OAKLAND (CBS SF) — A proposal to ban hammers, wrenches, shields, sling shots, paint projectiles and other potentially destructive items at protests will be considered by the Oakland City Council at its meeting on Tuesday night.

The ordinance prohibiting so-called “tools of violence and vandalism” during a demonstration is being proposed by Councilman Noel Gallo, who said in a letter to his colleagues that it’s designed to counter violence that occurred during recent protests against the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in Florida.

To be clear, the proposed ordinance only bans such items at a protest. It's not a blanket ban on wrenches, pipes, etc.

That said... I can see numerous avenues where an otherwise law-abiding person would get tripped up here. What if you're driving home from work and run into a protest you didn't even know was happening? What if you're on your way home from a baseball game (with a bat, ball and glove) and do the same? Hell, if I were suddenly in the midst of a protest (read: "riot" in Oakland), I'd want a lot more than just a tire iron.

I agree fully, but what if you're at a protest and you need to spike a sign into the ground? Can you use a rock? Shouldn't that be considered a 'destructive item'? It certainly seems like it should.

I posted this b/c it's stupid-we already have laws about violence, so the fact that you 'ban' an object during a certain public event is stupid. If you use the hammer to spike a sign in the ground, then you're good, if you use the hammer or your fist for to spike a person into the ground, ie violence......duh then it's illegal already.

And just up the freeway you have the birthplace of the Manhattan project which also happens to be declared a "nuclear free zone."

The idiots that seem to infest this beautiful area of the world are without limit to the nonsense which they come up with to make themselves feel good by satisfying their need to "do something" without actually doing anything.

Obviously, not a follower of the inimitable Zombie Time; for example: Crashing the Crashers: Tea Party Infiltrators Outmaneuvered in S.F.

And Tea Party Patriots' California directory lists San Francisco Tea Party, among others.
