Angie Harmon is suing Instacart and a former shopper who shot and killed her dog, Oliver

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Actor Angie Harmon has filed a lawsuit against Instacart and one of its former shoppers who fatally shot her dog in March while delivering groceries at her North Carolina home.

The lawsuit filed late last week in Mecklenburg County seeks to hold the shopper and Instacart liable for accusations of trespassing, gross negligence, emotional distress and invasion of privacy, among other allegations. It accuses Instacart of engaging in negligent hiring, supervision, retention and misrepresentation. The suit seeks monetary damages, to be determined at trial.
Instacart says the shopper has since been permanently banned from its platform.

Harmon is known for her work on TV shows including “Law & Order” and “Rizolli & Isles.” She told ABC News that it was “so unfathomable to think that there is somebody in your front driveway that just fired a gun.”

“I think Instacart is beyond responsible for all of this. This didn't have to happen," Harmon said in the interview that aired Wednesday on “Good Morning America.” ABC News described the dog as a “beagle mix.”

According to the complaint, Harmon ordered an Instacart groceries delivery from a Charlotte store on March 30. The Instacart app showed a shopper named Merle with a profile photo of an older woman, with whom Harmon believed she was exchanging text messages about her order, the lawsuit says.

Later that day, Harmon was upstairs filling her squirrel feeders when a “tall and intimidating younger man," not an older woman, showed up to deliver the groceries, the lawsuit says.

Harmon said she heard a gunshot sound and rushed outside. She found her dog, Oliver, had been shot, and saw the delivery person putting a gun into the front of his pants, according to the suit. Her teenage daughters, who had already been outside, were “in distress,” it says. The dog died at the veterinarian's office.
The shopper told police that he shot the dog after it attacked him, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department told news outlets, adding that they did not pursue criminal charges.

In an Instagram post last month about the encounter, Harmon wrote that the shopper “did not have a scratch or bite on him nor were his pants torn.”

Instacart says it immediately suspended the shopper after receiving the report about the shooting, then later removed him permanently. The company says it runs comprehensive background checks on shoppers, prohibits them from carrying weapons and has anti-fraud measures that include periodically requiring them to take a photo of themselves to ensure the person shopping matches their photo on file.

“Our hearts continue to be with Ms. Harmon and her family following this disturbing incident," Instacart said in a statement. "While we cannot comment on pending litigation, we have no tolerance for violence of any kind, and the shopper account has been permanently deactivated from our platform.”

IME it's becoming increasingly common for individuals with problematic personal history such as felons and illegal aliens to drive for ride share and delivery services under other people's accounts. The account holder usually gets a 15-20% kickback and the person doing the driving get the balance.

It has been an issue for a long time. Uber used to make its drivers take selfies every so often and its facial recognition software would verify the identity. But because facial recognition software doesn't work as well on dark skin, it lead to racial discrimination lawsuits from drivers whose accounts were suspended.

Damn, It’s getting to the point that the affluent can’t rely on the cavalcade of complete and total strangers coming to their homes to do all their grunt work for them any more. What’s a body to do.

Maybe the instacart shopper was Kristi Noem in drag.

(With all due respect to the beagle—who almost certainly did nothing to deserve this).
Civility is not a tactic or a sentiment. It is the determined choice of trust over cynicism, of community over chaos.

Man shoots 2 officers in Paris police station after grabbing gun
The incident happened in the French capital's 13th arrondissement shortly before 10:30 pm and one of the officers' wounds were life-threatening.

A man arrested for allegedly attacking a woman with a box cutter shot and seriously wounded two officers in a Paris police station on Thursday, May 9, after grabbing one of their weapons. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP) the incident happened in the French capital's 13th arrondissement shortly before 10:30 pm and that one of the officers' wounds were life-threatening.

Paris police chief Laurent Nunez arrived at the scene around midnight, accompanied by prosecutor Laure Beccuau. Nunez told reporters that the suspect had been arrested at around 10:00 pm for a "very violent attack on a woman" with a box cutter. "The officers intervened and brought him back here (to the police station), and it was during his processing that he snatched the weapon" and "seriously" wounded the two officers, he said.

The officers were both immediately transferred to hospital, as was the suspect, who was himself seriously wounded by return fire, Nunez added. "We are very worried about the state of health (of the officers)," he continued, lauding the station staff's "courage and responsiveness". Nunez said an investigation was underway to establish the "circumstances" surrounding the incident.

Reached by AFP, the prosecutor's office said three investigations had been opened – one into the "attempted murder of the woman", and one into the "attempted murder of persons holding public authority".

The third was being carried out by the IGPN, the national police's internal affairs department, to look into the use of "intentional violence with a weapon by a person holding public authority", as is routine when an officer uses their weapon.

The office said the suspect had been hospitalized with a chest wound, but his life was not in danger. "The investigations should clarify the circumstances of the events, the identity of the suspect and his possible links to the female victim," it added.

"A teenage rapper accidentally killed himself while filming a video on social media after he pointed a gun at his head and pulled the trigger.

The rapper, 17, was found dead in Suffolk, Virginia, on May 15, police confirmed to The Post. Cops said they believe he died by an “accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound” to the head.

Police would not confirm the name of the deceased teen, but separate footage circulating on social media showed Suffolk-based rapper Rylo Huncho singing into a camera while dancing with a pistol with a green laser sight."

US Special Operations soldier under investigation in deadly shooting of accused trespasser in Moore County

CARTHAGE, N.C. (WNCN) – A deadly shooting earlier this month in Moore County has gained attention from the U.S. Army and the FBI.

Deputies of the Moore County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a home along Dowd Road in Carthage on May 3 around 8:15 p.m. after a trespassing at a home was reported.

A 911 caller explained that a person had been “taking photos on the property” and “became aggressive” toward a resident outside of their home, the sheriff’s office said.

CBS 17 has confirmed the man suspected of pulling the trigger is a member of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, according to spokesperson Jacqueline Hill. At this time, the soldier’s rank and position within the command are not known.

The man killed as a result of the shooting has been identified as 35-year-old Ramzan Daraev from Chicago, Illinois, who appeared to have been shot multiple times, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies said they located Daraev nearly 250 yards from the roadway, along a powerline on the residential property.

Daraev’s identity was later confirmed through family members and an international identification that was discovered in his vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. At the time of his death, he was reported to have been working as a subcontractor for Utilities One, which is a company based in New Jersey. Investigators are still working to verify his official employment status, deputies said.

According to the news release, Daraev did not have any utility equipment, utility clothing or identification during the time of the shooting. The incident has been reported to the U.S. Department of Labor as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The FBI has also stepped in to help in the investigation, including providing a translator to assist with interviews of other reported Utilities One employees, the sheriff’s office said. Hill confirmed the primary investigating agency remains the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

“Investigators are diligently working to gather all relevant information prior to concluding the investigation, including autopsy reports and findings from the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office,” the news release from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office stated. “Once all facts have been collected and reviewed, the case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for a determination on whether criminal charges will be pursued.”

“The Moore County Sheriff’s Office is committed to conducting a thorough and impartial investigation,” the statement added.
