Bought this unfired in fall of 2013; put 50 rounds through it. I intend on giving this a sound workout in the future...

Just finished 2,016 rds, so it was time for a photo-op:

Annnd, I got tired of the green grips, so we are back to stock:
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k498/theleprechaun19/SIG%20and%201911/IMAG1923_zps2f0d7365.jpg (http://s1112.photobucket.com/user/theleprechaun19/media/SIG%20and%201911/IMAG1923_zps2f0d7365.jpg.html)

I have yet to get the "back-up" pistol out and shooting. I do occasionally use it for dry-fire. I want to say that the back-up is a "Wednesday" gun. I can't explain why, but when I first bought it, I only had about 700 rounds through the first one, and the feel of them was different. Everything felt tighter on the back-up gun. Even after re-springing the green-gripped pistol, the back-up still felt tighter all around - almost as if more attention to detail had been given. Hence, a "Wednesday" gun. Whoever was working on it, must have been working on it in the middle of the week and didn't have anywhere to go in a hurry... Whereas the first one is either a "Friday" gun (in a hurry to get out of work), or, a "Monday" gun (hangover). Hahahaha... Either way, enjoy. I still have to write-up my 2,000 report too... hmmm....

I once saw a post where a guy said he was at the range and all he had time to shoot 11 flawless rounds. No joke. I was also chastised on another forum for abusing my gun by not cleaning it in over 2,000 rounds. Which, I don't mind and I like stoking the fire, but hey, thats why I love this forum :D

OK - now I'll mix things up a bit with a rifle photo.

Like most of you - I have always pinned for a Sig 550, but being a mere mortal this is never going to happen. I looked for an excuse to purchase 556 series gun. Given the mixed reviews of the gun, I never could justify the expense just for a piece of eye candy and a simple range toy so I figured that the Sig522 would be the perfect way to go. It was relatively cheap, shot cheap (yeah right) ammo, was fun, and mostly satisfied my desire for a Sig 550 "family" rifle. I finally found a green model at a decent price and pulled the trigger so to speak.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/wyorca/IMG_0516_zps4ff07c6f.jpg

Now for less artistic photos -

My SP2022 that spent the past 2 years as my primary pea-shooter while I was performing the 2000 round challenge on it.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/wyorca/IMG_0521_zps789e235e.jpg

My new (old) City of Flint MI P229 converted from DAO to SRT that is to become my new primary pea-shooter for a year or two. I might add that I purchased this gun prior to Jedi Master Todd's decision to go to a P229 was made public ;)

Are you still sporting the Hogues on yours? I went with a nice set of non-finger groved Hogues on my police gun and after 600 or so rounds have found them just to be too large in the wrong places to easily manipulate the controls.

Yeah I still run the Hogue grips. I've got large hands and they just seem to fit me well. On the draw from concealment they really mold to my hands. I've heard a few people talk about how they are usually too large for their hands. I haven't had much problem manipulating the controls, long fingers helps I assume.

Blue gun fun ! SIG P-229R DAKs converted to dedicated SIMs guns by our agency armory. They do a nice powder coat finish.

The conversion kits direct from Simunitions aren't that cost prohibitive if you were serious about picking one up. For the P series guns you're only effectively swapping the barrel itself. Easy peasy (Tipping the hat of course to all the standard force on force precautionary measures).

SIG makes factory blue sims guns as well as red non firing training guns but all ours are conversions by our armorers. They are hard to come by but our guys do a great job on them and they are great training tools.

Re: the 10k service life, yes, basically this was due to hot 155 grain ammo and no PM though this has changed for the better and the 10k thing may go away.

Our prior Beretta and HK 40 cal service pistols were selected.based on a 10k round service life. Our guys shoot quarterly with and an average round count of 800 -1k per year. As a large organization spread across the country, PM like recoil spring changes was hit of miss / locally dependent. On a positive note, we were required to keep log books on each weapon and kept track of the round count and any maintenance or repairs performed. If you hit 10k rounds, you turned in the gun for a replacement and it was sent into our national armory.

In addition to the lack of PM, we were shooting a very hot 155 grain . 40 cal load which was hard on the guns and shooters.

When we went to the SIGs, the log book requirement went away though we were still told to turn in weapons after 10k rounds and we were still using the hot 155 grain ammo. I've kept a log on my own SIG, replaced my recoil springs at the factory recommended 3-5k intervals and replaced them for others as much as possible.

We finally went to 180 grain Federal HST a few years ago which has helped. About the same time we switched ammo we starred having a bunch of broken take down levers, which I believe is a legacy of the 155 grain ammo and waiting too long to swap recoil springs.

