How come practically everybody*, when they're "airgunning" or miming holding a carbine in a "No kitten, there I was..." story, positions their hands-with-pointy-fingers like their M4 is a product of Birdman Weapons Systems, complete with Homeboy Nite Sites?

Somebody pointed this out to me and, now that I notice it, I can't not notice it, and trying to figure out why is making my OCD itch.

*Myself included.

I saw Jeremy Renner do it in a movie and he's rad so I started doing it.

Early childhood finger gun training effect?

I noted that years ago, but not being OCD, and being ADD instead, I squirrel!........

Given how Hollywood is a source of bad gun-handling quirks... Hm. The first place I remember seeing it in a movie was in Black Hawk Down, IIRC, but surely the actor was aping one of his .mil trainers?

Maybe because that's the natural orientation of the weapon in a sling while on your body? Only reason I can think of.

Because it's closer to the relaxed state of our bone/muscle/joint alignment.

Logical and probably true, but not funny. We should make up a reason instead. :D
