Texas clearly still remembers its frontier origins, when property rights were really important.
    God Bless Texas.

Oh for sure, pretty familiar with that situation after 6 years in Orlando, just shy of 3 in Miami. I'd have whinged less about the lack of a basement when I was down there if builders would have put proper sized garages on the dang houses. When we moved north I got excited about being able to have a basement but was told basements here were rare because it didn't take much digging before you got into rock. D'oh!

I have a similar situation but with a dog thats scared of everything.

2010-ish, mid July, I got to take my dog for his last walk before bed. Its around 11:30pm. The development I live in is quiet, white collar upper middle class. Serious crime is nonexistent, no violent crime so theres no reason to suspect anything. I cross the street and head to up toward the intersection in the development which is only a few hundred feet away. As the dog stops to sniff the grass we hear fireworks. The dog freaks out, hes afraid of everything especially loud noises, and he immediately starts pulling back towards the house. Weve only been outside for a min and I know Im not going to be able to get him to go now and Im going to have to wait a good amount of time for him to calm down so I can take him out again. Im kinda pissed at the whole situation. Like who the fuck sets off fireworks at midnight?!?! Like WTF dude?!?! As I head home a car come to the intersection from the side street, an early 2000s Chevy 1500, stops at the stop sign and turns left, away from me.

The next evening when I come home from work that side street is tapped off with the yellow police tape!! Odd!!! I come to find out there was a murder. Guy shot outside his home around midnight. He was shot once in the head and was out by his front door till a neighbor walking his dog in the morning saw it. What I thought was fireworks was in fact gun shots. If my dog wasnt scared of everything I was going to be turning onto that street and the incident occurred only a few houses away from the intersection.

Turned out to be a lovers triangle. One chick dating two guys, one guy got really jealous......

Note the bolded parts where a locked door was crucial, and an unlocked door nearly led to disaster.
Moorpak Court is a big complex. It's also not a place where I would ever leave a door unlocked.

"SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after police say he went on a crime spree that involved the attempted kidnapping of a 4-year-old and burglary.

Around 9 p.m. on Aug. 3, the Sparks Police Department was called to the apartment complex at 4005 Moorpark Court in northwest Sparks on reports of a person with a knife.

Police arrived at 9:06 p.m. and set up a perimeter with the help of the Reno Police Department. The armed person was not found during the initial search and police believed the suspect was in one of the apartment complexes.

During their investigation, police learned that during the time they were en route to the scene, the suspect was armed with a knife and was challenging a person sitting in their car, asking them if they wanted to die.

The driver left the area, and the suspect turned his attention towards a playground where several kids were playing. Police say the suspect started to run towards the playground with the knife in his hand, making statements about kids dying.

The children fled except for a 4-year-old that the suspect picked up and claimed to be his, which was untrue. The child’s grandmother intervened and a struggle over the child ensued before the grandmother got control of the child.

The suspect then chased two young female siblings who were running towards a nearby apartment. They made it safely inside, locked the door and told their parents. The suspect tried to follow the kids inside but was stopped by the locked door, which he stabbed several times.

Another tenant was outside on her enclosed patio when the suspect approached her and grabbed her arm while swinging the knife at her. The tenant ducked and broke away, ultimately retreating into her apartment.

The suspect then walked between two cars, hitting both with the knife as he did so.

He then continued through the complex, where he found an unlocked door, which he opened. Inside the apartment was a father and his juvenile son. The father pushed the suspect out of the apartment and locked the door. The suspect, meanwhile, was last seen going north through the complex as officers responded.

Finally, on Aug. 6, the case culminated with the arrest of a 16-year-old boy whose name is being withheld due to his age.

He was arrested and charged with:

Assault with a Deadly Weapon x3
    Destruction of Property x2
    Kidnapping with a Deadly Weapon
Residential Burglary while Possessing a Deadly Weapon"

The local paper and Nextdoor has constant reports of car theft with unlocked cars. I just don't get it. Perhaps one might forget to lock the door when distracted but there are more thefts than just a mind fart would suggest.

Also, Nextdoor is full of folks saying they saw a suspicious person or persons. Did they call the law - NO. Why? Duh? We should be on the look out - yeah.

On a side issue - how to do convince loved ones that if they see something bad or something bad happens - Don't call me first! Call 911. I have that problem and read about folks who have a problem and then call PawPaw to get his shotgun and geezer ass in the truck to ride to the rescue.

Esp. with medical emergencies - call 911 first!

My car is 9 years old. I rent cars frequently for work.
I can't recall the last time I didn't have the option to lock the car door by simply touching the right spot on the handle.
There's no excuse for not locking the door. Especially at night in the driveway.
Thieves suck but I have no sympathy for people who get their shit stolen because they didn't bother to lock the car door.
It's our #1 crime here in suburbia.

I am in the habit of locking the car when it sits in the garage, and do not leave a garage door opener in the truck that doesn't fit in the garage.
