    Just saw this thread and the multiple references to the Wheel of Time series. For those of you who enjoy the complexity of fantasy series like that I'd suggest Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erickson. It can be a challenging read but it is so rich it's mind boggling... Just a stunningly beautiful and immersive work of fantasy.

    There was a time when I read everything Jamez Clavell wrote, and James Mitchener too.

    Having spent time in Japan on several occasions, I can say his view on Japanese culture is a bit skewed to the European stereotype, but it's a great read.
