call it legit. There's no way he could have been behind cover with that tiny little movement either. I remember hearing in past matches that Rob Leatham couldn't do the same thing that EVERYONE else that ran the stage did because he had SO's just waiting to be able to give him some monster PE. Wouldn't need the rule if you would let people drop magazines with ammo still in them. Or how about a 'Carry' division and you shoot what you actually carry how you carry it. Holsters up front, mags loaded up, no reloads, whatever. And now, back to match videos. No one minds rifle matches do they?

Only because in Limited you need at least a 40 to make major. It makes major with a healthy margin in terms of power factor :D

"Concealed Carry Match"
H&K P2000Sk in a HighNoon Hideaway AIWB
Reload from left front pocket DeSantis Magpacker.

Keep in mind the penalties for misses and non-threats are significant in these matches, "failure to neutralize" is +10 seconds, non-threat is +20 seconds.
Also there are strict cover rules enforced by +3 sec. per shot penalties.
Accuracy trumps speed in a major way, especially shooting "minor" (A and C neutralizes, two C's does not) and proper use of cover is mandatory.

I missed catching my shirt on the first grab, but the press out looks good.
I shot this stage clean (I shot the entire match clean except for a single +10 sec. FTN) and won the doublestack division, 2nd overall in the match.

Having watched Jerry and Bob shoot at the most recent Nats, I can say that for the most part that attitude is gone at the national match level. Are there still silly procedurals? Certainly. Is the round dumping rule completely uneforceable? Absolutely. IDPA needs to change and needs to move forward, but like politics it's not something that's going to happen overnight.

It's been a few months since I've shot my last match. I got back into it today perhaps a bit too eagerly. I had all kinds of problems - I put a new extended slide catch lever on last week, and my grip kept pushing it up, causing premature lockback-ulation. Several mental and visual errors including one completely, unsalvageably bombed stage and several misses that never should have happened.

Oh well, I had fun. And I love the new camera. You can even see my beard!

I was at the same match as Donovan yesterday, but you can only see my beard in the 3rd person shots. I had an okay match; I popped a couple of no shoots on one stage because I tried to shoot it as fast with my strong hand as I did with both hands. Otherwise, not a terrible match. Footwork is still my big weakness, because even running a stock Glock trigger set up my trigger speed is pretty good.

It is; this was the first match where I had an opportunity to really wring the gun out under match pressures, and as you can see in the video my reloads were probably the best part of my match. The only reload I bobbled was on the stage where I shot the no-shoots; Stage 6. The video doesn't present the stages in the order we shot them, Stage 6 was our third stage, and was in the shade so my hands were pretty damn cold.

Nice shooting man.

If you'll take a small bit of unsolicited advice, I think you would benefit from being lower and more aggressive when shooting around the barricade. I don't think it hurt you this time, as it looked like each target got shot once, so any "push back" from the recoil was mitigated in the transition time. However, when shooting each target twice or more, you will find your sights track back to their original point a lot easier if you can be a bit lower and more aggressive.

This is one thing "mistake" I saw myself make a lot when I watched my nationals video, and now it jumps out at me when I see others do it. Just a thought...

Honestly, just a bad day. If it had been a practice session I would have just packed it in and said "I'm going home." To really go into detail, the gun problems really got inside my head and hurt my focus. The only stage where I was really calling my shots and feeling good about things was Paper Poppers where I made up the miss on the popper just automatically. My gun wants to work but apparently I don't want to let it. I fudged my grip on the first shot of the match and completely stopped the slide from moving. I blame putting on too much Pro Grip, it caused my mags to bind up as well... I wonder how much velocity I gained on that one shot :p

Plus the slide never locked back... gotta get my weak hand further rearward on the gun, it usually does.

Oh well, I didn't shoot particularly well but still had fun.

First 3 gun match of the year. I shot pretty terribly, but I did have fun. One nice thing about 3 gun compared to pistol is the room for improvement I have on easy stuff like remembering how I staged a gun or ditching long guns faster.

Here my view of the same match that Donovan posted. I was shooting Limited with an enhanced Glock 21 with standard mags. Despite only have 13 rounds per mag, I managed to pull into second. There were a few stages where having a 16-18 round gun would have made a big difference...so I ordered some mag extensions.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ojdSQLSMgA

really not that bad for literally not shooting a single round for 3 months.

the dumbest thing I did was of course the epic forgetting about KSTG cover rules on stage 5 (which bumped me from 3rd to 16th in one fell swoop) but the second dumbest and the one I have been thinking most about happened on stage 2. took two well placed shots at the headbox for T1, then proceeded to aim at the headbox of T2 forgetting that I had the whole target to work with. I then readjusted POA to the body, but that little bobble screwed up my rhythm for the rest of the stage. and then I forgot how to shoot an index card on the last target. Possibly because of my deep and enduring love for Tyrion Lannister (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrion_Lannister#Tyrion_Lannister). best character ever.

I'll upload Vinh's match soon, if he wants me to, that is.

Glad that is over!

Was a tough match where most of the targets were tight shots: Partials, covered by no-shoots, far away (25-30 yard steel). The weather, here in Northern Illinois, was typical hot-humid summer. (Why anyone suffers through a long, cold, grey winter, then a hot-ass summer is beyond me... I gotta move soon...)

The match was grueling due to the weather and the length: 13 stages.

My buddies and I shot the match in a 2-day format, 1/2 on Saturday, then 1/2 on Sunday. I chumped it up some, but shot straight and managed to squeak in at 8th place. Ben Stoeger took first. Matt Mink (from CZ), took 2nd.

