Every time I try to save up for a Sharps life makes lemons from my lemonade. I'm beginning to think the fates don't want me to have one. For me, the only thing cooler than a Sharps is a fine double rifle.

Oh dear Lord. I had a killer Remington Rolling Block I let go for a Lt. Who was very good to me at my old agency. I was just on the Shiloh site the other night. I love old single shots. My pet Martini Henry converted to a 45-70 target gun is a tack driver. There is just something wonderful about the old big boomers.

Oh, My!

I too love the old single shots. I do miss the 1879 Remington Spanish contract rifle, though the chamber was oversize and tended to split brass. I have fond memories of a shooting session one afternoon with a now-departed friend, me with the Rolling Block, him with his Mk II Martini-Henry rifle, shooting at 100 yard stakes with a steak dinner at stake! Luckily for my wallet, it was a tie, and we never had a rematch. (He was 10 times the rifleman I am, and about 100x the eater and especially, drinker.)

Figured I'd post here rather than muck up the scout rifle thread further.

I was at the gun store today picking up a couple milsurps I had ordered and was browsing and saw a Sporterized Mauser, still in the original 8mm, with a LER scope and a door in the butt stock to hold extra shells. Except it didn't have irons and the barrel was at 22 or 24". I didn't have another $500 to spend or I would have seriously considered either it or the Savage 99e in .243winchester.

One of those two rifles should be on layaway. Just saying. One of them would be had I visited that store today.

You have a point. I think the Mauser may have been a yugo because I think I remember it having a flat on the inside of the bolt knob. Still, it was totally refinished so $500 isn't unreasonable. I should go back.

Thanks a lot, Duelist. You just ultimately cost me $1000. :D Turns out that particular gun store will let you put two guns on lay-away and the very very pretty woman working the counter brought up a good point when she said I shouldn't fret over which to get and just get both. Although the fact that she could have talked me into a Hi-Point doesn't matter because I walked in there planning to ask about putting them both on lay-away anyway.

Turns out the Mauser is a legit Gewehr 98 but the collector value is gone now. Burris 2.75 LER scope on a Burris mount, matte finish, and custom stock. Slick action and good bore.

Just picked them up today.

I really need to stop dropping by gunshops. This old 870 Wingmaster was sitting on the used shelf for about 1/4 of the price of a new 870 Express. I pulled the 26" ribbed barrel and dropped an 18" barrel on it that I had sitting around.

Now it looks ready for business

Milled receiver, how do you like it?

What messing with AKs Ive done, the milled gun I shot was more accurate than the stamped guns. May have been a fluke, or just different quality of guns.

Liked the first one so much I sold off my yugos and got a second (rescued it actually). Super smooth. Great triggers.

My two newly SBR'd 6920's rebarreled with with 9" 300 BLK ones. I just need to get rid of the MOE grips and the one Mag Pul trigger guard for something different, slap an optic on them and I'll be calling it done, (I can't seem to decide). Now if my suppressor stamps would come in.

I can't wait to get my Omega 9K's on these things. They are going to be tinny and quiet.

I was originally going to run Omega's with the brakes but I opted to remove them and buy two 9k's which will be directly thread so I can keep as short as possible. I am going to run the omega on my scout probably, well once I get off my ass and find a way to mount it anyways.

600m rear sights?

Mike C,

600m rear sights?

Yes Sir, unconventional I know. Not to ramble but I haven't decided on an optic so my little experiment with irons is giving me the time I need to decide which way I want to go optics wise, even though its probably going to be a H2/T2 maybe a 12.9 MOA triangular reticle RMR so I can have holds to 250y without thinking about it. Presently I set 200 on the buis and am zeroed for 175 yards in conjunction with my preferred load the 110g Barnes TAC-TX. The Barnes chrono between 2115-2130fps from both of my barrels. The 175y zero keeps me within 5" of vertical dispersion out to 200y then I am -10" at 250y and -23" at 300y. Based on the preliminary math and what I've been able to verify on steel out to 300y, I should be able to run these guns out to 4-450y with come ups using the 600m buis. I have yet had the time to run to 400/450y but I will this week. I really want to keep the packages small, light, and quiet so I feel like throwing a variable scope on them is unnecessary added weight. If I can squeeze enough utility out to 200y with a red dot and have corrections out to 450y with irons I'll be happy with that. Recently I gave up 5.56 in flavor of running everything in .30 Cal. for logistical reasons. I know 300 blk isn't ideal but we've been doing more with less (5.56mm) for so long I'm not really sweating it. Besides it's not like I have to shoot people anymore anyways. For my purposes I'm pretty happy just ringing steel on a reduced ISPC target at 300y with a 9" barrel like it's child's play, that all while staying relatively quiet in an extremely compact package is all I could ask for.

SLG
11-05-2016, 06:44 PM
It is an unconventional choice, but that rear sight happens to be my favorite, and is on most of my AR's that have irons.