Beginning last year, we finally replaced the recoil springs in all of our SIGs. Since we haven't been keeping round counts, they color coded the springs. They are lime green instead of the blue SIG normally uses on P229 40 springs. So lime green will mean the spring was changed in 2013/14 and we will get new springs with a new color in a few years.

I recently fired 200 rounds of our old 155 grain ammo through my personal USPc and my hand was killing me. I had forgotten how hot our 155 grain was, or I'm getting old - ok both !

That is an interesting data point. I thought that broken takedown levers were endemic to P220's. I've always heard they start breaking around 15,000 and are gone by 25,000. I did not know that it happened in P229's. It does confirm my theory that the more energy you put downrange, the more energy you put into the takedown lever - and it can only take so much.

Yes, I've seen few break on the P-229s, between 10 and 20 out of 600 ish guns. When they break, the gun still functions. The lever normally breaks free from the "drum" portion which sits in the frame, allowing the lever to rotate and precluding re holstering or field stripping the gun.

SIG recommends recoil spring replacement every 3-5k on the 40& 357 guns. Our guns are mostly 2005 / 2006 production so even with the hot 155 ammo, we didn't start seeing breakages until 7k to 8 k rounds.

I've only seen one break since we swapped out all the recoil springs.

Ahh. That is a different problem than what really concerns me. The separation of the arm from the drum is not a game ender except in some really odd circumstances. Sig turned out a bunch of guns with bad levers. They are supposed to be welded and riveted and one of their subcontractors only riveted them.

When one fails in a P220, it fractures in the middle of the lever. My first happened in the middle of a match. The gun failed to fire so I tapped-racked-clicked. I tap-racked again and the slide launched down range, leaving me with a frame and looking at the round in the top of the magazine. It was not confidence inspiring.

If it was me i'd get a red dryfire gun over a blue gun. About a year ago GTs in Austin had some used blue P226s - part of a PD trade in - they are also a major SIG LE distributor - call em - worst they can say is no. I've never had the factory red guns but the agency and FLETC converted ones I've seen had cut firing pins and pugged barrels but allowed cycling / chambering of dummy rounds.

I think liability concerns would be higher with a blue gun vs the non firing red gun.

Back in January '13 I found these at a local gun shop. P220's for $500 each.

The kicker

IIRC the top was made in '92 or '93 and the bottom was from '95. I put new springs in the bottom gun and a a set of slim grips (which required a new MSA) and sold it. Kept the older gun which has good nights sights and ordered all new springs for it and a set of slim grips. Well I didn't know what I was getting into and found out the hard way that the old spur hammers don't work with the newer hammer struts. Ended up being a good excuse to put an SRT kit in. Still have all the old parts, just in case.

I know I'm not the only one that has trouble keeping my thumb away from the slide stop. So this happened.

Overall, I think they're a better feel than the OEM grip but the E2s were put on shortly after I got the gun so I can't speak to performance increase/decrease over the long term. I do wish that the curved area right below the beavertail wasn't as pronounced -- while I have smaller hands, it feels like there's a bit of a gap there unless my grip is just right. I did try some Hogue G10 grips on a friend's gun that felt great, and have considered moving to them.

Of the SIG grips I've tried, my favorites are actually those on my friend's TacOps. I'd really like to get a set like the Ballistic Radio guy had for his Salient Arms MK-25 test, where they turned them into a more CCW-friendly magwell. I'm not creative enough to figure out how to do that job myself.

I know you're asking someone else but this past year I've been shooting more SIGs than anything else. The E2 grips on my 226 felt "great in the hand" but during shooting I just couldn't perform very well with them. Didn't even need a timer, I just felt like the gun was slipping away from me during recoil. I don't have very big hands but I feel the E2 is just didn't work for me. Put Hogue G10s on it a couple weeks ago, which seem to have improved pretty much everything about the gun.

The chain link is a bit more aggressive, which I like, but the piranhas are working out pretty well and I think they look better. I could take either one and not lose any sleep, though IMO the checkered G10 aren't enough improvement over the stock grips to be worth the price (~$120, wow). I prefer the checkered aluminum over the checkered G10.

First, I lied about waiting on the Hogue grips. Walked into a cheap-enough-to-try price for a used set of G10 Piranha texture grips and went with those. They feel great. I much prefer them to both the E2 and the OEM grip shapes -- really fills out my hand better.

Second, I bought another P226. This is a 1995-mfg factory two-tone nickel gun, stamped Made in Germany. I'm not ordinarily a fan of two-tone guns. I am, however, a fan of $450 gun show P-226s that have no frame rail wear and some minor cosmetic dings. Fired about 200 rounds for function without issue. Excellent DA trigger on this gun.

