By chance, I realized that my reloads seemed faster with an older Gen 3 17, compared to some newer frames. When I looked at the frame, I realized the older one (on the right below) was cut out more in the front. For whatever reason, the old frame seems to suck in magazines with less effort than the newer frames. Anyone else noticed this?

Yes, Bob Vogel has also discussed this: http://pistol-forum.com/showthread.php?5859-Robert-Vogel-2-Day-Pistol-Class-AAR-01-Nov-2012

"Of note, he prefers the older Glocks with the front strap dimple, as it aids his control during mag insertion."

Yes, I noticed this when I got my EXO gun in 2010. I think that's about the time the change was slipped in.

That is one Glock modification that I would like to have done (properly).

Would this be legal for Production (USPSA) and SSP (IDPA)?

If you have to ask...

USPSA (page 81): "Appendix D4 - 22.2 Grips - any addition or removal of material which changes the factory profile or adds function such as beavertail or thumb rest...As noted above (21.4) Revolver grips may be replaced with OEM or aftermarket grips of any shape, profile and surface texture. 22.2 is deemed to NOT APPLY to REVOLVER grips. Adding or removing material to change the profile of Revolver grips is ALLOWED. (http://www.uspsa.org/document_library/2010HandgunRulesProof3web.pdf)..UNLESS a modification is SPECIFICALLY authorized in the rules or SPECIFICALLY authorized in an official, published NROI interpretation, it is considered a PROHIBITED MODIFICATION. (http://www.uspsa.org/document_library/2010HandgunRulesProof3web.pdf)" (http://www.uspsa.org/document_library/2010HandgunRulesProof3web.pdf)

IPSC (page 54): "Appendix D4 - 16.1 - Modifications to them, other than minor detailing (the removal of burrs and/or adjustments unavoidably required in order to fit replacement OFM parts or components), are prohibited. Other prohibited modifications include those which facilitate faster reloading (e.g. flared, enlarged and/or add-on magwells, etc.), changing the original color and/or finish of a handgun, and/or adding stripes or other embellishments." (http://www.ipsc.org/pdf/RulesHandgun.pdf)

IDPA (page 33): "8.2.1.4.11. Removing material from the magazine well opening." (http://members.idpa.com/Content/Rules/g0hunysc.eoc.pdf)

Wouldn't the change from the new profile to the older profile still be "factory".