2012 IDPA East Coast Championship @ Caswell Ranch. I was shooting CDP/SS...I won 2nd place and frankly I gave 1st place away. Two HNT's didnt help and I was s-l-o-w. Missed 1st place by 17.12...There were only 8 people in our class so I was never in jeopardy of getting a match bump :p.

Were you required to shoot left hand only for the last two targets around the back of the car?

No to all.

Right hand is my support hand but it seemed like a better option because reaching over to support seemed like extra movement and time. Also I was able to open the door while shooting.

I closed the door because it was in my way. Did not even think about it. In retrospect the door on those Chevys are very large. I would have had to take two steps out and it would have exposed me to the first target forcing me to take two steps back.

When I went prone I used my support hand to go down fast. I felt comfortable shooting with my strong hand so I did. Although I got a little excited and pulled the first shot requiring me to take a 4th.

Do you mind me asking why you were wondering? I had several other ask why I did that during the match. They thought it put me at a disadvantage. I just thought about how I may act in a real situation and that was get out and move as fast as possible.

ToddG
08-26-2012, 08:30 PM
There are very few instances in which shooting one-handed pays off. You may think you're faster but since most people practicing acquiring a 2-handed grip a lot more than a 1-handed grip, they're actually as fast (or faster) getting both hands on the gun. Certainly most people are faster & more accurate at speed shooting 2-handed.

This is an interesting stage from last weekend's night shoot. From a starting point, 4 out of 6 targets are partially covered. I shot them all from the starting position, everybody else ran through.

This is a run of one of a better shooters that allows to see the stage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlSI5IcNgOo&feature=player_embedded

This is me shooting. Nothing here to see just hear how the splits become slower as I am shooting farther out. After the third shot I heard a sound as if I hit a barrel, and I felt I needed to readjust my aim. When scoring the target there was no evidence of barrel being hit, but it did cost me a second or more. The darkness, the strobe and the echo were absolutely confusing, and I've shot in no-light before.

Well I told myself from the start that I would video and post every match I shot including the good, the bad and the ugly.

I'll let you decide which one was ugly and which one was bad! LOL

Great Match!! Awesome to see all the volunteers coming together to help. Had a great time except for the first stage where I busted up my knee coz I forgot to put on my kneepads. If you're in the area and want to help or participate, checkout http://www.rentonuspsa.org/forums

I can sum up my performance (or lack of) due to one thing. Lack of confidence. We started on Stage 4, and after getting a miss on two consecutive stages, I lost all confidence in my shooting ability and slowed down unnecessarily hoping to get my hits. My overall time was 2-3 seconds slower than all the other Masters in the match. I should have shaken the feeling off and shot the match like I could have.

Every stage after the first two, I thought too much about getting my hits and stressed over it. I have to learn how to let go. That and getting a total of four misses and two no-shoots (on the last stage), didn't do well for my placement.

That said, Keith Tyler and gang put up a fantastic match in a gorgeous range. Every bay has it's own covered area where we can relax in the sun and hydrate. Also, thanks to Omar Newbury and Larry Watson for running the squad through all the stages.

Home range advantage. More relaxed attitude towards shooting works.

From my first actual IPSC match in a year, 1st place by 11% overall. A few brain fades, one gets lazy when one is just shooting for fun at his own range apparently

Here's my view of the PB match on Sunday. Silly, stupid mistakes. My dot was too bright on Stage 4 - Pushy and what I thought was my dot was actually the reflection artifact from having the dot too bright shining on the lens. That's why I missed that headshot from such a close distance.

and my weak hand is.... weak.

Sundays match, all large stages 31-33 rounds (yeah, rules who cares right?). First place in PD by 7.6%. I believe wold have won Standard (scores still in minor) and 2nd or 3rd in Open, possible win in Classic too. Felt good to hit what we'd call a major match and not make any major errors. Hit the hard targets no problem, including the awesome double swingers on Stage 1 (can't see them in my video). Now to train harder and lose more mass.

Stage 1, a 270 degree range, sort of. Had a miss on a double stack target, let the recoil carry 2nd shot up into top target. Then had a hard time seeing Poppers when I opened the door.

Stage 2, a nice give'r stage, that I screwed in the window, again on poppers that I just couldn't see well. No sun in my eyes this time so I don't know WTF really.

Stage 3, things coming together. Could have down a few things better, but first stage win of the day

the next

Stage 4, again, things improving, IPSC mini targets at 15, challenging, but fun, another win

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boOLCa9oJY8

Stage 5, need to trust my sights more and riser/faller targets, and could've moved more. But won this one too

Stage 6, actually the first stage win of the day, not stage 3, as I shot this one first. Bloody moving steel (or is that my front sight trying to leave too quick?) Totally pooched my plan after the first reload, had to make due and try and save it and squeaked out a nice stage win.

Fun USPSA match at Marysville Rifle Club's monthly in Marysville, WA. It was a late start for me with lots of stupid mistakes but got better as the day progressed. We started on Stage 4.

Robot, love that last stage, Paper, poppers Paper. Great run.

Took this today with a new headcam I got, Tachyon Ops HD. This is the first headcam I've owned and editing was done on Youtube, which sucks. I am impressed with the quality of the video considering the poor lighting conditions, dark, with crappy overhead lights. No idea on my hits as the targets were shot to crap. Yes it was only 7yds as well. Sight picture looked good, and my time, I think it was 4.87 or something, was in line with my normal clean runs. Reload wasn't bad, but I can do better. I find that I transition better right to left, which goes against 90% of what I've been told or taught, so whenever possible I go that way. Although I won't do it just for the sake of it, it still has to make sense on a stage.

Felt good the entire match - didn't push very hard at all.
Finished 22nd overall, 81% of Eric Grauffel.

Beretta ran like a top!
