BMW F800GS, southern coast of Iceland. Stout bike. Ugly as sin. The scenery was way better looking.

The only picture I have would violate forum policy. And most people tend to be distracted by the lingerie-clad blonde, and not even notice the bike.

This was a few years ago (is that what you call the early 80's?). '47 Harley, which I rebuilt a couple times. I put S&S 80" flywheels in it, S&S Super carb, S grind Andrews cam, close ratio Andrews gears in the trans, and ran a primary belt drive for a while. It was ported, balanced and otherwise slicked up, but still was handicapped compared to the later Shovelhead motors. Still was a blast to ride. Rode it cross country several times, and went pretty much everywhere it was possible to go, and some places that those faint of heart claimed "road" bikes weren't supposed to go. My longest day with the hardtail frame was 1000 miles of a 1400 mile trip. It lived in a Panhead swingarm frame most of the time I had it, and I ran it as a hand shift a year or two. Foot shift is the way to go. I spent a good part of a couple years roaming around, being semi-nomadic, living off the bike for a while. I shot the deer with my 4" 29. I was still in my sleeping bag when I saw it and made the shot.

Seriously, you can do better. It looks good from a distance...but don't get too close. Bought it for $500 several years ago, it was pieced together out '82 and '83 parts, took some time and $$$ to get it close to nice. Still has the '82, 85mph speedo. Runs good though, and it's tight.
I raced this '82 for several years:

Have a buddy that just sold his flawless, blue '83 1100E, that he bought new. All kinds of mods...two sets of body works. $3K
You can see it here (http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=219167).

Well, as this is a gun forum, I figured this would keep it on topic for the time being.

This particular bike was recently replaced by a new, 2014 model and I've just realized I do not have any pictures of it at the range!

Looks like I've got a project for the weekend!

2013 HD Switchback

For our 10 year anniversary, bought the wife and I one each of these. Her's is red. After putting in stiffer forks springs, Gold Valve Emulators, new shocks, Corbin seat, new handlebars (not sold on these and will be going to drag bars in the very near future) and a Stage 1 setup, it's getting close. Just got a new Predator engine mount that's going in to firm up handling.

This reminded me of something I saw recently. A guy with a Beemer with sidecar and his dog, living pretty much on the road the past 8 or 9 years. Was pretty interesting reading about him.

Thanks! I like it a ton more than my previous 80's vintage K75, but I'm still getting adjusted to the step down from 140+ RWHP to about 90. Good torque though. And I love the front suspension.

I ride a friend's K1200RS occasionally and prefer it to this one, but, I'm not complaining.

Yes sir! I assume the s1000r is still treating you well?

Here it is as I'm about to leave for Austin and the COTA round of the 2016 MotoGP season. ~900 miles of riding coming off of being too sick to stand the day before. My buddy manged to crash his sv650 about 5 corners into the first fun road we were riding on down in Austin, and rented a cbr300 for the remainder of the weekend. We still had fun.

My current project is a 1983 Yamaha XVZ12TK Venture, the original Yammer liquid cooled V4 that became the heart and soul of the V-Max and the Royal Star Venture series. I just picked her up a few months ago and she needs some more work over the winter(rebuild the carbs and an after market TCI unit) but what a solid highway bike! I was also extremely surprised at her low speed handling and she's rock solid up to and past 100MPH

What speed would that bike do?

I used to want to build a Harley Knucklehead for speed to see what could be gotten out of one. I rode a 47 for several years, cross country many times, and all around Az.

Malamute, the owner, on the left in the orange shirt, built the machine but had never raced it himself. He heard the request for a volunteer bike and after talking with the director and my daughter and letting her try the machine, agreed for the run. It took almost all day for the novice requirements to be satisfied. She only clocked 99.xxx mph on one run. That put her in the record book for the class and fuel used.
That was the start and finish of her bike experience.

Malamute

Must have been quite a fun experience for her.

Im guessing in whatever class it may require, the bike is capable of super-scary level speeds.

I think theres an elevation penalty at the Flats right off the bat isn't there? Not as much air to breathe as sea level.

76 I believe. My dad bought DG's in the late 80's for it so I'll at least do that. My plan was to half cafe it without making it look stupid and then go from there. Flat bars, not clip-ons, etc. Since it's a two stroke I'd guess that it'll be easy to get going from a full strip so I'm likely to grab all new innards and tear down on the bench and get it going, ride a little this year, and work on paint over winter.

Ive been out of riding since the late 80s. My primary interests were older harleys, my favorite being the 1947 Knucklehead I built from parts into a road bike and rode all over Az and back and forth across the country many times. No real interest in bikes in ages,.....until going in a friends shop to say Hi and BS a bit. he had a nice 1949 Panhead custom that caught my eye and sparked my interest. I quickly realized it was way out of my possible budget, not to mention the extra $2500 or so it would cost to add electric start to one that old, as with my health problems, i wasnt able to kick start one of these. But, the spark had started. He mentioned a somewhat rough 84 H-D Low Rider he had that he may be able to get me into if I was interested. I overcame my objection to such a new bike, and was finally able to get it worked out. I also figured id need a sidecar, I am somewhat concerned about my hip, back or shoulder spazzing when I stopped and falling over. A sidecar also allows the dog to go riding and adventuring. I cant ride very long at this point, but seem to be gaining on it a bit.

