I never did business with Dumpster/LAV because I just thought he was an ass. There's plenty of capable fish in the sea, I don't have to swim with a remora. Now, discovering he's also a felonious piece of shit is strangely validating.

Edit: I'll make a slight correction. I did buy his 1911 two-volume set, because I'm a slut like that.

    1. THX to DMF 13 for his insight and service.
Thanks, and thank you for your service too. I know you've been prosecuting cases for a long time, and educating a jury about the evidence, and what it means, is a very difficult job, for both the prosecutors, and the defense attorneys. The best education I got in how difficult an AUSA's job really is, was my first time being an advisory witness for a trial, and seeing how truly complicated it is for the attorneys putting a case together for trial, both in prep and during trial. When an agent complains about what an AUSA asks them to do, it's a good bet they haven't had one of their cases go to trial, and therefore don't understand why what's being asked for could be very important down the road. I tell every new agent assigned to me for OJT that they won't really understand the job until they've been through a trial as the case agent.

    2. In many larger districts the w/l record of an AUSA is perceived to matter because many of those AUSAs are ultimately trying to run for something and/or go to private practice and make big money.
I hope I didn't give the impression that I think most AUSAs want extreme confidence in a conviction to guard their "record," based on further ambitions. While I know that's true for some, most have explained, and since most of them didn't/don't have further political/private sector ambitions I believe they were sincere, that they don't want to waste limited resources on "iffy" counts. I'm sure there are examples where it was in the interest of justice, for an AUSA to charge something they had less than extreme confidence in conviction at trial, and they have done so, but it's just not something that has been necessary in the cases I've worked. Even among the AUSAs I've known that had ambitions beyond being an AUSA, their primary motives have always seemed to be furthering the interests of justice, and efficiently using limited resources.

I was only trying to point out that the high conviction rate isn't due to bullying defendants, and their attorneys, with weak charges.

    9. In all but the rarest of cases, there is a finite amount of time/talent/trasure that can be brought to bear on a given matter.
100%, and especially so for you all in the US Attorney's Office. When you guys have everyone from the Railroad Retirement Board, Office of the Inspector General, to Homeland Security, and dozens of other agencies in between, bringing you cases, you all can get overloaded pretty quick, even if they all do a good job of filtering out their cases before you ever see them.

Not at all. We are platinum level cool.

Overlapping perspectives made up by our individual and regional experiences.

To extent your point: you learn far more about being a better AUSA after having suffered a trial set back, lost counts, hung counts and or an acquittal/dismissal than a straight up win.

To be fair, it was vetted in public bathhouses across San Francisco.

    You got off easy!

    I have both AR's, 1911 Vol 1, WWII Germany Vol 1.

Say what you want about the felonious guy, he does put out a good coffee table book.

Here's hoping that they keep publishing under the 'Prison Industries' label.

At least it'll give Dumpster money for the commissary.

Dumpster will fit in nicely with the white supremacists types. Some will know him, and he's smart enough to manipulate this bunch if his ambition doesn't alienate its leaders. I wonder if he has an alcohol or tobacco addiction? If so, he needs ample commissary funds to buy trading items.

On another forum a guy preferred the Mini-14 and disagreed with LAV who then asked, "Do you know who I am"?
