View Full Version : Glock Dust Cover Question

I just noticed that the forward end of the dust cover on my Gen3 G17 lightly touches the lower part of the front end of the underside of the slide when the gun is in battery. Is that the norm?

Thanks,

Okie John

All of my Gen 4 17's do that as well. Normal and doesn't inhibit function or reliability.

Quite normal.

Otherwise known as the "Glock pig-nose".

Some who are supposedly in the know have said that it is the result of uneven cooling as the raw frame comes out of the mold, or something like that. But as Fred stated, it is simply a cosmetic issue.

Differential cooling.

It happens on all parts. The part farthest away from the center of heat mass of the part cools at a faster rate than the center of mass.

On plastic parts it often results in the parts drawing towards or away from that heat mass.

Can it be fixed on a DIY basis? Say, for arguments sake, I have mild OCD?

It's a Glock...a more constructive application of OCD would be towards a semi-custom or custom-built 1911...

That said, I vaguely recall a thread on some other forum several years ago involving dipping said frame into boiling water, and then re-shaping.

No, I don't recall for how long, or what portion of the frame needed to be dipped. Nor do I recall the specifics of the reshaping technique. Nor do I in any way attest to its efficacy. Frankly, if you have no operational issues, I'd call it good. You could always call Glock Tech Support, and ask for their feedback/support.

My recommendation: Find something more productive to obsess over.

Best, Jon

I shall heed the advice. My OCD is only surpassed by my laziness, so I'll find something easier to obsess over.

The "dust cover" on semi-auto pistols is there solely to protect the RSA; it offers no structural integrity.

No big effort to grind that puppy down a bit so it doesn't appear to touch. Plus, you'll be able to see through your gat all the way out to the muzzle!:D

For those who wish it to be done, I eliminate the pig nose in the same manner in which I prefer to perform grip reductions which is with heat and shaping.

Yep. Dip in boiling water then press on a table to straighten. Hold till cool.

I don't care about finish, but for some reason I need my stuff to be shaped nicely.

I agree.

But this one seems a bit outside the norm. A misshapen frame isn't scuffing on the slide or fit/finish. I understand his concern.

It's of absolutely zero operational consequence, and has been somewhat of a norm with Glocks for years, if not literally decades. I can see it as an item of aesthetic concern if I'm dumping thousands of dollars into a gun otherwise, but at the end of the day...it's still a Glock (and I'm not intending that in a pejorative sense). But don't expect me to be haunting the halls of Salient Arms, or worrying about stuff like this on my Glocks-I just don't see the point.

Forgive me Jon,

I can see how what I said read.

What I mean is, think about it, if you didn't know better a frame that rubbed where it wasn't designed to rub (ETA 2: posting at 3:43 A.M. I need to go to bed; typo) that might be a cause for concern. Now in this case it turns out that even though Glock didn't originally draw out the design to have a frame that rubs there; it's not a big deal and doesn't impede function.

That's all I was saying. I was simply empathizing with the OP. If you don't know it's not a big deal, you don't know, (ETA: which was the case for the OP) right?

God Bless,

Brandon.

Wait. You mean that you were never told that even a slightly wrong gun oil can cause a total breakdown requiring a complete rebuild of the flux capacitator? After all, what do you think causes Glocks to kaboom?

You use oil? I use Chuck Norris's tears. He gave me two and I haven't had to re-lube in years.