When I used to only have an Aimpoint as an optic, I ran the 600M BUIS, and if a shot was needed past 300, that was what I went to. Sounds like you think the same way about it. While I was overseas, we had a team attacked at very long range (indirect fire), and people were pretty quick to figure out how to run the 5.56 at crazy long distances after that. Cool sight.

SLG
11-05-2016, 06:46 PM
BTW, though I try not to pick on people, companies can certainly be fair game:-)

That rear sight just sitting there by itself made me think of the SA Saint ads. You know, the ones where they put the irons on in the wrong slot. Trying to one up HK I guess.

The KAC drum rears are money, ever since I've had them available to me it's been the same story as you, (on every damn gun). Similar experience to yours is what lead me down this road with irons. Everyone needs to know irons and how to run them well at distance for their rifle. Again, I know my choice is unconventional and I'd really love to be able to lob my pills at least to 600y but if I run out of elevation at 450y I'll just suck it up and find a workaround. Sucks the ACOG won't be viable but based on my velocities. Guess I'll be stuck with irons and a red dot. Old school is still cool right?

Yeah I really lucked into this one. Can you believe classic firearms wants $750 for one of these? Now I just need a Mas 49 or 49/56 to go with it. And a Lebel and a Berthier. And every other gun ever made.

Here are a few more pics. The colt folding front sight allows me to run the X300 at 12:00. It catches a little bit of the beam but there is still plenty of light to power over it and it works quiet well.

Some Christmas upgrades to my main squeeze

Larue 1.93 SPR mount replaced the LT 745 that came with the Nightforce when I got it. Tango Down BG 18 grip and a Magpul SL stock (stock let's the sling swivel lay right yay!). Last you can't see but Geissele's new Super 42 dual braided wire buffer spring and buffer (buffer was up weighted to an H2). Got the mounts switched out and the optic zeroed today.

Feels smooth and it is quite but my old set up was similar as it was an H2 but the stock colt spring well lubed. I only shot a little bit today, mostly benched so there is that too. What really sold me is the spring life and lack of length loss over the wear life, I watched the 20 minute YouTube video showing the engineering and testing and it intrigued me. I had been looking at going to a springco spring but then Bill worked his wizard magic skills again lol.

What's up with that levergun's barrel length? It looks long compared to the magazine.

It is a 20" barreled Win94ae Ranger. It is a budget rifle and one of the first of the angle eject series. They made them like that for a few years, then went back to the fill length. I bought it new in 1983 for $150, so I know it came that way.

This started out as a 26" Remington 700P in .223. I'm normally a fan of longer barrels, but I already have enough of that, so went short on this one.

I had it reamed to .223 Wylde and cut to 20" with an 11 degree crown. I put it in a spare Mcmillian A5 I had, and mounted a Nightforce 2.5-10X42 mil-dot in Nightforce rings and base. US Optics level, Timney 510, Atlas bipod.

It's gonna eat up all my cheaper ammo.

None at all. I can check, (Great) Uncle Bill kept is supposed to have kept pretty good records, but I'm not sure they survived him.

There are other markings that could be engraving or maybe other proof marks:

Sounds like a few excuses to me ;)

Sorta looks like F/ was too high and shutter speed was too low.

You can fit a foldable reflector in a backpack and cheap YONGNUO flash or two with some cheapy controllers you'll be good to go...

Plus you used a tripod (I hope) and that means you could have just held your breath and upper the shutter speed for a second or two.

This location I actually did have permission. I just didn't want anyone else that might be here to see me with the rifle.

From what I've been reading with Michigan law, having a firearm or not doesn't make a difference. Trespassing is trespassing, firearm or not.

Rem 700 SPS Tac .308
Hunter 700 stock with Arca-Swiss QD plate (for attachment to tripod)
SWFA 10X42HD with zero stops
Seekins rings on Leupold 15 MOA steel base
Timney trigger set to just under 3 lbs.

The rifle averages about .65 MOA - best group to date is .312 MOA with Hornady168 AMAX, worst is usually around .8 MOA. Her are some sample targets, all 5-shot groups at 100 yards on bags;

Here is my sorry old ass getting behind it and squeezing off a few rounds. Notice I've installed a brake;

Sentimental value, essentially. Yes, I've spent way more on that gun over time than someone should.
It was the first gun I ever bought myself. Walked in when I turned 21, saw what looked like an AK (it was in stock "sporter" form) in a caliber I recognized. It was only $199 so I grabbed it.

Yeah, sorry. The Specwar is on my pack. There's a Silencerco ASR Blast Shield on the muzzle.

As a side note, this is the first rifle of many I've owned that exhibits zero POI shift suppressed/unsuppressed. I'm pretty stoked about that.