229R with RMR06 3.25 MOA dot milled in by Mark Housel. Back up irons from Ameriglo (they're for a 226 and are off, needs a new rear sight). The top end is mine, the lower belongs to the PD. It's my carry/duty/USPSA Carry Optics gun. I replaced the stock recoil spring with a 13lb spring. Dot tracks better that way. I had to put a piece of tape on the bottom of the RMR to keep the battery from losing contact and causing the dot to go out.

Ha! Nice catch. I had to go down and look to see if you're ID skills were accurate….and indeed they are! I'll notify their owner they've been located. :D

Noted re the finish wear. The Elite only has about 8K though it, but it usually only sees holster use on match days. The X5 is new to me and still under 1K total. I'm a pretty recent convert to the all stainless guns but initial reports are good. Once you get em sprung right, they sure do shoot flat.

Do you see the SIG beavertail as a positive, negative, or neither?

I've seen some SIG guy's comment the beavertail actually forces a lower grip than the standard frame configuration.

I always thought Todd's comments on that were interesting. They don't seem to apply to me and how I grip the pistol though. That is to say that on a non-beavertailed Sig, the web of my hand doesn't protrude up to where it "rolls over the top", if that makes sense. My hand sits in the exact same place on both types; the beavertail doesn't limit *my* ability to get as high as *I* need to. I could see perhaps it doing so with someone who has meatier hands though. I wear XL sized gloves, but my hands are on the slimmer side. I haven't observed any shootability difference between the two frame types.

(Wow. XS Big Dots. That's a little embarrassing.)

Here's a more on-topic one:

2202
I still thought .40 was cool back then, too. I owned a Border Marshal and a 96D at about the same time... :o

That GSR set up is sweet. How did you like the XS sights? I have found that my over 50 yr old eyes like em on my G19 and G30s. Someone told me XS sights could not make accurate shots out at 25 yards and so I shot em at 25 yards holding the top of the front dot and put 14 out of 15 rounds inside the "0" circle of an IDPA target using my G19. Managed to pull one shot as I picked up speed towards the end of that string of fire. Found the XS sights to work ok for me. I used the standard dot front sight though not the big one. No matter on the XS sights, that GSR is a nice looking 1911 variant. The knife and holster round out that set up quite nicely.. SIG does not market that particular GSR model any longer...correct?? How do you like the GSR?

My current 239 is pretty high mileage and I can't get the sights to regulate. It's the only Sig I've ever owned that has shot low. 4" at 15 yards low. New Siglites didn't help it.

Found this yesterday at Quantico Tactical and couldn't pass. New in the box, May 2015 manufacture date, Siglites, and 3 magazines. I'll be pissed if it doesn't shoot to the sights.

I'm tied up for the next couple weeks so test firing will have to wait unfortunately.

Are you using the "dot" or the tip of the front sight as an aiming point? If the latter, the POI you're experiencing would be expected on a factory gun with stock (8/8) sights. If you're looking to have the gun print at the tip of the front sight, you're gonna have to monkey with the sight relationship.

Driving the dot.

If you want the POI to come up 4" at 15 yards, (assuming you're happy with "driving the dot") you'll need a front that's about .040" shorter than your rear sight. Heinie makes a stock tritium set that'll get you really close. And Dawson makes a combo that'll get you there too. I use the latter in a really similar height relationship on my pistols.

FWIW, Sigs typically don't come out of the box (or use stock sights) and print where I like them to.

Me either except for the 229-1 and MK25 I have. Typically they shoot high for me.

The 239 is one of the early ones and I thought maybe that had something to do with it. Had some newish Siglites setting around so thought I would try them out but no dice. Printed in the same place.

I really hope the new 239 is closer. I'm an odd ball but I've grown to like the stock Sig night sights with some red sharpie on the rear dots.

08-08-2016, 06:20 PM
Good copy. FWIW, the Dawson night sights are very similar and you can get em in pretty whatever dimensions you want (heights and widths).

Put some E2 grips on my W. German P220 and I like it. My groups with this gun aren't good but I only bought it because I love the way Sig P22x's look so I only dust it off occasionally for fun.

Still have my SP2022, but sadly do not have my P229R anymore. I've handled all 3. I would say that the SP2022's grip length is somewhere between the 229 and 226.

I really, really wish this combo worked. I picked up two of these LIMA 5 laser grip modules. One wouldn't won't hold zero and the other interfered with slide movement and turned the gun into a single-shot. The concept is great, but the execution is a joke.