39376

I later located a used DMC brand sidecar, I dont have all the hardware to attach it yet, hopefully this summer I can get it completed. The sidecar gives quite a lot of room to carry tons of junk when out, or make short shopping trips for groceries or whatever. I had a receiver hitch added to the back of the sidecar frame, it already had one in the front. It will allow an ATV winch to be used, or tow a small motorcycle camp or cargo trailer.

39378

In studying about sidecars, I quickly learned that sidecars and dogs seemed like a match made in heaven. I was repeatedly referred to the advrider forum to learn about sidecars, and found a 140-some page thread on pictures of dogs and sidecars.

Random happy adventure dog picture from the net

39379

I cant get out and hike now like I used to, and have been wanting something i can do outside with the dog. Riding and exploring dirt roads in Az and other places sounds like a good way to be outside and doing fun stuff that the dog can also do.

Hoping to get to do some of this before long.

Thanks.

Yes, you steer it, and lean your body weight into the corners some. Braking tends to pull left somewhat, power tends to pull right somewhat. If you have a brake on the car it negates the braking pull to the left somewhat. Im just getting started getting used to it but its been fun. It needs a little fine tuning on adjustments, but its rideable and no major issues so far.

They also told me that they refused to work on them).

It appears that my picture that was in this post has disappeared. I see nothing in the original post. I suspect it was a victim of the Great Photobucket Massacre of several years ago.

Here it is again for general amusement. Loaded here, it should stay put this time. Evidence of my misspent youth.

Indeed. 2006.
The previous owner wanted a bigger bike, but could not afford one, so he had a bit of engine work. Bored to almost 980cc.
Definitely needs a taller top gear, 70+ gets a bit buzzy. No issues with the suspension so far, mileage at just over 17k.

I initially lowered the gearing on my FZ-1, thinking like the dumb kid I think I still am (in real life, I am 62...). Then one day I realized this was just causing me to shift between corners when I really wouldn't need to, so I raised the gearing, and am glad I did.

I don't have any seat time in the FE501 but it looks much more off-road to me than the 610, which I did take on a test ride a while back. Liked it a lot, but, I don't get off road much here and it too light for the blowy Texas highways. I would have bought it if I lived in Colorado...

I had a Mean Streak 1500, which is basically a gussied up Vulcan. The power was good- torquey and strong tip in pull, but a touch slow reving. It really liked removing the factory exhaust and replacing with a quality 2-1. It also would have been well served by a 6th gear. Existing gears were well spaced and I wouldn’t want to do the equivalent of smaller rear sprockets as first was perfect.

I lusted after these when they came out in 2000. Went to my hometown Honda dealer and shot the bull a lot that year. I remember the salesman named Kevin Dunn would chat with me.

In 2001, a week after I got a real job, I went back home and bought an RC51 from Kevin. I think I got $200 off MSRP and it was something like $11,700 out the door. It started raining as I rode out and I stalled it leaving the parking lot. First gear was pretty tall compared to my previous CB-1 (400cc). Ooops. Rode 12,000 miles the first year I owned it and it was mostly fun riding, not commuting.

At the time I was driving a 1973 Super Beetle and all my stuff could fit into that car. I slept on an air mattress. I had no real furniture. Not even a chair in my apartment. Every night I rolled this thing into my living room since I lived in the cheapest apartments I could find. I did oil changes in there as well. Land lord was not amused but I think she liked me because I paid the rent on-time.

Yes, she was a heavy pig, relatively speaking. The pictured Jardine 2-1 exhaust made a big weight difference, something like 20 lbs lighter than the stock 2-1-2 pipes. Other than some internal fork work/front ride height (to make sag, long story but Honda set these up with too much sag), it was stock.

Then I touched the kick stand in T3 at Willow Springs and went off. And thats when my club racing began!

Nowadays I have no motorcycles. Stupidly sold a street bike YZFR6 in 2012 or so and the wife was like, that was the last bike you are ever going to own! D'oh. Hopefully she softens... a KTM RC 390 can barely break a ton!

Switched to dirt in 2020 by trading in my Aprilia Tuono for a Husky FE350. Too many people on the mountain roads I liked to ride at a *spirited* pace, and I knew I wouldn't be able to make enough trackdays to keep my skills where I wanted them, so knobbies and a single cylinder it was.

I thought I'd be pretty good right from the get go given I was a solid B Group trackday rider and am quite handy on a mountain bike, but it was not to be. Finally getting some speed and flow now after sticking through some frustration.

Took the Vulcan off the road November 2nd, and winterized it, only to have 70° weather follow.
Before I put it back on the road in the spring, plan on doing some cosmetic upgrades, a valve adjustment and possibly a new seat.
While at times I lust after an Indian or Harley, this bike is really all I need.
Just turned 18k this summer.

I liked Rampart when I lived in Colorado. It can get a little crazy on the weekends but it is a good time if you get away from the main areas.

I figured out a 30-40 mile route that lets me rarely see others even on weekends. I used to be down on rampart, especially with the anti-grip decomposed granite that seems to accumulate in turns, but it's made me a better rider when it comes to front end feel and I love having so many trails within an hour of my house.