Not that I'm inclined to shoot it unsuppressed again, it makes a big noise. Lol

Carbine length as far as I know. Haven't been getting out with it much lately but I plan on doing so in the next week or two. Other than a trip back to the mother ship for an out of spec bolt, no issues to report.

I just checked the website and it says it's midlength. The things is that there are no specific specs, as far as I know, for what midlength is supposed to be (size of gas port etc..). All I know is that BCM says to use full power ammo (full power .223 or only 5.56?, BCM didn't say) in their 14.5" midlength guns, it may very well be that S&W engineered it differently from BCM. IN any case, I'm glad to hear it's worked for you since this particular model always catches my eye.

I must be missing something, T. I didn't notice it in the specs (https://www.smith-wesson.com/firearms/mp-15-ts) currently listed.
That said, I know that they've posted incorrect info on their site previously per their representatives admitting such online. (Barrel steel was one such error.)

I remember when I purchased the rifle it was described as a carbine length system...whereas their Magpul accoutered M&P offering was touted as having the mid-length system. In any case, it is what it is and has what it has and there's nothing I can do about it now. Now, don't jinx me.

ETA: I called S&W and the rep said mid-length but I am awaiting a call back from their "expert". So, I'll report back once I hear from him.

So much friggin' misinformation online, even from the horse's mouth. Sigh.

There's a deputy I run into from time to time whose department in NC issues the TS as their patrol rifle. If I see him online I'll try to see if he has any further info on the matter. (He's an instructor as well, so may have some additional info.)

It must be I who is missing something. I pulled up the page last night and I could swear I saw midlength written somewhere. I do remember that on the old version of that page it did say midlength and that the photo (same as the one in the modern page) shows a gas block at midlength distance. But you're right, they could easily have changed the specs and not updated the specs or photos.

No jinxing :-). I'm actually considering buying that same model and putting together something very similar with the stripped upper and lower of an old Bushmaster (bought before I knew better) that never worked right.

I just got off the phone with a gentleman named "Dave" from their customer service section. He is the "rifle guy". He took my serial number, pulled up the bill of materials and other data and said that the rifle is carbine length. I asked him if it was changed along the way but he said that present day TS rifles are also carbine length. (Mine was from the autumn of 2015.)

So unless the resource material he is referring to is in error, that's the answer. But truthfully, I've seen them change info on their site before so I wouldn't stake my life on it.

I haven't seen a TS recently but rifles of that vintage were all carbine length.

Well, that just adds to my confusion.

The pic on the S&W page is definitely midlength considering how far forward the gas block is. I tried to zoom in on the pic of your rifle and it looks carbine length. Maybe they just made a few midlengths early on when it came out and rapidly switched to carbine lengths but didn't update their site photos.

Sorry, T, that's all I got. Here's an image taken before I started adding accessories.

Looks like carbine length when I zoom in.

In any case, and to avoid derailing this any further, you have a really good setup with that rifle :-)

Took this out to 600 yards today with IMI MK262 Razor Core. Shot well, the BDC in the FC3-G reticle is very close and works well. I was 1.19-1.49 MOA out to 500, opened up to 1.9 at 600. Quartering cross wind 5G9KTS.

It's a Colt 6920 SOCOM upper I shaved the front sight and had PRI make me a 14 natural with just holes for short rail sections at the end. SSA-E trigger, Magpul plastic.

Those SOCOM profile barrels do shoot nice groups if nothing else. When my issued M4 was upgraded to an M4A1, I noticed a pretty sizable difference in my groups while zeroing, and shot a 40/40 with it. I normally shoot expert, but not that well...

I haven't found a chrome lined barrel that shoots as well as Colt yet. The heavier SOCOM profile does help a bit.

That gun is heavy and has a light trigger. It's easy to shoot. It shoots better than I thought it would. I'm debating on replacing the 1-4 with a 2.5-10 or a 4-16. It shoots that good and I don't carry it.

But bolt guns are more fun and I could put that money on a 6.5CM....

Took the coyote whacker out for a stroll today and managed to get a decent group.

5 shots at 100M, came in under 1/2 MOA. ADI 69gr SMK. Wish this stuff was still around. Can't be beat for a factory 69 load.

Nice rig!

What barrel and twist rate? I'm assuming 1-9 due to your preference for 69 grain SMK...

Also, do you find any need for a cheek riser with the A5?

Finally, is the A5 bedded or drop-in on a factory inlet?

It's a 1/9. That's a 700P I had reamed to 223 Wylde and cut to 20". Has a Timney 510.

It dropped it right into the stock. I think most people would like a riser, but I like it, I think it's a a little easier to get behind like it is.

That's actually a standby gun while my other one is out getting built. It's the same thing but now has a 1/8 Pac-Nor, .223 Wylde, action trued, stock bedded. It should be here today, it's been gone a year.

We had one just like that, with the distinct impression of someones teeth on the butt stock. I adopted it as my own and got a SF forend put on it.
