I just picked up a used 3" Model 36 as a companion to my 4" K-frame. Intended uses are teaching new shooters and belt carry when walking in the woods. Concealment is not a priority. I'm looking for grips that will make it comfortable for small-to-medium-sized hands.

I like the Pachmayr Compac on a J- frame, but don't have much experience with other options.

The Pachmayr's are hard to beat for a J frame that's not going to be concealed.

Those are my first choice for one of your specified tasks- reducing recoil for a new shooter/tyro... or, an oldster facing a 60 round qual course using "service" ammunition.;)

They really make a difference, especially on an AirWeight/AirLite J.

Crimson Trace 305s, for several reasons.

Standard BOOT Grip on the left, the slightly extended "+S" version on the right.

Some alternatives made of Laminate construction if you prefer more pronounced finger-grooves:

Very nice; but the rubber on those Pachmyars wraps around the back strap and really absorb recoil.

I harbor no bias against rubber grips, believe me.

This. The Pachmayr Compacs are great if you don't need to hide the gun on an ankle or in a pocket.

Spegel Boot grips all the way, or Crimson Trace. I have both and while the CT is functionally pretty great the Spegels just feel... riiight.

If you like a hammer shroud, Bianchi Lightning grips can still be gotten (on that popular auction site that I won't name).

IME the 305s give about as good recoil control as many of the other rubber grips, except the extra cushy ones like the Decelerators, and one gets the laser to boot. On a wheelgun the CT grips are like a free SIRT pistol for your revolver, and are still available if you need the dot in a fight.

If you are using it in a belt holster they still conceal well, but these were the first grips that allowed me to comfortably shoot a j-frame all day. They just didn't work in the pocket or on an ankle holster.

Part number 60020

I use these for pocket carry as well as range use and in loose fitting pants they work OK.

They are for Centennial or Body Guard type J frames and they come up higher on the back strap than most other grips.

I like the S&W 3 finger Revised Combat Grip. BTW its the same grip they but on the M640/M649.

My M642-2 came with a boot grip and I cant stand them. With a 3 finger grip I can have better control . Especially if shooting with my left hand.

BTW I pocket carry using the S&W revised 3 finger combat grip . Fits perfectly in my wrangler cargo`s and using a Nemesis pocket holster.

You can go to the S&W website to see the grip.

I looked at those but was scared they might be bigger than the S&W Revised Combat Grip.

It always good to know of a 3 finger grip you can pocket carry in cargo pants /shorts in y case.
