View Full Version : Philosophical Poll: The Pain Experiment

During a recent impromptu family gathering, the following question was raised:

You are offered $1,000 to participate in an experiment. You will be tied down and tortured for an hour. You will feel the most intense and unbearable pain possible. You will have sharp needles jabbed into your eyeballs. You will have your flesh burned.

Afterwards, you will be given a pill that will both heal any injuries you have suffered and make you forget, completely and forever, any suffering you experienced. You'll only remember that you got $1,000 for being in an experiment and that no permanent harm came to you.

Would you do it?

i have done it..... i think....

NO WAY. i would struggle not knowing exactly what was done to me and would always fear the worst; like they made me hang out with Lindsay Lohan for hours while watching the movie Waterworld over and over again...not worth $1 million IMO

Nope. That kind of pain, even if I didn't remember it isn't worth a grand.

I would do it.

This is nothing compared to the burden and pain that Sallie Mae puts on my shoulders every month. Every little bit helps.

Interesting. When I was a young cliche in a band, our standard navel-gazing conversation was whether we would rather be in a forgettable boy band and get all the chicks and rockstar perks we could stomach, or be in Led Zeppelin or Rush or other seminal, groundbreaking band but live as a hermit when we weren't on stage or practicing. Easy for me, I don't think I'd mind being a hermit so much. The guys had a hard time replacing "being a hermit" with a lifestyle that would be distasteful enough to keep me from wanting to be in The Police.

ETA: Sherman House - in your case, I'm thinking the pill could be a placebo. (What, me? Dentist issues? Naaahhh... ;))

Nope. After getting shot and all of the problems that ensued afterwards, I'm done.

A grand? Fat chance in hell, that doesn't even cover student loans for a month.

I will bite the bullet and take an hour with her then. Especially if the pill fixes any injuries/diseases.

Naw. Been poor before. Could do it again. Won't grovel or degrade myself for a grand. LOL Make it a million and it gets interesting though. ;)

I'd do it. I'd use the money to get 2 new Glocks.

I have had needles stuck all in my face when I had an ear ripped off. They could never numb the ear so then they just fixed it while I was awake. It was no fun! $1000.00 maybe $5000.00 or more yes

Yes.

I'd like to know what it's like.

I wouldn't even watch a whole soccer game for $1,000.

I had to think about this a minute before I realized you weren't talking about your wife :)
As to the question: not for $1000, probably not for any amount.

Ha! It doesn't cover mine either! BUT, it would make the payment, "out of pocket," slightly less!

As described, no.

If the pill just took care of my injuries, rather than screwing with my brain, I might think about it.

$1k? No way.

Now for a Klondike bar.....

Nope, $1,000 just ain't worth it. $100,000+ maybe, but it'd have to be at least 6 figures for me to consider it.

Put me down in the "Big Ol' Girl" column. (Which I'm totally cool with, being a big ol' girl, and all...:o )

Most intense pain ever...no. Not because I'm a wuss, but because that kind of pain can cause severe problems that could lead to death prior to taking this magical pill. If we were talking about something like waterboarding, I would do it for the cash, though I would break in like 12 seconds, and there would be no need for an hour. If we are having a conversation where, hypothetically, there was no chance of going into shock, etc, and literally NO risk of any long-term damage or death, then I would definitely do it.

It should also be stated that the POSSIBILITY of this pain for an hour is much worse than the actual pain for an hour.

No, wait, I take it back, don't tell us anything.

Already done, wouldn't do it again. And, obviously, the pill only worked so-so.

Not for that little money, and not if I couldn't remember it. Add another 4 or 5 zeros and I'd think about it.
