Random Saturday;)

So you're dropped off into the middle of Iraq tomorrow. You can only bring ONE pistol. Must be a factory out of the box handgun. Which would you pick if you had to blend in/Evade, and then successfully escape?

I'm thinking G17

Ive never served a day in an overseas combat zone or been shot at by angry Muslims, but id pick the Beretta. If this infidel has to bite the dust in Iraq, it wont be with an ugly pistol in his hand.

Glock 17.

Frankly, if I'm evading and escaping I'd rather have a large amount of gold coins as well as some hefty rolls of cash. Bribery beats trying to fight your way out with a pistol.

If I'm fighting, I'll take an M-1 tank, thank you very much.

And if I'm stuck with a pistol, I'll take the G-17 because it is lighter and I'm lazy.

Glock.

We issued tons to the police/military there.

I'd prefer an AK there though; it's the most common combat rifle there I'd imagine.

Fisticuffs is an option, too... I guess. Why you'd pick it over hot lead, I don't know.

Short answer - Glock 17. However, a factory D hammer spring in a Beretta 92G-SD is an attractive option.

I have just always felt like unlikely scenarios opened the door for answers not limited to the original criteria. If I had to pick between just the two - I'd take the Beretta, because I know I shoot it better than the Glock.

But in the fantasy world where I get dropped into a warzone armed only with a handgun, I'd probably prefer a Good Samaritan - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Samaritan_%28comics%29

Glock 17, I'd take the lighter weight noise maker.

Something smaller that's easier to conceal would be better. The only thing I liked about carrying an M9, is that i could carry it loaded and IWB, and not be in view of the loaded weapon ninnies at the DFAC and PX.

I don't know that it would make too much difference. Both seem relatively common from pictures I've seen, both are generally high quality. I'd go with whatever was most common in the particular area I was dropped in, and do my utmost to not need to use it anyway. If I think I can get away with killing a bad guy and grabbing his rifle, I'd do it, but I can't see too many cases where I'd have a chance to do that without annoying a lot of PKM and RPG armed opfor types. At the very least, though, I'd be making sure that there are no videos of me on youtube having my head removed.

In that scenario I'd pick the Glock 17.

If I'm paying for it, for my own use, here in the US, and can care for it like I'd care for any other gun I own, I'd pick the Beretta.

Was a bit hesitant to answer this at first, but figure this may be more than theoretical for some folks these days, so perhaps my perspective might be useful.

Glock. Same choice I made the last time I was there.

The 19 is easier to come by over there, however, and will have better magazine availability as a result. There also tends to be more 19s around that have at least the factory night sights.

I did choose the Beretta for a few different occasions due to some very specific mission factors. The challenges there were numerous, not least of which because there is no guarantee that it will actually be an M9, versus the older S models - quite a few were apparently brought in during the 80's as a status weapon to replace the then standard issue Tariq 1951 clones due to familiarity. The heel magazine release is less than ideal.

Having said that, it is easier to find a suitable grab (holster) for the Beretta, due to the proliferation of amateur leatherworkers that were crafting for sale at the base hosted markets to all the officers over the years that wanted to ditch the Bianchi belt for something else. Unfortunately, a lot of these are shoulder holsters - favourites of the desk types that usually had the time to go shopping (especially given how frequently the places would be shut down due to various threats). But there is a better than even chance of finding a passable pancake style with a modicum of retention, to at least ensure you can get your 80's tactical groove on.

If these weren't available, then my third choice would be to fall back to the CZ. More than a few floating around, usually in tolerable condition. Varying origins, including Turkish and other clones. But very heavy in the heat, and the sun is too bright for stainless so one really has to pay attention to avoiding rust from sweat buildup when concealed.

If I got dropped in to Iraq tomorrow - whether I had an M9 or G17 would be the least of my problems...... :P

Having never owned a Glock and having been shooting a Beretta for more than 20 years, I would choose the Beretta for familiarity alone.

I'd take a Glock 9mm most places in the world...probably easier to get mags.

Besides, I mainly shoot Glocks and 1911s.

You could do fine with a Beretta.

But I'd much rather have a roll of forty US 20s and a Canadian passport.

I'd take whichever one I had at the time.

They're both good reliable pistols, and if I were aiming to E&E I wouldn't be looking to use it unless the need arised.

And I'd be working pretty hard on avoiding needing it.

ReverendMeat

Of the two choices, probably the G17. I really like the Beretta but I've had more trigger time on the Glock. Now if I wasn't confined to those two options, I'd go with a CZ 75. More rounds through the 75 than Glocks and Berettas combined.

I don't care for either choice, but I have marginally more experience with the Beretta, so...

Beretta. I prefer a hammer fired metal frame gun these days. 18 rounds in the mag beats 15-17. And it'll probably fetch more money when I trade it off to some Kurd, so that I can buy a plane ticket of that shithole.

The whole concept of a thread like this is rather sophomoric so it's not suprising it went that way.

I initially took the question to be exactly that - sophomoric at best, or Walter Mitty fantasizing at worst. On reflection, though, there are times when it is hard to ask certain kinds of questions in a straight up fashion. Sometimes that is an issue of classification, sometimes that is an issue of discretion, and more often for the new guys it is the challenge of being afraid to talk about such things with folks who had been there already, especially if there was multiple tours. Now, I have no idea if the OP falls into whatever category - but once asked, the discussion may surface things to answer such a question. And there are a lot of folks who are finding themselves in situations they had not previously had to consider before the Spring turned to killing fields.

Polls suck. But reaching out to folks you have come to respect through their discussions over time as a sort of Delphi gut check sucks a lot less.

Then again, maybe this all just gave some cubicle dweller something to space out on for an afternoon. But if nothing else, it created some discussions here, and offline, among some folks that have been having to think real hard about some things. Things like what it means to be in places where the old perimeters are gone, or so porous as to be illusory; and what moving in complex urban environments without the usual battle rattle might require - especially for those that haven't had to dance that particular goat rope before.

Whenever I see one of these and am tempted to shake my head, I try to think of them (like I said in the Jamestown thread) as gedanken experiments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thought_experiment). What will people say, and why? What does it tell us about their experiences, attitudes, beliefs, education?

Or, yeah, maybe someone just got bored and couldn't clock out early...

US DoD put 190,000 Glock 19s and a couple million magazines into circulation for the Iraqi National Police Forces.

If natives are using reliable gear I try to pick whatever they are using and in Iraq it's Milled Bulgarian AKs and Glock 19s FTW!
