View Full Version : Buckleless belt?

In my endless quest to comfortably carry in a traditional kilt, I was thinking of experimenting with a buckleless belt - the kind worn under a war belt type setup maybe? Anyway, the thought was to wear said buckless belt with my pistol on it (A/IWB) and then put the traditional kilt belt over that.

Who makes a belt like that? Any of them I should stay away from?

I frequently wear a Volund Gearworks G-hook belt that I had made with a 1" band of loop velcro on the outer surface. My outer gun/mag-pouch belt (also from VGW, with a Cobra buckle instead of a G-hook) goes right on over the top of it.

Wearing it right now with shorts and a JMCK AIWB holster. Great belt.

+1 for the Atlas. It's my ED Belt. Sounds like it could fit the OP's needs.
+Another for him doing custom stuff.

Not to mention wicked-fast turnaround. I recently needed a custom belt in a hurry and Matt had it built and shipped out via Priority Mail 4 days later. Including a weekend.

Love my Volund Gearworks Atlas with G-Hook. Great product, and great customer service from Matt. I'll probably order another one soon. It is the best belt I've had to date, and perfect for AIWB. Gun at 1230 and reload IWB at 11.

I've bought almost ten belts from VGW. GREAT company.

I've also been rocking the Atlas Belt with G Hook from Volund Gear Works. I was lucky enough to win one from a Ballistic Radio contest - I probably wouldn't have tried one of these on my own. I'm very happy with how secure and low profile it is.

I have three atlas belts, two Kryptek and an all black I wear for work every day.

Another satisfied customer here. Mine's a couple of years old, gets worn 6 days a week, and looks almost new.

Matt's good people.

Pics? Another vote for Matt,I have 4 of his belts and he's making me another one soon.

How about this -- I'll bump the review of the VGW belts to the top of the list and get it done tonight, complete with pictures.

In my endless quest to comfortably carry in a traditional kilt, ...
Since you're being traditional, you should carry a brace of these:

Belt clip standard, and I read somewhere that right-and-left pairs were common...

Crossbreed makes awesome buckle-less leather belts.

Boy you guys really like VGW belts... Of course it still has a hard metal buckle, which everyone except Trevor and Jay seemed to ignore.

Trevor would the G-hook be comfortable as an inner belt not running around at the range, but at a formal event? There's a certain amount of discomfort I'd allow while I play range commando that I probably wouldn't like at a dinner and dancing type of thing.

I've found the Safariland 030 and 4350 - both of which are buckleless. Two questions if anyone has used them:

1. Is the inner belt stiff enough to use as a pistol belt?

2. Is the outer belt too thick to wear under another belt?

What kind of formal event? I'm not sure there is any nylon belt I'd wear at a formal thing but if it's business casual maybe a "tactical" belt can enter the picture. I know at work lots of guys will wear North Face, Columbia, and Arc'teryx khakis and a nylon belt works fine.

The Ares Gear Aegis belt may be a little better for that though.... Closer to what looks like a normal belt and less like a gun belt.

If you're gonna wear a regular belt over it I would email Matt at Volund and have him make a single layer belt. Tell him why and I'm sure he can figure something out.

I've been looking for a belt like the Atlas, thanks for posting a review of it. I'm getting one. I'm a bit confused by their website ordering system. Are all the belts listed for sale black belts with differing colors of G-hooks. I'd like a coyote belt with a coyote G-hook. I don't really see that listed on their site.

Orion, ya gotta read the OP man. It's to go under a 2.25" leather kilt belt which cannot support a pistol.

Their web order system could be light years more hands-off (for them) than it is currently. It's not rocket surgery to put up a product configuration order system these days. I assume they have good reason (cost maybe? too many options?) for their current platform.

From the VGW web site

Want a color combo you don't see listed? No problem. Brown stitching on a black belt? A Foliage buckle on a Coyote belt? Add extra keeper loops? Need a Viking size? Line the belt with loop material to jibe with a war-belt? Sure, why not? Custom build options are available.....Click here for a quote on a custom option. (http://store.volundgearworks.com/index.php/contacts/)

Clicking the link takes you to a web-mail contact page.
What that tells me is.... They'll do most anything, just ask, they've decided not to try and code all the possible variations into their ordering platform, so, send us an email and we'll tell you yes and how much. They'll eventually get into trouble with a system like that, IMO, but, with 3-4 days turn around time today, it seems their "personal touch" is not yet an impediment to production.

It's strange how accustomed we've become to ordering stuff online without any personal contact that it feels "weird" having to reach out to a real person to place an order.... (not directed at anyone in particular, just pondering).

Well it seems fairly obviously this is just going to be a VGW love fest. I'll undo my subscription to my post and let you guys have at it. If anyone has any information that may be applicable to my original question - just PM me.

That's because it sounds like it will best fit your needs as defined.

And I'm suddenly reminded why I don't participate here nearly as much as I use to.

For a few months, I have ben wearing a buckle-less Velcro inner belt to a USPSA style rig, and it is now my favorite daily use belt with an appendix rig. Fast to put on, since you can add things to either side without fighting a buckle, low profile and very comfortable.

How about "no".

Look, if you wanna push your review of VGW and others want to debate the online shopping software for VGW and still others want to talk about available color combinations from VGW, that's fine - I'll just look for an answer to my question elsewhere.

You asked a question, you got a pretty consistent answer from people who usually disagree like it was there job. Good luck to you.

Actually, if you want to get technical, I got one pseudo answer (the G hook has a buckle and doesn't really fit the requirements) and after a whole lot of VGW love, received a suggestion for something that did for the requirements from Crossbreed.

I'm really happy everyone here agrees that VGW makes great belts. I have a specific need and asked for suggestions. The G hook belt really doesn't fit, and when I asked for clarity that was ignored. If you can't see why that would be frustrating then you and I don't have much more to say.

Perhaps you missed the part where I wore the Atlas G-Hook belt under another belt for a solid week of intensive shooting. If there's another real belt which would work equally well worn under a larger outer belt, I haven't seen it. The only thing lower-profile is a gamer-style all-Velcro inner belt.

You received a nearly unanimous set of recommendations for something that would work according to the description you provided, but (IMHO) threw a temper tantrum and said some fairly insulting things when the PF hive mind didn't produce whatever result actually you wanted but had not adequately described, for free.

For what it's worth I didn't respond to your question about the Atlas G-Hook because you'd already rage-quit the thread before I even saw it.

Best wishes and good luck in getting over whatever is bothering you.

I like cargo shorts. They're like a kilt with a center divider.
