View Full Version : Recommend me a fixed blade EDC knife!

Hey all. Pretty uneducated in the world of fixed blade cutlery. I'd like something with a 3-4" blade and a fixed handle to carry IWB in a sheath along with my EDC gun and spare magazine. Better to have one and not need it and need it and not have one...I have a couple of Kershaw folders and a CRKT M16 that I broke the lock mechanism on. SO with that said, if you guys have any recommendations they are appreciated. I'd like to stay under $200 if possible.

Blade rigs (a website) has some good combos in that price range.

Will this be a dedicated defensive blade, reserved for pokey-stabby chores? Will it need to also do normal everyday utility work?

I have been carrying this for about 2 months now, and like it a great deal:

And it's in your price range. Joe's a good dude, too.

I like the looks of that knife. I definitely want a paracord wrap handle. How hard is that particular tanto blade to sharpen (or have you not had to sharpen yours)? Whatever I get is going to be for dedicated defensive use for those times I cannot carry a firearm or when I want to carry both a firearm and fixed blade. I have other knives for utility work that I don't care about beating on. But whatever I buy might have to perform the odd/random utility job while I'm out if I'm wearing it.

I have not had to sharpen mine yet. I pocket carry a small Swiss Army knife for the utility chores, and the defensive blade is solely for slicing angry meat.

I think the blade would be easier to sharpen than many other tanto's I have seen. There is a very slight bevel on both sides. It's something I talked about with both Darryl and Joe. I like that a lot, since it would be much easier for a deployed Soldier or a road deputy to sharpen while in the field. I have other tanto blades from Benchmade, Emerson, etc; and I send them back for a factory sharpening most of the time. All the rest get the Spyderco Sharpmaker.

The front edge and main edge also have a very subtle but quite useful curve. Instead of just smacking into the meat and cleaving like a very sharp axe, the curve allows it to dig in and slice more effectively. Think how a cavalry saber works - same principle.

There are a lot of very subtle things about it, that you have to see and handle. If you live anywhere near me in Texas, I'd be happy to let you handle the live blade and trainer. Big plus, for 200 bucks plus shipping, I got a live blade, trainer and a sheath for each.

A nice feature of the cord wrap, is that Joe uses a sealant on the nylon. So if you get some felon blood on it that is contaminated by hookers and blow, you can just soak the entire thing in hydrogen peroxide.

The sheath is good, and I put one of these on it for a horizontal carry OWB on my Atlas belt: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0048KMJAC/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I did have to use slightly longer bolts, to make it work with the Kydex sheath. But it disappears under an untucked polo at work. I think it would also compliment AIWB pistol carry that way.

Hope that helps, let me know if I may be of any further assistance. Stay safe.

Thanks!! I carry the HiTS Ti Knife everyday in a vertical shoulder holster as I work in an NPE. I barely even know its there, it is by far my favorite knife. The pistol I keep in my go bag :)

I hate tanto blades but the maker of the HiTS knife has some solid work and I own one knife of his, cord wrapped Pikal, and am gonna see about doing a run of knives of my own through him.

That's not to try and advertise my stuff but rather show that the work is solid and fairly priced. Really hard to argue with.

I use a izula 1 but am trying to find a iwb holster that stabilizes it enough weak side appendix. I have a dark star horizontal that I loved but just didn't work with my body type, so I made it into a make shift iwb. Only problem is the sheath isn't quite long enough so the handle tends to lean out, which prints a little to much in some situations.

The Cold Steel Braveheart is a great blade for the money. They even come with a sheath made of plastic that can be made serviceable if you spend a little time modifying it. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. I’ve since started using one is a BladeRigs sheath which is much better.

The Original Spyderco Street Beat, not the larger Perrin model and custom sheath by Rich at Custom Carry Concepts (stock sheath is crap) will be under $200 and is a great EDC package.
You will have to send the knife to Rich. He did an amazing sheath for me. www.customcarryconcepts.com

IMO, nothing beats the Bark River line of knives. They are extremely well made, razor sharp, & backed by the best warranty & CS on earth. They even replaced a knife I lost, for free! Knivesshipfree.com & DLTtrading.com are 2 great sites for these knives.

