Is that an M40 USMC stock?Yea, it was one of the USMC trade in stocks, offered through MCM.

I need to get out with you next time you shoot long range out here.I used to go to Quantico for the F class matches, but family time pushed it to the back burner. I let my membership lapse.

While I wouldnt consider this a "precision" build by any means, I planned this one to be a good compromise between accuracy and light weight. This will be one of my work guns.

Finally got it all together....

Parts:
*Noveske 16" 1/7 twist Lightweight profile stainless Middy
*Noveske M4 receiver
*Troy 13.8" TRX "Alpha" BattleRail with built-in flip-up front sight
*WMD Guns NiB-X bolt carrier group
*BattleComp 2.0

Pics:
http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/6811/20111104115328.jpg

In the sweat shop: (*Disclaimer:The pic below was somewhat staged. I used the proper receiver block shown in the background to torque the barrel nut on. I was setting it up to install the Troy TRX with the PRI block it is mounted on in the pic)

Done!:
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/1446/20111105013417.jpg

How it will pretty much be configured. Still need a MagPul RSA and a IWC handstop for the Troy TRX Alpha:
http://img804.imageshack.us/img804/2816/20111105015026.jpg

I hope to make it out to the range tomorrow morning to check for function with a few hundred rounds. I have some ASYM 75gr Match ammo on the way to zero it with next week. I will report back with function & accuracy results....

Pretty simple AR build... I cut off the front sight post since it was getting in the way of the optic... I didn't see any point in paying an extra $70+ for a gas block when I could accomplish the same thing in 5 minutes with a Dremel tool:) I'll replace it some day with a folding front sight / gas block combo.

I was pretty impressed with the 74SU's a few years back while working with some former Soviet republic commando's. Terminal ballistics are also pretty impressive when you look at the round, barrel length, etc. They do damage far beyond their stature.

And you bet that is a long gun. Anything longer than a pistol is a long gun in my book. If I didn't have enough SBR's, a 74SU imitation would be high on my list. Nice looking carbine.

I have a few additions, but lost the pics due to a smashed laptop...........maybe in a couple of weeks I'll throw an update on.

Bottom one has been the HD/game/go-to-school gun for, like, the past four years. Top one's the panic build I started throwing together in December on an already-finished lower I had lying around. It's got a lot of stuff on it that I've been meaning to try out, so it's kinda a work-in-progress.

Tam, how do you like the TLR-1 HP? I've heard that it throws a very tight beam a long way. Do you find it functional on a GP carbine?

It literally just replaced the TLR-1S that was on the gun earlier this winter, so I haven't got it outside in the dark to see if its claims of 50% more downrange voodoo are accurate. (I was going to buy another TLR-1S for a pistol, but moved the carbine's light over to the pistol and replaced it with this instead; since the controls are identical, it seemed a no-brainer.) It sure seems to be "the same but more" than the smaller light, but that's all been close-range and indoor so far.

I've been wondering this for a few weeks - why that choice of color scheme KP? Just wondering what the rationale was for what to me seems like an unorthodox paint color/scheme.

And big props if the reasoning is "because it matches red Georgia clay!". :D

Pretty much lol, I live and work in the piedmont region and brown and dark green does well and is abundant in nature out here. Plus if you look at animals in nature and especially in this region you see how prevalent brown is as a coat color and they've been playing the blend in game with life or death chances for a long time.

Nope. They do not.

Those are plenty beautiful in their own right. I'm currently eyeballing a Spencer carbine, a British Royal Navy Flintlock from 1775, if I can convince the other parties involved, a 1779 brass barreled Dutch Blunderbus. Gonna be an expensive year.

My backyard is literally the Black Hills. My dogs even like to do their business in the national forest. Anyway, I have a mountain lion tag and today was the first day I went out to try and fill it. I found this clearing about 3 miles from my house that had several old tracks. I decided to take a stop and take a pic of my gear: Ruger American Rifle in .30-06 (topped with a Weaver Grand Slam 2-8x36 scope), Ruger LCR in .38 Special +P, HK45, Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon with various sundries for my hike/hunt.

