David Armstrong, eat your heart out:

Just bought this today. Not totally original, so I'd say it's more retro inspired. I'm going for a 607-like build. Nodak slick-side upper, A1 rear sights, everything in XM gray. Midlength gas system because I think it's the cats meow....plus I can't SBR like the original 607, so the longer triangle hand guards will balance out the look compared to carbine length triangular grips. It's got a heavy barrel, so I think I'll turn it down to .575" for a hefty weight reduction. It also has a Nodak retro charging handle.

I had made a thread a while back about featherweight 223 rifles, and that's pretty much what this is fulfilling. I wanted a retro kick to it as well, just because I've always wanted a 607. Should be a pretty simple, very lightweight, bare-bones carbine.

For the lower I'm going to buy a Nodak XM gray receiver, with an A1 grip. I think I'll use one of the old N1 style CAR stocks, as it's the closest to "right" that I'll get, while maintaining the whole lightweight mantra I'm going for. Repro 607 stocks cost upwards of $500 or so, as well......and I'm simply not going to pay out that many shekels.

So, I figured I'd start a thread. Post up your retro guns, start a discussion or something.

Anyone know where to get a quality "Fiberite"-style CAR stock?

Figured I'd update this.

Along the way I bought parts here and there. I've had all the parts now since last summer, but had been wanting to save some cash to send it out for an XM gray finish from US Anodizing. I've finally realized that just isn't going to happen because of money, so I started looking at alternatives. I picked up a $12 rattle can of Brownells Aluma-Hyde II, which is a spray-on epoxy finish. It also doesn't require oven curing like Duracoat, Cerakote or Brownell's Gun-Kote....though you can do so at low temp just to speed up the curing. I've read posts of guys curing it at 350* like other finishes and it ruining it.....most commonly by making it really glossy, or at worst burning the color.

I spray my PSA lower receiver, external lower parts, and buffer tube on Wednesday. With the understanding that it is a $12 finish, I'm pretty damn happy. It's not an exact match, but looks a whole lot better than a mismatched black lower. It was fairly easy, though I did get some imperfections on the right side of the lower when I tried spraying the 2nd coat without first spraying just for the sake of cleaning out the nozzle, and it spitted some. The rest of the lower and all other parts came out perfect with a matte finish. I did 3 light coats, 10 minutes apart, letting the spray mist the parts. Going heavier and doing thick coats will result in a glossy finish, from what I can learn by looking at various examples across the gunternet.

Just waiting until Wednesday to assemble the lower. Just want to make sure it's fully cured.

Aluma-Hyde is pretty easy to use, and cheap. I'd totally use it to refinish some other beater pieces for fun. Supposedly it's more durable and more solvent-friendly than just Krylon or engine paint, but not as durable as a "real" bake-on finish. Fair compromise. Also, for what it's worth, it doesn't feel like an epoxy finish, with how some of them feel gummy, plastic like, ect....it still feels like a piece of anodized aluminum, which is nice.

I've been wanting a Colt SP-1 rifle or an M16A1 clone for some time. Back in the late 80's Early 90's I had a colt SP-1 lower with an M16A1 upper the colors didn't match but it shot and functioned well. I had a an Action Arms ultra dot in an ARMS carry handle mount. Another gun in the book of tears..,,

$150 for the lower reciever, almost another hundred for the buffer tube and lower parts.

Go for it! It's a great time to do it.

I had ADCO do the work to turn down the barrel to .575". With the popularity of .625" lightweight barrels, you might even be able to get a 20" and save yourself the lathe work.

This could actually been a fun idea for a sort-of retro/unique build......if you have a full auto AR lower.....

.....especially with the new D60 drums coming out

M&A Parts has this one for a decent price. I have a few and they seem decent enough.

is that a battle comp?

is that a battle comp?

Nope, just a generic comp from ADCO.

I was pretty much open to using a comp, because a repro 607 moderator would be a no-go for my state....and the fake 607 moderators are just stupid heavy and throw off the balance of the gun. I'm not even sure if 45Bravo is still around making repro XM177 and 607 moderators....I'd use either if I had the choice.

Nah....didn't think you were judging, it's just why use a comp when going for a 607? Even a 3 prong flash hider would be incorrect for a 607, but it'd at least be more in character.

I went with the Fiberite because a repro 607 stock system costs about $700.......if you can find one. Went with a midlength gas because carbine A1 handguards would look funny on a 16 barrel.

If I lived in another state and didn't have the prospect of moving for a job.....and had more fun money to blow....I'd do it up right with a Nodak Spud lower and perm attach a 45Bravo repro 607 moderator onto a shorter barrel. Even if I could, I don't think I'd SBR it to make it a real 607 barrel/gas system setup, though. There was a reason they only made 50 of these things. Due to the lack of dwell time, their reliability was atrocious (along with the 605).

I'm glad that it's inspiring to you, I really appreciate that. If I'm not mistaken, you're a 20" rifle sort of AR dude, right? What are you thinking of building?

Yesterday jerking the trigger posted that Griffin Armament was making a XM linear comp for a XM177E2 build. I started looking around at building a clone and am entertaining a retro inspired build. I think the kit coupled with the barrel posted above from Brownells might be cheaper and easier but that link says they are out of stock. I found one at another sight, but about $150 more expensive.

That's a 1:12 twist. Unless you're super hard core about it being as original as possible (in which case you can just buy an SP1), I'd buy a pencil barrel in a tighter twist so you're not SOL if the only ammo you have on hand is heavier stuff. The extra $100 expense would be worth it to me, at least.

Here's a nice example from Criterion via Fulton Armory: http://www.fulton-armory.com/barrelfa16m4gicontourcm1x9threadedchromelined-1.aspx

I was thinking the same thing. Still, a really neat dudeshooter. I continually kick myself for getting rid of the 1982 vintage SP-1 carbine I used to have; one of my more retarded moves.

Tough one! Imagine all those guys who sold real HK 91s, 93s, ect before the ban that must be kicking themselves now.

Speaking of, anyone else have ANY older evil black rifles? I know LL has a FAL. Anyone else? HK91/93, Galil, Daewoo, so on....

I have a pre ban Galil - it's accurate and reliable but it's a heavy beast for a 5.56.

Took this smoke-wagon out today for the first time. No hiccups for 120 rounds. It gets EXTREMELY hot very quick. After 45 rounds fired in quick succession, but not blazing fast.....there was smoke coming out the top of the handguards. Hand placement is critical.

The ADCO brake is Hella loud. Makes my Battlecomp equipped BCM middy sound like a suppressor. Recoil is noticeably stronger than my BCM as well.

I'm not sure if ADCO boresighted it, but the thing was dead on for windage and only a few inches high at 50 yards. Next time I take it out, I'll try to do some accuracy testing. I'm wondering how heat will play with the .575" barrel. Rob from VA Arms went to .550", but I don't know anything about accuracy with his featherweight build.

All in all, I'm very happy. Fun to shoot as long as you have double earpro! Shooting this thing at an indoor range warrants getting punched in the face.
