I shot my first deer with an M4 yesterday. It was a 132# doe standing broadside at 100 yards. It was shot through the lungs with a Nosler Bonded Solid Base 64gr 223 bullet. The weapon was a DDM4 V7 lw with a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 1-4 scope with the illuminated SPC reticle. The doe ran about 40 yards. It was a good day.

Did you recover the slug? What condition were the lungs in?

I did not. I noted that the exit hole was bigger than the entrance hole.

Something is wrong with this story. I know because I have read and seen on TV (multiple times) that
hunters don't use AR type rifles.

(The first one I saw in the field was 20 + years ago.)

Congrats!

Congrats!

I wish we could use .223/5.56 on deer here in VA. The need to buy a dedicated hunting rifle is the main reason I don't hunt with one.

A 6.5 Grendel upper and a five round mag will fix that problem.

I just looked at the VA pistol hunting laws. .23 caliber and bigger :(

Don't discount the 6.8 either, I've had excellent luck with it, killed lots of hogs. And if it'll work on them, deer should be easy.

I've shot two deer and a bunch of hogs with 223 over the years. They have all been impressed by the round. Particular load used has varied over the years but the bonded softpoints wreak a lot of havoc. 55 grain bonded Federal and 64 gr Winchester (not bonded) have both exited on the deer I've shot. Both shots were within 50 yards. 223 loads shot into hogs have not exited. All of my shots were in the heart/lung area and some of the hogs were hammered or NSR'ed.
