this will likely seem retarded on a somewhat higher end up to date site, but, what is the perception here of this pistol/ammo combo? just thinking about it as a cheap tackle box/truck floor piece. almost all the ammo is FMJ. have occasionally seen SP in the past. i do know that at one time (50s?) it was the fastest production round out there, albiet with 85gr bullet. also know that it originated for the ppsh subgun for the tank riders in ww2. thanks for input,if any.

Excellent penetration, and the pistols that shoot it are relatively inexpensive (http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=F3TTCROM&name=Romanian+TT-C+Tokarev+7.62x25+Pistol&groupid=6), in addition to being Curio & Relic eligible. The ammunition (http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=ARA76225FMJ86&name=Red+Army+7.62x25+Tokarev+86grn+FMJ+50rd+Box&groupid=6) available these days tends to be newly manufactured commercial fodder, and the glory days of inexpensive corrosively primed stuff seems to have dried up.

As a general rule, modern defensive loading options are a tad limited in this caliber, and the TT33's are unsafe to carry in Condition 1 or 2.

Given my druthers, if you're on a budget, shop around for a police trade-in Glock 17, respring it, and use modern (http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?4337-Service-Caliber-Handgun-Duty-and-Self-Defense-Ammo), vetted and commonly available defensive ammunition.

If you just want a piece of Cold War history, pick up a Tok, but be aware of it's limitations in a modern defensive role.

*adjusts taped gun nerd glasses*

Actually, it was developed for the Tokarev TT30 pistol (although "developed" is a kind term for "stolen pretty much wholesale from the 7.63 Mauser round and renamed as glorious Soviet cartridge.")

But I agree with Fred in that there's just no good ammo for it for self-defense purposes, plus some of the surplus guns chambering it suffer from glorious socialist quality control problems, such as the decocker on the CZ 52 which acted like a second trigger on quite a few examples.

yes pistol development was prob as you said. meant the round origin. AIM is selling them cheap now < $250. it does have an add on for import required safety stuck on. as per the letter of the law-C&R? who knows? i know that post production safeties were a big flop a few years back with the chinese imports. this wouldn't be a primary or even a secondary defensive arm. just a gun that wouldn't bring a tear if it fell in the lake. please tell me where there are police trade glock 19s even close to $300. i just trawled broker and see some lower prices but ship, freight, transfer take them over $400. a real cheap disposable has some merit as i can keep my 1911 and not get in too deep. yes, fixed incomes suck at times-no OT available.

Well, here's my thumbnail review (http://cosmolineandrust.blogspot.com/2009/11/cold-war-heaters-polish-tokarev-and.html) of my Tokarev and CZ 52, if it helps.

Mosin46,
Check out the Polish P 64 in 9x18 Mak. C&R eligible and a nicer pistol than the Romanian TT's.

Cheap defensive guns don't get any better than a CZ-82 in 9x18mm Makarov.

I think the Tok is a fun pistol to shoot--its action is very strong and some of the velocity measurements are pretty amazing. In addition, you can sometimes pick up hollow point ammo at around $20 per box from SG Ammo (Prvi Partisan, I think). But as others say, it has real drawbacks as a defensive gun because it probably isn't safe to carry with a round in the chamber.

magic you are right. i had an 82-great piece. unfotunately it is like the mak,ppk etc. those walther clone like guns just eat the web of my rt hand despite lower energy rounds. does anyone with with similar problems re makarov type pistols know if this is an issue with the p64 radoms?

If you get bit by a Mak & PPK, you'll get bit by the P64.

(Also, we did work on a couple thousand of those things one summer for TGI when they imported a batch back in '03. Some had DA pulls that took two fingers.)
