I'm currently on a Moro insurrection kick and wanting to buy a Krag-Jorgensen carbine.
What should I look for and how much should I be willing to pay?
I looking a "shooter" not necessarily a collector grade, but overall decent condition would be nice.

If you want a good shooter at a reasonable, consider a sporterized Krag Rifle. many wind up esthetically similar to the carbine.

I'll try to get some pics of the one I inherited from my Dad. I don't know what it is about that thing but I've always shot it exceptionally well.

You'll want to hand load for it if you do any real volume of shooting. Remington still makes factory ammo but availability can be hit or miss. My understanding is they make one batch / run of it per year.

PS - Speaking of the Moro insurrection, an 1985 Winchester Carbine in ".30 U.S." is one of my bucket list guns.

I'm still kicking myself because, when my Great Uncle Bill passed and I was asked what I wanted from his gun collection, all I asked for was "A shotgun and a .22." Why, oh why did I not go for the sporterized Krag carbine he made himself? (Guy walked into the shop with a barreled action, asked how much to put a stock on it, Uncle Bill named a price, guy pronounced it Too High, and offered to sell it...)
I can't be sure, but I think Turner Kirkland bought up everything else in the collection... :( (Uncle Bill lived in Lebanon, TN, and his collection was probably 70% muzzleloading shotguns.)
To end the digression, here's a pic of me shooting DirtCrashr's Krag:

Multi-cam and a Krag. That's a combo you don't see everyday.

Ha! Yet another chance to plug Milius' "The Wind and The Lion."

Look close at the Prez's rifle as he dismounts:

A real Krag carbine is going to be crazy spendy. But there's a solution! The DCM sold a blue jillion cut-down rifles to NRA members back in the day, and these "NRA carbines" are identifiable by the fact that the front sight is on a band rather than straight on the barrel. They go for maybe half to a third as much as an actual 1899 Carbine in the same condition. Figure five-hundred bucks or so for a cosmetically decent shooter, more if you want it pretty, less if you don't mind ugly.

Real carbines are scarce enough and run to a grand and a half and more for anything that doesn't look like it came up off the USS Maine, so if you lock onto one of those, it's worth getting an expert to put eyeballs on it before shelling out the dough. Fakes exist.

I can't decide which I want worse: A '95 in .30-40 or one of the Russian contract ones in 7.62x54R.

That's easy, the musket version of the 7.62x54R.

While a .30-40 would be sweet, it's difficult to turn down the fire breathing, young Elvis power of the 7.62x54R.

I'd have to sell an organ.

What's the big deal about that? I mean, I'd sell one of your organs to get that '95... ;)
