It will be fun they said! Only now I have to rent a hotel room after sticking one of my holsters in the oven to remold it a little bit. The gf is not too happy XD - seriously though I have done this quite a bit and never had this happen. I'm not sure what was different but this smell is more potent than a skunk and spreads twice as fast. My dog threw up when she walked into the kitchen... So what gives???? I took all the hardware off.. Hmm
Holster modification worked wonderfully btw! Fits better than ever

No idea what happened in your case, but Kydex can be sensitive to being heated too quickly, and to going too far above its working temperature.

Lol
You know kydex is a PVC, right?

Slow, low heat doesn't take much. I believe the out gassing once heated to stink level is highly toxic.

When I molded my kydex holster, I did not preheat the oven then put the kydex in to warm up. I put it in then turned the oven on and let it heat up slowly. If you're just making minor fitment adjustments, a hairdryer works well.

I can't think of any vapour phase chlorine compounds that aren't toxic.

That's why I left and ventilated the place all night. I always set the oven to 250 and cook it for 3 min. The only thing I could think of was the oven got hotter than usual or it had some weapon lube that cooked.

Yeah you REALLY don't want those anywhere near your lungs/circulation/nervous system/anything at all.

I would seriously consider replacing the oven as well, or at least are resigned to the fact that you can never use it to cook food again.

the smell is gone this morning from the oven. I don't know much about toxic plastic gasses but how could I tell if said oven needed replacing? Also could I just use the cleaning option?

Sometimes when you have an oven at operating temperature, opening the door can trip the thermostat and if what you are heating is too near an element, bad things can happen. I know this the same way I know that opening a toaster oven door lets oxygen in and can cause things that were just smoldering to burst into flames.

interesting, I did open and close it a couple times to check it

It's your judgement call to make but if you vaporized enough kydex to make your dog puke I would never use that oven for food again. No amount of poly chloro anything is safe for me or the food I eat. You can do your homework and make your own decision but when I work with chemicals much more tame than that we use a pretty serious zero tolerance policy . Lab coat gloves fume hood the whole nine yards

Not to mention they are highly mutagenic and cumulative exposure does very bad things to the integrity of your DNA. If there is any melted kydex lingering in the oven or on the rack and it is constantly vaporizing in the same environment as your dinner you can look forward to some very sobering conversations with your doctor in the future

Chemical warfare can't be all bad, as it is the foundation of Chemotherapy.

SPONK?!? "SPONK" is a Hulk noise???
That's the noise the mag tube spring makes when it departs my 1100 and attempts to achieve low earth orbit.

*pffffft*
Amateurs.
To do kydex heating right you gotta use a Flir infrared camera.
EVERYBODY knows that.
Lucky you, I know someone who not only has a few Flir IR cameras but is also a Level3 IR thermographer and can be on site at your location in <24hrs.
All I need is a CC number and expiration date...

Just because i'm curious, have you mentioned possibly needing a new oven/does very bad things to the integrity of your DNA thing to your girl friend?

It has her doing some research now, she started as chem major before she switched to physics - so she isn't as worried as I am but more interested. I did explain it to her with pictures of the hulk which was a bad idea. Luckily for me we have an outdated one anyway and if it has to go... It could use replacing anyway. She is more angry that some of her clothes and purse now seem to permenantly smell.

Just reread the OP, I assumed he had used a toaster oven like I did. If I had used our oven, Mrs. Casual Friday would have had my Olsen twins.

if it was a full size oven, would not putting it on the self clean cycle bake off all the bad?

That's what I'm wondering, the gf is of the opinion that since there's no
Actual kydex melted in there that it should be ok.
It would seem if there was actually melted kydex in there (it didn't actually melt and was in a pan) then self clean mode would actually be bad since it would make the toxic gas all over again?

:D
On a practical note, how does one cut kydex cleanly?
I have a holster that may need a trim beyond what's practical with a dremel.

YVK,
I've cut and formed a bunch of kydex. Wiss metal shears work well, these are the rubber handled compound leverage kind.
Cut 1/16" oversize and file or dremel to exact size. As with metal it is important to radius all internal corners so as to not have stress risers.

Coping saw works too, then file and/or sand the edges smooth. You can also hit the edge with propane torch (very briefly) to get it super smooth and shiny. Kydex is a PVC/Acrylic Polymer, and flaming the edges is what they do with Acrylic Fish Tanks to make them so smooth.