No luck on the cat yet. Let's see if I can bag one before I deploy.

Not sure if this belongs here or in the "cold weather" thread. Found a spot in the hills by my house with clear shooting to 300+ yd. It wasn't exactly pretty (20* is not the ideal conditions to really take your time and settle into a good NPA) but he turned out some good 2-3 MOA groups when he took his time.

ETA...........

This poor critter was put to hard use in April for a 2 day sage rat trip in SE Oregon. It digested about 1200 rounds during those two days. But, you tend to get what you pay for. It went tango uniform, down hard about 30 minutes prior to the end of day 2. Currently at Remington awaiting warranty repair, since the chamber was a little large to begin with, causing multiple split casings from the get go. Finally gave up the ghost when (as best as I can figure it) another split case, created excessive gas escape/loss, resulting in not enough ass to move the projo out of the barrel, next round caused a kiboom. A .17 HMR doesn't really KaBoom, but it was noticeable. Still, it bagged a good 500-600 rats before it bit the dust.

And hey, maybe they will honor the warranty and replace/repair it?

In other news.........my airbrushing skills are getting no better than they were when I started!

I'll post up the 9mm pistol turned SBR build once it is complete.........but between the Form 1 (that I screwed up and awaiting ATF's nice letter letting me know I forgot a piece of paperwork), and the Form 4 for the suppressor............I am not going on a breath hold until it is done......just gonna wait patiently.

Patience is not my strong suit. Elected to go with the Sig Brace, and will pistol my bad boy AR 9mm thingy next week!

Looking good Sean!

Remingtons QC seems to be hit and miss these days. Hopefully they will make it right for you.

It is Marlin branded, but after the initial email, all others have come from Remington. I stopped following which evil empire took over which manufacturer on October 6th 2013.

With the 700 series Remy's, or 870's I don't much care about any issues out of the box......I can fix most of those issues myself by replacing parts I was going to anyway, or with the help of a few talented machinist/engineer/100lb head friends. But I really just shoot the things, and tinkering on them is simply my distraction from my boring day to day life.

I didn't/don't honestly expect them to send an RMA, or even accept it as warranty work, but it will be nice if they do repair/replace and don't charge me for it.

Still, if they don't.........I figure I got my $189.00 worth out of it...........

Finally pieced together a carbine. It's kinda of a budget build utilizing coupon and equipment exchange deals. Never mind the Primary Arms dot, as funds allow it'll get replaced with a more suitable Aimpoint.

Modified Remington 1187. It started off as a 26 inch barrel field gun that sat forgotten in the back of the safe, transformed into something entirely different that sits in front of the safe. It runs the loads pictured perfectly.

^^I absolutely LOVE that shotgun! I first saw pics of it a year or so ago on a different forum (M4C maybe?) and fell it love. I did something similar with my Benelli M1, but found the X300 in that position to be detrimental to my thumb, so I switched to a Surefire forend. Overall still a fantastic and fun to shoot gun! (Pics show the G2X/Gear Sector that came before the X300 that came before the Surefire forend).

@ ASH556 yes it was on M4C a year or so ago IIRC.

@ NH Shooter Bravo Zulu is all I can say. It seems I have an 1187 that could use the same treatment if I don't buy a Berreta 1301T first.

Thanks for the kudos, and I like the clean, functional utility of the Benelli!

I purchased the 1187 new about 15 years ago, used it to bust clays with friends for a few years and then it sat unused. It was a fun project and with the barrel cut to 18-3/4" and an inch taken off the stock, it handles altogether differently. Here is the complete list of mods;

- 26" pressure-compensated barrel shortened to 18-3/4 inches and re-installed the RemChokes
- HiViz CompSight PM1002 - Competition Shotgun Sight (same as used on the 1100 Tac4)
- Cut the stock down to 13” LOP and re-installed the original Remington butt pad
- Choate 2-shot magazine extension
- Wolff magazine spring
- Delrin follower
- Dave’s Metal Works Easyloader
- Dave's Metal Works bolt knob
- Vang Comp dome button safety
- CDM Gear BMT mount with rail (for X300) and QR sling swivel
- G,G&G rear sing attachment

It cycles the reduced recoil Fed loads perfectly and hits within an inch or two of POA at 50 yards with slugs. The support thumb operation of the X300 works OK for me, and at night the X300 illuminates the FO front sight as well, making it very easy to pick up.

