Sparks standoff suspect found dead after injuring two officers and a deputy

    https://mynews4.com/news/local/multi...eat-to-public#

"Two officers and one deputy have been released from the hospital and a suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting turned into an hours-long standoff in Sparks Friday afternoon.

Sparks police chief Chris Crawforth had a press conference Saturday morning and provided the following details.

Just before 1:40 p.m. on March 29, a Sparks police officer initiated a traffic stop in the 1700 block of Greenbrae Drive. As the officer approached the driver side of the vehicle, the suspect pulled out a handgun and immediately started firing rounds through the window striking a Sparks officer in the shoulder. Chief Crawforth said the suspect fled the scene before crashing into another car at the intersection of Greenbrae Drive and Rock Blvd.

The driver then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Dispatch received information about a person jumping fences in the 1400 block of Greenbrae Drive and Prospect Ave. Officers from Sparks Police, Reno Police and Washoe County Sheriff's Office began investigating the area on foot.

The subject attempted to enter an occupied house but was forced out by the residents inside the home. Officers investigated another residence the suspect was reported to be seen in. When the officers reached the residence, an elderly woman answered and dropped to the floor as the subject started firing from inside the house. A Washoe County deputy was struck and he along with the elderly woman were pulled from the scene.

A second Sparks police officer was struck in the gunfire but was able to remove himself from the scene.

Crawforth said the suspect then left that residence, jumped a fence and entered a different home occupied by another elderly woman. Th female hid from the subject in her home. While the suspect was in the backyard, officers were able to get the elderly resident safely out of her home.

SWAT and a negotiator team showed up and negotiations took place for several hours. On several occasions the subject open fired on the officers outside.

At 10 p.m. on Friday night, entry was made into the residence and the suspect was found dead at the scene.

The two Sparks officers and the one Washoe County deputy were treated for their injuries and since released."

Man chases car burglar, fires gunshot at getaway vehicle shattering passenger-side window, SAPD says
Incident occurred around 3 a.m. at Palo Alto Apartment Homes

SAN ANTONIO – A man who saw someone breaking into his sister’s vehicle chased after him and fired a single gunshot in the parking lot of a South Side apartment complex early Monday morning, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. at the Palo Alto Apartment Homes in the 10100 block of State Highway 16 South, not far from Loop 410 and Palo Alto College.

According to police, officers were called to the apartment complex after receiving word of a shooting. Officers say a man told them that someone was trying to steal his sister’s vehicle. The man heard glass shattering and he left his apartment to find someone attempting to break into the driver-side window of the vehicle.

Police said the man chased after the suspect, who then got into a car that was waiting for him. The man fired a gunshot at the vehicle, breaking the passenger-side window.

The suspect and his female driver fled the area and have not been found. SAPD said they searched the area for clues and processed the scene, but so far, no arrests have been made.

A preliminary police report states that there were no calls for gunshot victims immediately following the incident.
The investigation into the shooting and break-in is ongoing, police said.

    He Had a What?

"Cambridge Police are reporting some details on the incident with the police officer and self-discharging gun at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School yesterday."

Nobody injured, just your usual gunshot in the crapper, but the lead line is worth noting.
    Pretty good headline, too:

"Police in Cambridge say officer had just taken off his gun so he could go and it went off"

Specifically U visa fraud which is RAMPANT. The fraud has ranged from people submitting completely counterfeit, law-enforcement certifications, to people staging crimes and making false police reports, to police officers arrested for taking bribes to provide false certifications.

However, HPD has now said the couple and Scott were working together to stage a robbery so that the man and woman could file a report with the police and use their crime victim status to apply for a U nonimmigrant status, or "U visa."

"The person qualifies for a work permit while they're waiting for a resolution of the case," immigration attorney Silvia Mintz said.

Police said they obtained text messages from Scott's phone between him and a man named William Winfrey the night of the shooting.

In one message, Winfrey writes to Scott, "It's the usual gas station (expletive)."

In another he writes, "When you done run make all the (expletive) to look real."

Investigators said they also found a selfie from one of the purported victims on Scott's phone.

Police said Winfrey and Scott staged numerous other similar robberies dating back to 2023 in a bid to help the alleged victims obtain visas.

One took place at a northeast Houston gas station on Jan. 26 in which Scott pretended to rob a cashier at the store.

The U nonimmigrant status (U visa) is set aside for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to law enforcement or government officials in the investigation or prosecution of criminal activity. Congress created the U nonimmigrant visa with the passage of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act (including the Battered Immigrant Women’s Protection Act) in October 2000. The legislation was intended to strengthen the ability of law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking of noncitizens and other crimes, while also protecting victims of crimes who have suffered substantial mental or physical abuse due to the crime and are willing to help law enforcement authorities in the investigation or prosecution of the criminal activity. The legislation also helps law enforcement agencies to better serve victims of crimes.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) — Officials say nine individuals, including seven law enforcement officers, have been indicted in federal court in South Carolina on visa fraud and drug charges.

According to authorities, one of the alleged schemes in the indictment, involved fraudulent U Non-Immigrant Visas (“U-Visas”), which are set aside for victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse as a result of the crime.
