I was out in the Texas Hill Country visiting family today and took some nifty pictures with the camera on my phone. Cold front blew in late Thursday evening and stayed cool all the way till today.

If I ever become lottery-stupid rich, I'm going to have a winter ranch in the Texas Hill Country, and a summer ranch in western Wyoming.

A couple of winters ago we had these all through the field after a windy night. Snow rollers.

A back in '11 when I still lived on the family farm we that this strange cloud front come through from the north. It was just an overcast day until this came through.

When it got over us you could see up in between the cloud layers. Pretty neat. We got a storm after the line in the sky passed us.

It's a tidal river that runs through my town. I got very lucky- that was a quick iPhone snap that turned out much better than anticipated. I happened to be headed by there after grabbing a bagel fresh out of the ovens at my favorite shop. Moments like that provide great perspective to working midnights.

Several years ago in late winter we got two storms within a couple days of each other, with high winds in between and during the second one. It hard packed the first snow then drifted the second. In the first pic I was standing on a drift, the drift in the pic was about 6' high. A neighbior plowed me out, I had to shovel some around my vehicles. A few days later the temp went up to the 50s and the snow was completely gone in about a week. The most snow Id seen in 25 years.

Rode out the hail storm - baseball sized in the car in our driveway. Clobbered San Antonio. Wife and I discussed cover vs. concealment watching the windshield crack. We just got to the end of our block when it hit. It also set off the burglar alarm in the house, glass breaking sensor. So I got out my pump gun and racked it at the Gods in the sky. Scared them away.

Watching those things bounce around you, off the car and hearing it on the roof of the car was a touch exciting.

Lots of damage in the area. Waiting for the insurance call. Neighbor had his car windows blown out. Another had his house windows gone and his siding looks like it was shot up. Splits and holes in hit. Roof is probably crapped out.

If you were out in it, you would have gotten clobbered. A bird statue in our yard has its head cracked open like a NFL lineman. Local HEB and WalMart had their roofs holed. Another house caught fire.

It's a miracle no reports of deaths from the storm yet. The hail would have split your head right open.

Nothing at our main house, wasn't able to see our rental property due to rain and being dark as heck. Note to self....2000 lumens light would be nice for Christmas.

When I was stationed in Colorado there was a local firm making something they called the Hail Veil. Worked great. Can't find it on the web anymore, but if they're still out there and you live where serious hail damager to your vehicle is a serious possibility I highly recommend one.

Glenn E. Meyer
04-14-2016, 11:58 AM
Well, the house and car deductibles take care of new guns and Rx glasses for the next century. The veil sounds good but I would have to have had a Star Fleet force field for this one. Glad we were close to the house and made it to the driveway and then took cover below the window line. It was like a vehicle class. Of course, shooting back wouldn't have helped. Bah!

2 horses, cause of deaths confirmed from hail strikes in San Antonio area. Couple of people reported injured but no specifics on the type or severity of injuries.

It was crazy, USAA reporting over 16k claims within the first day. Local news reporting close to 61k claims filed in city for home and auto. I'm curious to the total number after 1 month of incident.

The texture and depth of that bottom pic is super cool. It looks like Zeus' hand is gonna come reaching through the image.

Edit...the upper bottom pic. :p

Giving this thread a bump with some different "weather". I was digging around looking for some other video this morning and came across this from some avalanche control work the other year. A co-worker videoed our results on his phone. Figured it fit the thread mojo. ;)

Here are a couple topic related images too. The first is also from some control work; in this case to mitigate exposure on a frequently travelled County Road. The second is the aftermath of a skier triggered slide in a high traffic side-country area in our County. It carried the victim about 1800' vertical. The ship provides a little bit of scale.

So all winter thus far, this winter storms have swung wide around the Seattle-Tacoma area.

A few hours ago I woke up, the wife (who has developed into a real night owl since being laid off/retirement) tells me she has to watch DVDs because the satellite dish is covered with snow again. (I had gone outside and swept it clear last night.) When she came to bed an hour or so later she mentioned "We may be about to lose the birch tree in the backyard."

Well, now I really couldn't sleep...

That's after I grabbed the loppers and did some judicious trimming.

I think I need a real chainsaw, the 14" electric isn't going to cut it. So to speak.

From the driveway, out front:

The white streaks are more snow falling.

The hood of my wife's car, pop can for perspective:

EDIT TO ADD: *CRACK*CRACK*. Looks like we lost one or two limbs, including the one that hangs out over the side street, where all the parents idle while waiting for their kids at the school around the corner.

I have a friend who is at his sister's house in Seattle for his birthday. He said they got 12-14" there.

Officially, Seattle "only" got 7" or so, but the further east (i.e., closer to the mountains) you go, the more you get. Apparently it was "thundersnow", which they say means you'll get a heavy snow.

Power went out about 0700. I notified Puget Sound Energy, realized there was a down line in the middle of the street and called 911. (It was probably a phone line, but why take chances?)

Then I broke out my late father in law's large saw and a set of loppers and started clearing the branches that were blocking the road. 13698

Also shoveled maybe a third of the driveway when it started to snow again; the power came back on, so I took a shower and got acquainted with my new best friend, Mr. Heating pad.

(Also, I have some dash cam footage of th most amazing double rainbow we saw on the drive down here. If and when i figure out how t0 edit it, I'll post it here so you guys can tell me what it means...)

A double rainbow is completely normal. Whether or not you see the secondary rainbow just depends upon the conditions and the lighting. The second rainbow is located 10 degrees above the first and always fainter.

Note how in the primary rainbow the color is red on the inner to blue on the outer/upper band. The colors are reversed on the secondary rainbow. The area in between the rainbows is called Alexander's Dark Band. This is all pure physics (optics) and the phenomenons of reflection and refraction.

Had some pretty big hail last night. Thankfully it was mostly smaller and pretty short duration, and the vehicles were inside. Not too far away they got it a lot worse.

Could not get back in to edit my post above. I was in a hurry when I typed it and got the color order incorrect. But you can see from the pictures that the secondary rainbow has reverse color order.

I don't know how to post that particular video here, so follow the link to What Happens When Lightning Hits A River? (https://kost1035.iheart.com/content/2017-08-02-what-happens-when-lightning-hits-a-river-watch/)

It was impressive.

I went to the link, it wasnt being nice when I tried to replay the moment of the hit to see it again, so I went to youtube to see it,....and in the search results was a description of the video saying it was first posted online in 2012 by a demolition company in Finland or thereabouts, it was an example of an underwater explosion they did. :(

So you're saying I'm ignorant about what lightning does and fell for something too good to be true? ;-)

Well, it wouldn't be the first time :-)

Snopes calls it fake and has a photo of what I guess is detcord being set off:

BUMP!!

It has been quite a winter in our neck of the woods, yielding some of the most severe avalanche conditions our state has seen in decades. Locally, we just hit the 300" mark despite having a good 2 months of winter left. Some fun pics from this week...
