Anybody have any time behind this one? Trooper 224's beautiful FAL re-kindled something I've been mulling over for a while… I want a bigger-caliber general purpose carbine. One like his, assuming I could even find one, would be no doubt priced beyond either my means or what I would be willing to pay.
I am aware of other folks producing .308 AR carbines, but I'm not familiar with any of them. If you know of one as good as the Colt, I'd be interested to hear about it. There are some makers I want no part of, period; but I'll keep an open mind.
Thanks.

Nyeti does. I think he just got another one recently.
The KAC ECC and K2 are nice, as are the LaRue's (if you can find one). The LMT shoots very well, but is heavy for GP use. The Colt 901 and S&W M&P seem to be better than many others.

Hard to beat a SCAR17. Low weight, folds, reliable, easy to clean....

Breaks optics, hard to get mags, let alone parts...

I love my 901. It is a little heavy to be honest. I wish I had a class or more rounds through it, but the limited time I have been able to devote to it, it is soft shooting and way more accurate than my humble skills allow it to express.

Doc, I have not had a problem getting parts or mags. In fact you can get all the mags you want, 10 or 20's on midwayusa right now. As for the breaking optics thing, well.... I'm really not sure I believe it. I have had lots of Optics on my SCARS (I'm on my second 17) and I have had none of them fail. I realize this is a small sample and my optics are all good quality, but I haven't really run into anyone else with a 17 that has experienced failures either. Aimpoint, Elcan, ACOG, USO, and I think I even had my Hendsolt on there. No issues.

Another option is a PTR-91 GI (http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/ptr-91-gi-rifle-939-atlanticfirearms-com-detail.html?Itemid=0), and a wood stock set (http://www.hkparts.net/shop/pc/HK-G3-91-PTR-Wood-Stock-Forearm-Set-Surplus-112p16457.htm). Add a bunch of inexpensive surplus magazines (http://www.robertrtg.com/store/pc/Mags-and-Pouches-c24.htm). About a grand or so. :D

The DSA FALs are expensive, but nicely put together. A good friend of mine has had six of the frickin' things in various flavors and helping him blow through ammo is (was) one of my favorite past times. The DSA guns always functioned nicely and were nicely accurate for the ~1500 rounds I've fired through his. Full disclosure - I have no idea about the DSA beyond that limited experience, and mine might have been colored by crates of free ammo to shoot. FALs are pretty heavy, but I found the 18" guns were always well balanced and easy to carry and shoot, even for my small size (5'7"), but still not as handy as an AR.

shane45--I've seen big boxes full of broken optics from Mk17's...

I had an early DSA SA58c. It was a great rifle. But I couldn't live with the ergo's and mag changes. Also, mounting optics is a bit of a challenge if you require precision and repeatability.

Doc, could you please post or PM me info on what optics are failing? I'd appreciate it, thanks.

I've had good results with my Armalite AR-10B and SCAR-17.
The SCAR has a reputation for breaking Eo- Techs and not playing well with Larue mounts but aimpoints and good quality variable scopes have held up just fine. They are also hard on IR lasers.I started with an Aimpoint M4 and I'm currently running a trijicon 1.25-4 in an ADM mount without issue. Mag availability has mproved in the past year but other parts are harder to come by. It's light, accurate and reliable but you do give up some of the training / familiarity cross over of an AR pattern gun.
The early AR-10s, including mine, had some reliability issues. I sent mine back for the factory update and it has run 100% since.
If I was starting from scratch, I'd look at the S&W M&P 10 or the new Armalite AR10A ( the one that takes PMAGS) and add the trigger and free float hand guard of my choice.
The Colt is nice but has a lot of proprietary parts. It's a bit on the heavy side and you are wedded to the 1913 quad rail.