Speaking of the Esee knives. Has anyone found a good trainer that replicated the knives? I love me Candiru in my DSG sheath carried at around 1100. But, without a trainer it's a bit problematic from the training perspective.

Actually they are both Fred's designs. The larger version is the Street Bowie. There is also the offshore made Boker version, Neck Bowie. Fred's handle design is nice but really only favors saber grip.

I carried a spyderco street beat and liked it quite a bit (i never had a problem running it reverse grip). My normal edc is a Mark Goldsworthy MG Pakal in 440c (under $200 and he can extend or shorten the blade if you like). Have an AmericanKami GITFO on order that may replace it, though.

I feel your pain. I had a kydex sheath made by a budding holster maker for my Izula II. It is nice and minimal but like you said it isn't substantial enough to keep the handle from leaning out. Bummer because its a nice little sheath. I currently run the ESEE factory sheath IWB which works but not quite ideal.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. They are Both Fred Perrin's designs, but the original Street Beat, not the Street Bowie is the one I prefer.
I carry mine reverse grip off-side in Rich's sheath. If you have very large hands, the grip may be too small.

For those of you carrying the HiTS blade, what attachment method are you using for the sheath? Spyderco G-Clip hole patterns don't line up and it rides to high with an iwb loop. Is a Large Tech Lock my only option?

G-Clip works at 45 degrees.

Tuckable IWB loop. The strut will get the sheath deeper.

Standard IWB loop around the sheath body works for centerline carry with handle down, left of the belt buckle.

Paracord works great for static cord IWB, pocket carry or gasp neck carry.

I use one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0048KMJAC/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I carry it horizontally at 11:30-ish on my belt, and it disappears under an untucked polo or T-shirt. My work environment is quite restrictive on any real or perceived weapons. So far it has passed unnoticed this way. Plus the dual strap anchors it quite nicely around a belt loop, and makes it easier to deploy than the Tech-Lock I tried at first.

Will the ti blade standup to edc cutting abuse?

The carbide edge is a huge help for this. Many Ti Blades have a soft edge and are strictly "people cutters". The edge on the Ti HiTS is, and stays really sharp and is a great EDC knife. One lives around my neck from the time I wake up till I go to sleep. I wouldn't pry much with it, but for everyday cutting it works well.

Depending on your idea of EDC cutting abuse. No prying. No cutting metal or heavy bone. No batoning through wood. Would be my suggestions for durability. Cutting cardboard strops the edge. Cuts meat fine. Works great on paracord.

We have done prototype "military" models with a sharpened false edge. While they are wicked, I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze of going from a very legal carry knife to one that is illegal in many places.

Up1911fan, could you take a photo of the G Clip & knife only? I also have a HiTS, and have had trouble finding a method of attachment that allows me to draw the blade one handed. My sheath is tight, looks like your attachment might work for me.

The moleskin was added for comfort against my boney hip.

Very nice. Definitely has a Yojimbo feel to it.
The guy who makes them trains in Janich's MBC. That's a big part of why I bought it.

Up1911Fan, Thank you! I actually ordered a G Clip yesterday. It's difficult to draw the knife with one hand using a rubber loop attachment. I think I will like the solid attachment it looks like the G Clip offers.

Interesting. I have a Yojimbo, and a pair of the Ronin fixed blade models. I used to pocket carry a Ronin in a Kydex holster a lot.

Can you tell me the name of the maker? Or a link to a website/dealer?

So very, very late to this thread. I am not in any way trying to dissuade anyone from a HITS--in fact, I think I totally need one myself. Rather, just taking the presented opportunity to share a little bit of knife p0rn, because; knives:

My current favorite fixed EDC, the alfa knife "battlefield box cutter"

Goes great with my pseudo-Janich aspirations!

Nice box cutter

I've been looking for a knife similar to yours.
