Question on behalf of my father who just got a Thunderbolt:

He is trying to set up his email (which is on a personal domain through GoDaddy.com). It keeps telling him it cannot reach the server. He is still getting and sending through that account using his Blackberry. Any ideas?

Specifically, he is receiving but cannot send.

Is he using the default mail client?

If he can't send, it sounds like either he has the incorrect outgoing server or the incorrect security setting for it. Does the server use SSL?

He says he's tried SSL and non-SSL, both with and without password. He insists he has the right server name. He's using the default mail client.

He probably needs to connect to the smtp server on TCP port 465 (w/ SSL), and it may be requiring authentication.

I assume the auto setup function isn't working at discovering the server settings, right?

I had a friend who had a similar problem and he had to use K9 email client in order to get it to work. I'm not sure of the specifics but the default client (2.2) wouldn't let him send. It is worth a try to download K9 (free) and see if that will work.

K9 is an open source fork of the default client. I'd recommend it over the one the phone ships with either way.

Wow. I can add yet another thing to the "reasons to never use GoDaddy for anything" list, I suppose.
