I get that's his April Fool's post. It's also the best thing he's ever written.

P.S. Five Guys is okay, but In-N-Out über alles!

As a California Refugee, whenever I'm withing a reasonable distance of In-N-Out, I make sure to stop. At least once. Sometimes twice.

In-n-Out is good food, but I don't get what the big deal is. Made a point to stop there when I visited LA. It was... a fast food hamburger... with acceptable fries.

Prices were a lot better than 5 Guys, at least.

What a shame , to see a place with such great things afflicted with such dumb gun laws.

I have an In N Out within walking distance to my place in Arizona, and when they built one in Irving, Texas where I had another home, I was able to sell my house in the socialist utopia and keep the two in places with good gun laws and In N Out. Five Guys is okay, but doesn't hold a candle to my beloved In N Out.

If going that sorts route even a mediocre steakhouse will likely have a solid burger.

I simply cannot understand folks who go to these places unless I merely live in an area where almost any small local joint serves a better burger and the rest of the country doesn't have this.

I'd bet the Vatican even has a better burger during lent than these places.

We are talking fast food Burgers here. We can ALL find some spectacular "bespoke" burgers in locations all over the country, or go hardcore and order a burger at a high end steakhouse. I am talking about $5 from the drive thru at 1:00AM in Barstow, CA. on my way back to Kalifornia from Lake Havasu burgers. I am talking about at our lunch break when we are on the range teaching goodness. I also have never in almost 50 years of eating them EVER gotten sick (unlike many places, In-N-Outs are consistently spotless). They always taste exactly the same, and unlike 5 guys, you really can't duplicate the taste. We had two places in the town I worked that I loved. Spike's that had Teriyaki and Avocado Burgers that were awesome (especially with a little chicken and rice bowl and potato salad), and a place that did these Pastrami stacked burgers that were to die for.......they just weren't things I could get anywhere else. That is the key to what the attraction is. You are thinking $3-4000 1911 burgers, and we are talking about "Glock Burgers".

Five Guys has two things that In n Out sorely lacks.

Bacon

Fresh Jalapenos

Not saying that In n Out isn't great (Animal Style medium rare with light spread please), but sometimes you just want some real heat with your burger.

OTOH In n Out has something that Five Guys sorely lacks, they will cook your burger to something other than cooked through.

This is news for me.

The family loves 5 guys. They're meh to me.
If I can get med-rare at In/Out, I'll make a point to try it.
There's two I/O's nearby, each about 15 minutes in different directions. Never been.
If I'm in the mood for a burger, I go to the supermarket and make it myself, which usually turns into "buy a steak" for a few bucks more.

Now if White Castle was nearby.....

Now that's funny!

The single advantage I have moving back to where I am in Northern California is that I have a "Burger Utopia"
In two miles from me I have InO, 5G, Habit, Red Robin and Smash Burger that I can remember off the top of my head.

BTW, at InO it's occasionally nice to order a plain Double Double with just Beef, Cheese and Bun for a pseudo grilled cheese.

Now if White Castle was nearby.....

Ugh, horrible burgers.

I remember people raving about White Castle, so during Bianchi Cup a couple of years ago I went and got my first couple (since they are small they come in sets). Ugh, it was grease on a bun. I might as well just have just opened up a can of Crisco and taken a spoon to it.

Now Whataburger, it may not be the best burger in the world, but I have memories behind it. I used to go down to Corpus to see my grandparents, and my grandfather would take me fishing. By the time we got done it was lunch time we would stop at Whataburger on the way home.

As Shenaniguns said, one of the upsides of living in NorCal is that it's a food utopia. FFS we even have a Chik-Fil-A now, something I thought would never happen.

I've tried to love InO, I really have, but their burgers are always on the ragged edge of overcooked. If you don't finish it within 3 min seconds of getting it, you're gonna be chewing some cardboard. If the fries have time to cool off you might as well just chuck them. Also: American cheese only. Gross.

That's not to say that I won't eat there every so often, because there's an In N Out just down the road from my Crossfit gym. I'll get a 3x0 mustard/lettuce/extra tomato and wolf it down before it expires. I just can't say that it's anything but "meh".

Five Guys has them beat hands down. The burgers are thicker and so do not suffer the cardboard effects of the InO wafer-burgers. Their double burger with bacon and BBQ sauce is up there with the Wendy's double as one of my favorite fast food burgers. I happen to think their fries are pretty good too, but fries aren't part of my meal plan so I just steal a few from my kids when we go.

I just wish one of the major burger chains would figure out that people like cheddar cheese.

I don't think mine comes to that much but I've never been there solo and paid attention to just my part.