I also have an 1187P that I purchased recently, in this photo you can see the shortened stock of the "1187 HD Premier";

I always wanted a Remington 700P and a few years ago, decided to get going with a new project to fulfill that mission.

I started with a new 700 TAC SPS (Shitty Plastic Stock) as the base. Before firing a shot, the stock with replaced with a B&C 2958 and the awful stock trigger was replaced with a Timney 510. I mounted a SWFA SS HD 10X42 in Seekins low rings, attached to a Leupold 15 MOA steel based bedded to the receiver. Using Federal Gold Metal Match factory 168 loads, the rifle shot consistently .7 MOA or better, with sub .5 MOA groups becoming more of the norm the more I shot it. Here was my best group of 5 shots @ 100 yards on bags;

http://www.canonshooter.com/photos2/700target-4.jpg

Over this past winter, I made some tweaks to the set up;

1. Installed a Tac-Pro cheek riser to get perfect eye-to-scope alignment
2. Did a rattle can paint job on the formerly all-black stock
3. Properly adjusted the ocular to render the reticle razor sharp (duh!)
4. Dropped the trigger pull weight to 2.1 pounds
5. Replaced the flimsy stock cast bottom metal with a steel unit, and bedded it to the stock
6. Added a sunshade
7. Added zero stops
8. Purchased a Mountain Shooter Sling (use it on my Savage MKll .22 as well)

I haven't shot it with the tweaks yet, but will be soon. I also need to get back into reloading. ;-)

I love pump actions. The sound and intimidation factor of racking the slide is something I've loved since I shot my first one 25 years ago. I know its not that fastest, but its like an old lever action... its got personality!

It barely qualifies as a "long" gun at 31.5" long, but how about a TC Encore in 35 Whelen with a 17" MGM barrel:

http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g405/allencb/20150515_085649_zpsryg9hxzg.jpg

I thought I would lose a lot with that short barrel, but 200gr Core-Lokts do 2554fps, losing only 125fps over Remington's 24" factory barrel.

Hopefully reloading can close the gap even more. I'd like to get 250s up to about 2400fps.

https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=1246

ordered somewhere else, but I got the three panel kit and a solo hand stop.

Do those KAC sights lock when up or are they more like the Magpul Pros and held up by friction?

friction, you can move them up or down, they "click" into place but require no push button or lever to move them other than force.

Thanks.

Do they stay in place well when deployed and the rifle is shot a lot?

I'm asking because I like that they can be adjusted without a front sight tool (it just makes things easier), but I like to keep my front sight up.

And then you need to write a review in the NFA section or link to one where you discuss POI shift, gas to the face, etc. Get on it!

I have a class (or two) coming up so I'll do it after.

POI Shift at 50y and in is non-existent and gas to face is substantial with this setup.

Did you get a BCM charging handle with the lip that helps prevent gas to the face? How about the DIY silicone fix?

PWS made the BCM standard a few years ago. PWS made their own until 2011. I had one on my PWS upper I had a few moons ago it was a little more angled and sharper than the BCM.

Lots of wood rot, originally chambered in 8X57S, but during the cleanup I decided to rebarrel it in 6.5X55 as the original bore was crap. You just can't believe how great this thing balances and points. The set trigger releases at under 2 lbs; just a beautifully made and handling rifle:

I've always wanted a Type M. Super hard to find. I peruse gunbroker regularly just to look at the ones who come around for sale every once in a blue moon.

You are incredibly lucky to have that given to you. Excellent choice on 6.5 as well. That's pretty much my dream rifle....I might even offer to buy it once I have the money.

I'm curious too. I suppose he's implying that your pistol is a psuedo-SBR and was intended to skirt the NFA stuff. It sort of looks that way because of the scope, which I assume would require you to shoulder the brace and not use it on your forearm. Just guessing.

Or it's a setup that's slapped together for a photo, since people do that type of thing...