I have a 901 and another enroute. One is filling a DMR roll and will likely get a full stock if I can do it. The other will be getting a COmp M4 and 3X magnifier. That one will also be getting a 5.56mm upper with a Aimpoint T1 or T2. For me it is an easy choice. My LaRue Ranger rifle is wonderous, but is worth too much now to shoot. I need a total beater. An under 2 grand gun that I can caliber convert made by a pretty established company that takes PMAGS is perfect. Heck, I can even get a 7.62 x 39 "Yemeni" upper for it. Weight isn't a big deal to me as I am driving it in a vehicle and not "humping it". Mine has been reliable and a good shooter and I have no complaints. I think it is really good bang for the buck. I really wanted a MR762, but can't justify the money. The LMT was also on my choice list. I still have FAL's and 91's, but the 901 better fulfills what I am actually looking for these days.

That right there was one of the reasons I bought mine. A little derp and the corner of my tin foil hat are going to show through here, but I bought mine post Aurora but pre Sandyhook. My line of thinking was that if legislation was passed limiting or banning rifles, I would have a rifle that I could convert to multiple calibers. At least that's how I sold my wife on it. The Ambi mag and bolt releases are proprietary, and god help my credit card if Colt offers an upper with Keymod instead of 1913 rails because of how much lighter it would be, but if I could own only one rifle from now until forever, it would be a 901. I had a FAL a decade ago and gladly sold it because I couldn't shoot it due to a congenital shoulder injury, but the 901 shoots soft enough for me to tolerate it.
I had an M&P10 for a while, & while I can't vouche for it long term, it was sub MOA @ 100yds & seemed well built. I'd trust it for a gen purpose rifle.

I put down a deposit on a 901.
Went to fill out the 4473 and changed my mind.
H&K MR762 will be here Friday.
I really wanted the H&K when I "settled" for the Colt. Decided to suck it up and spend the money and be happy.
I still think the Colt is a great rifle, just not what I really wanted.

Yes... they are stupidly expensive, have stupidly expensive magazines and parts are stupidly expensive.
But dammit. I want one.
Good thing my boy wants to be a BP Agent instead of a Doctor because I'm spending his college money on a H&K rifle.

That was my initial intention; for the same reasons.
But then Jody has to pipe up, and feel HIS logic too.
I'm so confused... :D

When I posted that price I was thinking.... "No too terrible."
About a grand more than a 901. I've lusted after more expensive things.

I'm a big fan of the Colt 901. It is my current 762 gas gun pick vs a LaRue OBR, PredatAR and M&P10.
It comes well setup from the factory, is capable of shooting near moa precision and the weight is not bad.

That logic is what landed me in Raman Noodles land when I acquired my SR25EMC  I don't put emotions to objects... but that is one of the very few firearms to evoke an emotional attachment. I love that rifle!

I'm at least $4k into it and thats just adding a few spare mags and BUIS (Nein! Uber-rifle doesn't come with sights). By the time I get an optic I could have bought a nice used Toyota Corolla instead.
The Colt 901 is a damn nice rifle.
Probably way more rifle/$ than the H&K.
BTW: The first thing im going to do with my MR762 is throw it in the mud, photograph it and then post on HKPro to watch their anal retentive, safe queen polishing heads explode.

Hmmm.
My brand-loyalty urge is swiftly diminishing.
I got past the desire for that Ed Brown 1911, but then this caught my eye. I guess the drive to buy a ridiculously over-priced gun won't go away; maybe I'll just score another trap gun. That will definitely drain the mad money fund...

Towards the end of October, I understand there is going to be a new .308, announced and ready to ship, that will re-jigger the thinking in this category.

Thanks for the information. Did I mention that patience is NOT one of my strong points?
There will be both a 14.7 +/- barrel with permanently attached muzzle device and 18 something length barrel option. The shorter barrel .308 is a tad under 8 pounds bare. Both use P Mags.

Nothing hands on. I hear there are some fit issues using other DPMS patten uppers on the PSA lower and some fit problems using aftermarket triggers. It's tempting but I don't want to be a beta tester.

I don't have rounds downgrade yet but the Troys we bought seem promising if just a little portly.

I think it is 10/28 but don't hold me to that.
A special month -- a new limited edition Beretta and a new .308.