I'm going to admit my weird here though and say $15-20 is fast approaching the "no meal is worth this" amount for me. It's just food. Life's too short to eat nasty crap, but it's also too short to sit around blowing time and money eating or obsessing over fine food. Okay, that's is ridiculous.. I think my plain-jane burger there is 7.99 and comes with the bottomless fries. I'm right at 10 something with a drink. I think geography is playing a role though because I'm looking at the online local menu and the highest burger listed here is $10.99.

Jebus, that's more than Petite Chou (http://petitechoubistro.com/menus/)'s burger with frites. (And they cook their hipster foodie fries in friggin' duck fat. I generally don't like fries all that much, but I put a hurtin' on those.)

I'm starting to suspect that 5G burgers aren't made the same everywhere, based on the comments I'm seeing here. At the two Bay Area locations I've visited, the burgers have each been about twice the thickness of an In-N-Out burger.

Agree that 5 Guys jacks you on the prices for drinks and fries. When it's just me, not a problem because I don't eat fries and I have a water bottle with me. When I'm with the kids they share the fries -- a "small" is plenty for everyone. Even if I get a drink it's still in the $8-and-change range, which unfortunately is the going price for any kind of decent burger and a drink where I live.

You still have to prep it, but it ain't even close to cooking, and you drink, rather than eat. Still gotta excrete though.

Another thing that helps with food prep, but makes amazing food, is sous vide. I got mine about a month ago, and seriously, it's a game changer. Perfect pork chops/chicken breasts/steaks/etc. with minimal effort.

Jebus, that's more than Petite Chou (http://petitechoubistro.com/menus/)'s burger with frites. (And they cook their hipster foodie fries in friggin' duck fat. I generally don't like fries all that much, but I put a hurtin' on those.)

I don't have my In -N-Out receipt, but a meal two days before at the Hollywood Johnny Rockets ran me $16.59 .

Behold, government induced inflation.

Because clearly these burger prices have nothing to do with a shortage of beef and correspondingly higher food costs.

Well, that and the fact that menus in California are priced in inflated Lira and Reichsmarks (http://booksbikesboomsticks.blogspot.com/2008/10/bail-out-who.html). ;)

Fresh Jalapenos

Not saying that In n Out isn't great (Animal Style medium rare with light spread please), but sometimes you just want some real heat with your burger.

In N Out has chiles and you can get chopped chiles on your burger as well. I usually get a 3X3, animal style, toasted bun, chopped chiles and occasionally a 4X4 or protein style.

I'll be happy when they invent those jetsons-esque food pills so we never have to "eat" and yet are always fully nourished. Think of the time we'd save if we didn't have to cook, eat, or poop!

That sounds like a miserable existence!

Those are pickled sport peppers, they don't compare to fresh jalapenos.

Recently HEB has prime strip steaks for only $2 more than choice. I got one, and it has been a very long time since I've had a prime steak, I forgot how good they are.

Hot, yellow chili peppers it says on the package. They are pickled, but they're definitely not pickled sport peppers, which are serrano chiles. They're not jalapeņos either, but they are spicy, and they are good. You said you wanted heat with your burger, just trying to help.

If I want heat, I can just go to Five Guys or Whataburger (though they use pickled jalapenos).

That would require me to go up north. There are too many Northerners up north. :p

Yeah, I like them too...........but what time is their drive through open till?

This is why I consider the "Whataburger" vs. "In-N-Out" argument to be more valid..........although stupid, because In-N-Out is clearly better, and the locations MUCH cleaner.

When I was getting ready to move up here, I was all excited to be moving to the home of the Indy 1500, which should be a station of the cross for gun nuts.

"Ooh!" I said to Gunsmith Bob back in Knoxville, "Do you know what they have up in Indy?"

"Millions of Yankees?" he replied. :D

Bob and I would get along well.

I was going to say Yankees, but Mid-westerners tend to get offended when you call them Yankees. So I reserve that term for those north of the Mason-Dixon Line, and for people from Maryland (yes I know y'all get offended, but if your government stopped acting like Yankees then I wouldn't call you Yankees).

In-n-Out is good food, but I don't get what the big deal is. Made a point to stop there when I visited LA. It was... a fast food hamburger... with acceptable fries.

Prices were a lot better than 5 Guys, at least.
Agreed. Prices were better, but I sure didn't think the food was better.

Now Whataburger, it may not be the best burger in the world, but I have memories behind it. I used to go down to Corpus to see my grandparents, and my grandfather would take me fishing. By the time we got done it was lunch time we would stop at Whataburger on the way home.

I'm back in Corpus. Give me a shout next time you come down and we'll meet up somewhere.

I was just down there for the Texas State Steel Championships in October. Probably won't be back there until this years match.

The guy at the rental car return tried to get me arrested.
