    Hip-shooting full auto long guns goes 'way back. The Browning Automatic Rifle as originally issued had no bipod: the original doctrine for use of the BAR in WWI called for "walking fire", bursts as the BAR-man advanced across No Mans Land. IIRC, the BAR gunner's ammo belt had a socket that he was supposed to place the butt into.