On the positive side, watching the laser wander with each shot was pretty neat. The green laser dot would be right on top of the Romeo 1 red dot for the first shot, then it would be an inch or two below, then an inch or two to the right, then above, etc. If I hadn't bought the modules from Brownells because I expected them to be a non-functional, I would have been pretty pissed.* As it was I put a few magazines through the setup just to watch the laser wander around. It was worth a few giggles.

I suspect the laser/dot combo would be amazing for developing your index, and cover pretty much all your bases for lighting conditions and shooting positions. Now if we could just get dots and lasers that don't break when you look at them hard...

Getting in some good work after taking nearly a year off of shooting. I've got Tom Given's Instructor Development Course coming up at the beginning of November, so I'm trying to get back up to speed with the 320. It's a fantastic shooter. I sure wish Sig had handled the drop safety issues more responsibly so I could recommend the 320. I was already in neck deep before the drop safety issues otherwise I wouldn't own any. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181021/b0da80bc0da39e32a672c05b78fa2829.jpg

It's a JM Custom Wing Claw 1.0, wide hole spacing and set up for an APL-C. I've been waffling on if I want to modify this myself for my TLR7 or quit being cheap and get a new one made but get the DCCs.

Since I'm turning 30 this year, I decided I wanted to get my hands on a P228 (A gun I've wanted for a while). This one's been sitting at a local pawn shop for months and is in pretty good condition. As an added bonus, it was produced the same year I was born.

I plan on tuning it up a little, get some carry gear for it and eventually some nice leather.

A MK25 has been a grail gun of mine for a while now. Found a nice used one for a fair price so, what the hell? The clerk told me the previous owner said he shot "over 200" rounds through it, as if he thought that was a lot. The barrel looks like it's got a few rounds through it but the finish on the rest of the gun is pristine. Came with the original box and 3 mags, 2015 production year. Night sights are dead but they're 3-dots so I'd want to replace them anyway. Trigger is smooth but a little heavy.

Not long ago I was looking for Safariland holsters for Beretta 92's with lights attached and found a holster on Amazon that said it would fit an M9 and a P226 with a light so I ordered it. Turns out they got the description wrong and they made that model both for the M9 and a different one for the P226. But I kept it because I knew I would buy a MK25 eventually.

Why are you eager to put the G19 away and get back into a heavier, DA/SA gun? I am not asking to be snarky. I carried a P229 for twenty years and I was almost giddy when I could get into something lighter, essentially the same size, carried more rounds and was far easier to shoot well. I am curious as to your reasoning.

I am curious as to your reasoning. No one can deny the G19 beats the P229 in regards to weight, size, and clean lines for carry (the fact Glocks are factory dehorned is nice).

But for me, there are items I prefer about the P229; with G10 or the classic carry grips(as pictured) the grip and trigger reach are better for my hand size. I've found I prefer a DA/SA trigger over SAO & striker. I like that my Sig mags positively eject everytime, no trying to fumble with a partially ejected mag when I already have a fresh one in my hand. I prefer the grip angle of the Sig; might just be because I've spent so much time behind them, I find it easier to naturally index and track the sights, especially the RMR. All in all, it may be bigger & heavier but it works better for me.

The largest user (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Dienstwaffen_der_deutschen_Polizei#Pisto len) of the P6 was the police of the German federal state (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polizei_Nordrhein-Westfalen) "Nordrhein-Westfalen", where I live ("North Rhine-Westphalia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Rhine-Westphalia)" in English, 42000 police officers). I strongly suppose, this is what the "NW" on the slide stands for and it was a former police pistol from here.

Very nice piece. If it was mine, I would only replace the hammer spring with the lighter one from the P225 in order to reduce the DA trigger weight. (I've read, the DA trigger pull of the P6 is heavier than the P225's. I suppose, the difference is the hammer spring.)

This picture shows a P6 and the former uniform jacket:

PS:
According to the following website, the difference is in deed the hammer spring:
realgunreviews.com/sig-sauer-p6-west-german-bargain-now (https://www.realgunreviews.com/sig-sauer-p6-west-german-bargain-now/):

The most noticeable difference between the SIG P6 and P225, at least for your trigger finger, is the P6’s heavy 24 lb mainspring (item #33 in the parts diagram below) [...] On the P225, SIG used the same standard 18-19 lb mainspring that it used in the P220, P226, P228, and much later the P229. Those extra pounds of trigger resistance on the P6 helped ensure that if a West German cop wanted to pull the trigger…. he really had to want to pull the trigger.

I have just done this.
An 17lb hammer spring, new recoil spring and firing pin spring.
I also changed all three of the magazines to new springs..... It was amazing to see just how badly the mag springs were compressed.

Looking for sights, possibly just some fiber optics, but I really have to shoot it since the springs.

Thanks for the info.
