Hi guys and gals. Is it too early to start the AR15A4/6920 vs FN15 Series comparisons?

Why so quiet? Did I say something wrong? As far as I've heard, Colt uses regular Mil-spec barrels and FN uses CHF barrels. Is this true? Thoughts? Thanks.

US Colt barrels are not CHF. The Canadian Colt barrels are CHF. FN are CHF.

The guns Colt (US) submitted to the USMC IAR comp (and lost to HK) had Canadian barrels.

I think the best general purpose AR barrel on the market is the US Colt SOCOM heavy profile 14.5" barrel. Loved that thing- I won more matches with that barrel then any other I ever owned. Mine was very used from a pawn shop outside a base and covered in spray paint. I put 14,000 rounds through it and it still held 4" with open sights and Fed M193 at 200 yds. I foolishly sold it during the spike in the market two years ago.

My guess would be Colt and FN would be of similar quality- with FN having better QC.

Here is a 5-shot group prone, unsupported (no mag planted in the ground) at 200 yards with a 4MOA T1. You can see the other groups I shot getting my zero.

I switched it to a DD CHF mid length barrel and Larue rail and it just isn't the same

Interesting.....I think that's the first I've ever heard anyone speak out in favor of it.

FN is not using CHF barrels in their commercial offerings as of now, but they are available for sale separately if one was so inclined as to install one.

Very Nice to know!

Now, how hard is it for a shade tree gun tinkerer to install a front sight base on a barrel?

I will avoid the hammer forged topic but for installing a FSB, depends on the type and if you want it done correct.

If you want a clamp on, easy enough to DIY. If you want one that is drilled and pinned, it is a bit more complicated for the DIYer. You need the right tools to do it. Mostly a good jig, vise set up, and a quality press and good bits.

Oh, I'd want it done correctly. Standard A2/A4 FSB.

Probably be best to send it out?

Once you see how it's done at the factory in a TDP compliant installation, you know it needs to be sent out.
