I’ve had my current truck for 7-8 years now, it’s on its third windshield and that one has 2 chips in it as we speak. All coming from big rigs kicking up rocks and tossing them at my windshield. At first I didn’t have glass coverage and paid for them, saved $100+ and went with aftermarket over OEM and honestly can’t tell the difference. When the first OEM broke I got estimates from a few places Safelite was by far the most expensive, went with a local glass company. Ended up knowing the installer better then I would have liked, as he ended up coming out to my house twice when I quickly had a rock shatter my new one a couple months later.

Of course now that I got glass coverage haven't had to replace it yet.

Glass is covered under Comprehensive, and sometimes with its own lower deductible.

With big companies I think it largely comes down to the tech who happens to get dispatched to your call so I'd look at the independents and their reviews.

It wouldn't have helped you this time, but I also recommend keeping one of these in your glovebox in case you do notice a chip before it spreads (especially if you have a car with automated braking sensors that have to be recalibrated with windshield replacements): https://www.amazon.com/Permatex-0910...dp/B000ALJ4MY/

I have been surprised by some of the glue repairs. Is the L-shape like 1"x0.5", or 10"x5"? And where is it? I have a tiny crack in my truck that irritates me sometimes, but not enough to offset the hassle and expense of getting it fixed. If it is still small the vacuum pump repairs might make it disappear (if you go soon, so the crack doesn't have any dirt in it) or at least keep it from getting bigger.

Had a Civic windshield replaced after the original was blasted by hail. Then the replacement just cracked in a weird almost perfect circle. I thought it was vandalized but found that such happens. So insurance sent out the dude. However, the sealing molding won't stay in place. Since the car was old and not leaking, ignored it until I bought a new car. That car was destroyed by hail also, became a Subaru - which was destroyed by an inattentive driver who plowed into a line of stopped cars on 1604 in San Antonio - and screwed my shoulder up.

Had something hit my windshield on my 2010 Corolla. $200 got me a new aftermarket windshield installed. This was probably 10 years ago and the windshield was just a windshield. No issues with the aftermarket glass. Ive also had a bunch of aftermarket glass installed on my work trucks over the years. Also no issues

I'm outing myself as a dumbass here: I was replacing wiper blades on my 2020 Ram. I had the driver's side blade off and when I went to put on the new one I pushed the blade arm and it thwacked forward onto the windshield making a star shaped divot slightly above the bottom of the windshield. From the location I knew it was going to spread. My insurance pays for rock chip repair with zero deductible, but that didn't apply in my case.

Safelite installed a non-OEM, calibrated the headlight auto-dim and managed to reapply my annual park permit, car wash and turnpike RFID stickers for $750.00.

Considering that an $0.89 package of Little Debbie Dunking Sticks now costs $2.69, I was happy with the price.

When I was working, my daily commute had me driving directly into the sun on the trip home. Over the years I had them (Safelite) replace two windshields in my beater Escort when the little dings began to annoy me enough on the drive home. IIRC those ran $179.00ish, done in the parking lot at work, I've always been happy with their service.
