Hello all. When using a shotgun in general LEO patrol work are there any good ways of carrying extra ammo besides a sidesaddle attached to the gun?

Not sure about patrol work, but my two favorites for field use are the hard plastic vertical holders from Choate/California Competition works, and the SOE vertical shot shell holders. The California Competition holder gives an attach option of a strong clip, which is quick to put on your belt as you grab a shotgun. The SOE is something you can wear on your belt or attach to molle.

I have used a latex glove pouch on my duty belt. It will hold 3 shells. Perfect setup to carry some slugs.

My agency issues the 1st, along with this one for the AR:

We generally run it with just one strap as a bandoleer type of affair.

I have a "cartridge loop" style belt that holds 20 or so shells. It's plenty big because it can get all the way around my middle. :)

I also have some of the Safariland two round holders that I can attach to my belt if need be.

A small 4 round caddie attached to your duty belt.

What are your restrictions if any? Are you restricted from keeping extra ammo on a saddle or are these shotguns that are checked out pre-shift? Do you need to maintain leather pouches? Do the pouches need to be closed top? Can shells be exposed on the belt?

No restrictions on anything, I really want something I can grab with the shotgun if time permits. I'm going to try a clip on pouch as suggested above or maybe the SOE rig.

I always liked a saddle as it put extra rounds on the shotgun itself and this was especially an advantage in a patrol grab and go situation. If you have no restrictions so to speak I might also run a few rounds in a pouch set up on the duty belt itself. Probably keeping all buck in / on the weapon and slugs on my person. But that is just my preference.

Very true. Generally if the ammo is not on the gun or your person your not going to have it in a patrol setting.

Our duty guns have Mesa sidesaddles. I currently have 00 in the tube, slugs in the sidesaddle, and 00 in the SOE rig.

We generally run it with just one strap as a bandoleer type of affair.

The idea is to stow them together, so you can sling the rig as you grab the shottie. Ideally.

I have a 6 round Mesa side-saddle on my work gun. Both tube and side-saddle are slugs, because it is my go-to for vehicle takedowns. I have an 8 round forearm holder with 00 buck with the gun. My go-bag is set up for shotgun, with several shotgun cards that fix to the velcro flap to allow loading from the bag.

My daily wear is a molle vest with a big velcro patch on the chest. If I deploy my shotgun, a shotgun card gets slapped on. In entry gear, the forearm holder goes on every time.

I'm a big fan of velcro-backed shell cards as well.

BillP, I'm interested in the forearm holder you mentioned -- any chance you have a picture or product name?

I removed my side saddle and now run these.

I like the HSGI cards (and all of their ammo carriers, really) but I tend to buy the elastic-type cards because some of my shotguns are 20ga. Really wish someone would come up with a polymer shell clip design which worked well with both 12ga and 20ga ammo.
