Does anyone know what the purpose of the gizmo at the back of some devel 1911 slides are? I've never been able to tell it's purpose. I assume it's held in place by the FPS. Some smith used to drill and tap a hole in that area, affix a set screw and lock the FPS in place, but Devel's modification has puzzled me for quite some time now

I fought the instinct to blaspheme and say "To draw attention away from the fit on that ejector" and lost. :o

Is that a crack in the back near corner of the beaver tail ?
I pray God that they did not put a Millet Dual crimp (the abomination) front sight on that slide.

To be fair, that beavertail didn't come out of a ziploc baggie.

Also hard chrome shows any flaws.
If you're not going to make it perfect, don't use hard chrome.
That gizmo is referred to as a prototype firing pin safety on a page I was looking at:

great! thank you. I know he built a Browning safety, but didn't know about this 1911 unit. Now if I can only see how it works

That's a good question. Looking at the wear on the near edge of the hammer... I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

This page:

calls it a "hammer activated firing pin safety", whatever that means.
And yes I'm headed right back to look through more of Novak's collection. What a cool link.

I bet that is a mid 1980's 1911. We have come a long way with lots of hard work by the pioneers.

Well, yeah. Duh. I mean, it's a Devel Gammon. Early/Mid-'80s for sure.
